Summary of 2014 SCRO Groundwater Data ProjectsMichael McGinnisSouth Central Region Office
SCRO GW Data Deficiencies (Start of 2014)
• ROs have different methods of collecting gw data, indexing new WCRs, and tracking gw data requests.
• Historical WCRs.
• Recent WCRs (2011-Current) + May Surprise Addition.
• No construction info for current SCRO well runs.
• No review of current SCRO well runs for reliability or aquifer match which caused outlier points when contouring.

RO WCR Data Requests New SWN Requests New WCRs Historical WCRs Biannual GW Level Measurements
NRO •1 WRT handles requests•Response time: 2 Wks or less•Doesn't always go on well measurement runs•No request status tracking
•1 WRT assigns new SWNs•Typically 3 wks response•Added to GWIDS if RO measures
•1,500-2,000 new WCRs/yr•1 FT+ 1 SA assign TRS and scan•All new WCR entered in db (MDLog)•Added to GWIDS if RO measures
•All scanned (excl 2014)•All historical info entered (MDLog)
•3-4 WRTs sent•Owner permission (signed form letter)•Have construction info for all wells
NCRO •1 WRT handles requests•Response time: 2 -3 Wks or less•Doesn't always go on well measurement runs•Request status tracking wrkbk
•1 WRT assigns new SWNs•Typically 3 wks response•Added to GWIDS if RO measures
•8-10,000 new WCRs/yr•1 person + 1 SA assign TRS and scan•All new WCR info entered into db (Wellma)
•All scanned (excl. 2014)•2003-Current info entered (WellMa)
•4 WRTs sent + 2-3 EGs on another run?•Have construction info for all wells?

Groundwater Data Collection Methods by Region Office
South Central Region Office 3
Historical WCRs (Early 2014)
• ~170,000 paper copies.
• ~36,000 entered into WellMa in 2008-2009 after temporary funding.
• ~134,000 still unentered.
South Central Region Office 4
Current WCRs (Early 2014)• Start of 2013, WCRs had only been scanned through
2011.
• Two SAs located, scanned and entered TRS, WCR#, County, and type through 2013.
• Two new SAs hired 05/14. Started on 2014 WCRs
• THEN the May Surprise ...

SLO WCR Project
• SLO WCR pages originally misestimated at 18-20,000.
• Decided to scan in-house instead of sending to contractor.
• Combination of WRTs, SAs, and F&W Sci. Aides started scanning and adding index info in June. Some unexpected problems on some WCRs: Duplicates, No WCR#, No TRS.
• Finished scanning/indexing in November.
• Starting on remaining 2014 WCRs.South Central Region Office 7

Scanning WCRs In-house
• Pros
1) Can add new WCR#s and missing TRS info.
2) Can delete duplicates and unwanted pages like county well permits.
3) Weekly progress status.
4) QA/QC done by experienced groundwater personnel. Can rescan misfeeds or edited WCRs.
5) Can use extra personnel (ex. Sci. Aides) when not on other assignments.
6) Training personnel on WCRs.
• Cons
1) Base scanning/indexing is less expensive from contractor ($0.58/pg.). But unknown costs for pre- and post-scanning organizing.
2) Could have been completed quicker.
3) DWR personnel could have worked on other projects.

Questionable Wells Types:
• Wells perforated below Corcoran clay
• Wells along eastern edge of SJV (decomposed granite)
• Multi-completion monitoring wells
• Unusual hydrographs
• No WCR or 429
