But that feeling soon turned to excitement when she ended up buying the business. With a history of making costumes for children and friends, Heather said it was a perfect move for her to make. That was 11.5 years ago and the successful business woman now has a string of accolades to her name. This year, she won the NT Telstra Micro Business award, The Commonwealth Bank NT Business Owner of the Year and the NT Business Woman of the Year awards. Heather said her company is successful because it has the wow factor. ‘‘You constantly hear people saying ‘wow’ in our store be- cause they can’t believe how much stuff we’ve got. We also have a smile on our faces and are very proud of our products and good service. ‘‘If you have a good product, good service and the care factor then you will be successful,’’ she said. Heather’s advice to women starting out in business is to keep an eye on finances. ‘‘Don’t go in too quickly, you must tippy-toe through the beginnings of business. You have to ensure you work with a tight budget. ‘‘If you have a positive outlook and a natural problem solv- ing attitude you will go forward. The only way is up. If you strive to succeed and do your homework you can win the race,’’ she said. When Heather Malone called Penny’s Fancy Dress to hire ared pair of boots, she was disappointed to hear a recordingsaying the store was closed down and for sale.

But that feeling soon turned to excitement when she endedup buying the business.

With a history of making costumes for children and friends,Heather said it was a perfect move for her to make.

That was 11.5 years ago and the successful business womannow has a string of accolades to her name.

This year, she won the NT Telstra Micro Business award,The Commonwealth Bank NT Business Owner of the Yearand the NT Business Woman of the Year awards.

Heather said her company is successful because it has thewow factor.

‘‘You constantly hear people saying ‘wow’ in our store be-cause they can’t believe how much stuff we’ve got. We alsohave a smile on our faces and are very proud of our productsand good service.

‘‘If you have a good product, good service and the care factorthen you will be successful,’’ she said.

Heather’s advice to women starting out in business is tokeep an eye on finances.
