Success Stories regarding the Observance of the ‘Nirmal Vidyalaya Saptaha (8th -13th August,2016)
in Purba Medinipur District
As per the Order of the State Project Director, PBSSM and the Deputy Secretary to the Govt.
of West Bengal, the Weeklong Programme (8th – 13th August, 2016) of Nirmal Vidyalaya Saptaha
2016 (School Hygiene Week 2016) was observed throughout the district. As per the guideline of
the programme, day to day activities were followed properly.
Day to Day activities are given below:

13.08.2016 Art and Aesthetics Appreciation day
The necessary fund of Rs. 30,41,000/- (Rupees thirty lac forty one thousand ) only was
received from the flag ship programme i.e. SBM-IEC. During the weeklong observation, all CLRCs
organized rally, Padayatra, door to door campaign, house to house survey at school level on
different dates. In those days they jointly chanted many rhymes like
‘Dal Bendhe Schoole Jai, Sab Bai Para Chai’;

On 08th August 2016: Launching of the Campaign: The observance of Nirmal
Vidyalaya Saptaha (8th -13th August,2016) was started at all Primary School, Upper Primary, SSK,
MSK and all Madrasah Shiksha Kendra under 45 no. of CLRCs.
The following activities taken up at school level:
• Mass Singing of Sanitation Song (Swasthyabidhan Gaan) during the Morning Assembly • Discussion on the importance and day specific events of Nirmal Vidyalaya Saptaha • Reconstitution of Child Cabinet in presence of MTA/parents • Special classroom transaction on WASH. Theme: Safe drinking water and its importance • Demonstration of Five Steps of Hand washing and organize Mass Hand Washing before
Mid-Day Meal • Rally/Street Drama in the neighborhood community after the Mid-Day Meal
Theme: Importance of Hand Washing at critical times for better health

On 09th August 2016: Activity Based Learning Day:
On the day of Activity based learning Day, the students made mass singing of sanitation songs
during the morning assembly, sanitary survey of drinking water source, demonstration of five steps
of hand washing and organized mass hand washing before Mid-Day-Meal, waste disposable
practice etc.
The following activities taken up at school level:
• Mass Singing of Sanitation Song (Swasthyabidhan Gaan) during the Morning Assembly
• Demonstration of Five Steps of Hand washing and organize Mass Hand Washing before

Sanitary Survey of the drinking water source
Organizing transactions between the school and community to assess the following
indicators.
Waste disposal practice and its recurrent threats
Sanitary condition of drinking water sources of the neighborhood community.
Personnel from the local sanitary mart or the water testing laboratory can be invited as
resource persons to spread awareness about the issue as well as help with the assessment.

On 10th & 11th August 2016: Social Responsibility Days: On the day of Social Responsibility Day, the students made rally (Padayatra), household survey, demonstration of five steps of hand washing and organized mass hand washing before Mid-Day-Meal. They also planted many trees at the school premises and identified open defecation sites. They motivated families and communities to send each and every child to school on regular basis NVA appreciates the special role of the school in the community and the responsibilities it
has towards society. Special weightage (marks) is being given for promotion of innovations in this
area while evaluating schools for awards. The following is the suggested list of activities to be
carried out by the school:

•Discussion on the importance of social responsibility of a school and the role of children
•Special classroom transaction on WASH. Theme: Importance of adequate sanitation in
Improving the quality of life
Theme: Importance of drinking safe water for improving the quality of life.
•Demonstration of Five Steps of Hand washing and organizing Mass Hand Washing before Mid-Day
Meal
• Household Survey to assess the following: A. Out of school child and the reasons behind it. B. Toilet less family and the reasons of not having. C. Open defecator and the reasons. D. Open defecation sites. E. Source of drinking water F. Times when people wash their hands and with what
•Plantation of trees in open defecation sites/waste lands/road sides supported by the Gram Panchayats
•Preparation of Social Map with the above indicators •Motivating families and community to send each and every child to school on regular basis. •They should also pledge to make their village toilet/open defecation free as well as to adopt
good hand washing practices before and after certain events.
On 12th August 2016: Activity Based Learning Day : On the day of Leadership Development
Day, the students made mass singing of sanitation songs during the morning assembly, open
session led by the Child Cabinet to finalize the issues, demonstration of five steps of hand washing
and organized mass hand washing before Mid-Day-Meal, waste disposable practice etc

Open Session led by the child cabinet to finalise the issues/program for advocacy with the
Gram Panchayat.
Demonstration of Five Steps of Hand washing and organizing Mass Hand Washing before
Mid-Day Meal.
Interface with Gram Panchayat: The Pradhan will convene a meeting of child cabinets to
take stock of the situation for filling gaps. Two Ministers escorted by the Head Teacher will
participate in the meeting. The points of discussions may include:
Waste disposal practice and its possible solution in school and community
Safety: Home to school safe passage, safety measures in high risk zone including risk
reduction, WASH improvement in school, Water testing of school source and mitigation of
contamination if any
Improving the sanitary condition of school and community sources, Developing and
promoting social norm for stopping open defecation and Submitting demands of household
toilet generated during the drive and plan for its supply.
Sanitary condition of drinking water sources of the neighborhood community ( The Gram
Panchayats may also support testing of drinking water quality at various sources)

On 13th August 2016: Activity Based Learning Day : On the day of Art and Aesthetics
Appreciation Day, the ‘Sit & Draw’ competition was held at all school level from 11-30 a.m to 1-30
p.m. on the following themes.
On the 13th August, 2016 Sit & Draw competition four groups, given below:
Group –A (Class-I &II) : SADAI THAKI PARICHHANNA Group –B (Class-III &IV) : AMAR KALPANAY AK NIRMAL VIDYALAYA
Group –C (Class-V, VI &VII) : SABAI MILE VIDYALAY KE RAKHI PARICHANNA. Group –D (Class-VIII , IX & X) : PARIBESH-I-JIBAN, SANGRAKHAN-I-BHABISHYAT

FIRST PRIZE: $ 7000/- at State level;
$ 3000/- at District level
SECOND PRIZE: $ 5000/- at State level;
$ 2000/- at District level
THIRD PRIZE: $ 3000/- at State level;
$ 1000/- at District level

The district level verification of ‘Sit & Draw Competition’ has been completed on 15.09.2016.
Total 12 nos. of best paintings of ‘Sit & Draw competition’ out of 158 ( 31 Group-A, 40 Group-B, 43
Group-C, 44 Group-D) nos. of paintings may be find out at District level by the District Award
Committee. The District Award Committee consists of :

As per the said order the District Level Award Committee verification of Sit & Draw Competition
was held on 26.09.16 at 12-00 noon in the office chamber of the District Project Officer, Sarva
Shiksha Mission, and Purba Medinipur. During verification following members were present

Three paintings (1st, 2nd and 3rd) from each of four groups (A, B, C & D) i.e. total 12 paintings

the Eligibility and Evaluation Criteria for receiving this award.

2016 from the State Award Ceremony.

Schools across the State will be selected to receive this award. Each education district will
recommend one Primary School and out of that THREE, best Primary School across the State will
be select to receive this award.
One Upper Primary Schools received Jamini Roy Puraskar-2014 from the State Aware Ceremony.

monitoring team and District Project Office, SSM, Purba Medinipur. The programme was completed
successfully in the district.
