2017 Holiday Gratuity Fund

Every year at Christmas time, residents show their appreciation to all of the staff of our condomini-ums by voluntary contributions to our staff Holiday

Gratuity Fund. The Fund is distributed by JOC to our Management staff, our Super-intendents, our Cleaners, and Security personnel. This year, 214 units contributed a total of $13,350.00. The money was

apportioned between 15 staff and handed out during the week of Dec. 18th. The committee managing the fund was made up of board members. On behalf of all the staff we thank all of the residents who contrib-uted to the Fund.

Seasonal DecoratingA big thank you to all of the groups of volunteers who decorated each building, the fireside lounge and the rec-centre for Xmas. Your work was appreciated and enjoyed by all. A thank you to the Supers for their help in getting the boxes of decorations out of storage and putting them away afterwards. The Supers also did the lights outside. How does our indoor saltwater pool function?

Last year, we began a series of articles on behind-the-scene systems that make our condos work. In this issue, we examine how our indoor ‘saltwater’ pool works. Is it like swimming in the ocean? Not even anywhere close. A saltwater pool contains 10 times less salt than the ocean. In fact, a saltwater

pool is less salty than human tears. You don‘t get that “salty” feeling on your skin and hair after drying off. A salt-

water pool does not sting your eyes in the same way ocean water does, and you can barely taste the salt in the water. Basically, a saltwater pool is a chlorine pool; it simply uses an alternate means of chlorination. Rather than adding chlorine directly into the water as in a traditional pool, chlorine is generated by an electrical cell from salt (NaCl) added directly into the pool water. This is done by a “salt chlorine generator” (see diagram), installed in the circula-tion system. As salt water passes through the gen-erator cell, an electrical current splits the salt in the water into the chlorine compounds, hypochlorous acid (HClO) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), commonly known as bleach. These provide the disinfecting function

normally achieved by adding chlo-rine directly into the water. Chlorine lev-els are main-tained by periodically adding table salt directly to the pool to

provide a continuous and steady supply of chlorine in the pool.

Some benefits of a saltwater pool over a traditional chlorine pool are: • Significantlylowerchlorinelevelsinasalt-water pool give the water a softer feel, and are gentler on skin, hair, eyes, and even clothing.• Lackofsideeffectssuchasirritatedeyes, lung irritation and asthma-like symptoms (https://coachsci.sdsu.edu/swim/chlorine/asthma.htm).• Noneedtophysicallyhandletoxicliquidchlorine or tablets. • Lesslossofchlorinetotheenvironment.• Lowerchlorinesmellintheairthanatradi-tional pool (“if you can smell the chlorine in the pool environment, it is dangerously high”)• Easiertomaintainthanatraditionalpool.

Whilesaltwaterpoolsrequirereducedmain-tenance steps, the water must still be routinely tested and adjusted to maintain proper sanitation (our pool is checked three times a week by ex-perts). The salt chlorine generator cell must also be inspected at regular intervals for calcium buildup and debris.

Lighting retrofit underwayAs part of our energy efficien-cy program, Platinum Power Group has been contracted to retrofit all of the standard

lighting in the common areas in our buildings with LED (light emitting diode) bulbs. LED bulbs have a lifespan which is up to 25 times longer than incan-descent lamps, and are significantly more efficient than most fluorescent lamps. LED lighting uses up to 75% less energy than standard incandescent lighting.

During the change-over, expect intermittent light-ing interruptions in common areas during this project. Please watch out for tradesmen working when walking in common areas or driving in and out of the garage.

Health benefits of a Bistro!!Supporters of a bistro for our condo will cheer as they learn the benefit that comes from drinking their favorite beverage, coffee. A new study published in the journal of Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention found drinking coffee may lower the risk of colorectal cancer. Data was gathered from 5,100 adults who had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 4,000 healthy adults on their consumption of boiled, filtered, instant and decaffeinated coffee, along with their family history of cancer and other lifestyle factors. Even the modest consumption of one to two cups of coffee per day was linked to a 26 percent decrease in colorectal cancer risk. When the participants drank more than 2.5 cups per day, the cancer risk was reduced by up to 50 percent. The discovery that decaffeinated coffee proved as beneficial as the caffeinated variety shows the beverage’s protective properties aren’t due to caffeine alone.

So grab your coffee and bond with your fellow bistroites!!

Let’s do it!

Wouldn’t it be great to have a bistro in the building where we can meet for a mid-morning coffee break and wake up? We should be able to make this happen in our recreation centre without too much difficulty. The party room seems like theideallocation.Itisfrequentlydarkandemptyin the daytime - what a waste of potential! But if we turn on the lights, and put coffee facilities out on the bar, it would become something more like a bistro or social club. There could be a set time for coffee break on weekday mornings.

What’srequiredisasmallgroupofinterest-ed volunteers to get things organized, make a few preliminary decisions and take turns with day-to-day operations. If you are willing to pitch in to get this initiative started, please contact Marian (phone: 416-578-1893, email: [email protected]).

The Director’s BBQ

This past summer both Boards decided to combine their annual barbecues into one joint event to see if it would allow for more mingling among the residents of the separate buildings. Af-terwards, the 99 attendees were surveyed for their opinions and whether we should continue with a single event for both buildings. The majority (62%) reported having a good time, but less than half (44%) felt that we should continue with a joint event. Over half of the at-tendees felt that the dancing area and access to washroomswereinadequate.Someofthecom-ments included: “It was too crowded - could not mingle, too hard to move around; sitting around the pool is more pleasant than under a tent; too noisy; bugs biting; DJ better than live music; thanks for the hard work but…” Looking at it from every angle, the Boards have decided to return to the original practice of hosting separate BBQ’s for each building.

Indoor plants that naturally help to clean the air inside your homeDid you know that air inside your unit can contain harmful pollutants that negatively affect the body and cause many ailments; and that indoor plants have the ability to remove harmful pollutants and clean the air in your home naturally. Even NASA has concluded that the plants you choose for your home make a difference. Below are some of the best plants that will go to work making your indoor environment clean-er:

DendrobiumThe Dendrobium Orchid is a tropical orchid that is easy to grow at home. It removes a harmful chemical called xylene from the air in your home. Xylene is present in glues used in furniture and paint on the walls.

Peace LilyPeace Lilies remove harmful toxins like acetone, ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, methyl alcohol, trichloroethylene and xylene from the surrounding air in your home. They are great indoor plants that thrive in low

light conditions, and are low maintenance plants that can stand cold.

AnthuriumsAnthuriums are very exotic looking plants and great as indoor plants that grow well in low light conditions. They re-move ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene and xylene from the surrounding air in your home.

Chinese EvergreensOne way to get rid of benzene and formaldehyde in your home is to purchase a Chinese Ever-green plant. They are thought to bring good luck and were used as decoration in Asian countries

long before they made it west. The longer you keep your Chinese Evergreen in your home, the better it will do at removing indoor toxins.

Snake PlantSnake Plant is one of the more beautiful indoor plants, and its leaves do resemble snakes, and

twist and curl as they grow upwards. This is a plant you’ll want to have in your home because it offers some of the broadest protection from indoor contaminants, and it pairs well with a Peace Lily.

Other valuable plants include: - The Pothos plant commonly known as the Money Plant, removes carbon monoxide and formaldehyde from the surrounding air. Growing this plant at home is supposed to bring good luck, happiness, and prosperity, and to attract positive energy. - Ferns are plants that remove pollutants like toluene and xylene that are found in many paints and glues. Ferns grow well indoors and look great as decorative plants. - Red Edged Dracaena is a fast growing shrub which removes pollutants like xylene, tri-chloroethylene and formaldehyde that can enter yourhomethroughlacquers,varnishesandgaso-line.
