Success Stories from the FieldPresentation Template

Program Overview• Wyandanch SD/LaFrancis Hardiman Elementary School

– 561 students targeted in K-2

• Describe target population– 69% African American, 30% Latino,– 82% eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch

• Issue being Addressed: Due to budgetary and logistical constraints, elementary school was not meeting minimum PE minutes required. PE is an important part of maintaining healthy lifestyles for youth, and should not be neglected.

• In order to be in compliance with NYSED, students in grades K-3 are required to have 120 minutes/week of daily PE.

• Objectives: To revise and approve policy (PE Plan) that reflects increased PE minutes. To create a more favorable attitude towards PE/PA during the school day among staff and students.

Quotes from the field

“My students are always excited whenever I announce it is time for Activity Works. I feel the program not only helps them develop their physical fitness levels, they are able

to focus better during the class lessons.”

Suzanne Malloy, Teacher (Grade K)

“Thanks to Ms. Jenkins (principal), the result of her staff meeting seems to have been a big success. I’ve been contacted by teachers requesting DVD’s, and I have

been able to accommodate them. The teachers that I’ve dealt with seem to have bought into it.”

Michael Stamile, PE Director

Program Activity Description• Proposed Changes: To expand the amount of daily PE

minutes in the elementary school by offering this school the Activity Works Program, and reinforcing this change through PE Policy changes.

• Method: Systemic approach to address policy changes and informing and involving all key decision makers through meetings, communications, and consistent follow ups.

• Worked with: PE Director, Building Administrators, Kohl’s Grant staff from North Shore LIJ Health System and HSNY Liaison (Food Service Coordinator).

• Progress to date: K-2 students have increased PE minutes from 90 minutes 3 days/week to 120 minutes 5 days/week.

• Workplan Objectives: PE policy that aligns with NYSED Department regulations for PE is implemented.

Time Line of Events• Fall 2010: HSNY introduced to Wyandanch SD

• December 2010 – May 2011: Planning Meetings and Professional Development

• June 2011: Revised PE Plan submitted to and approved by BOE (reflected increased PE)

• Summer 2011: Technology involved

• September 2011: AW demonstration for staff

• September – December 2011: Classroom visits and AW troubleshooting

• January 2012: Planning Meeting to address status

• February 2012: Meeting in adjacent building to plan AW implementation in Fall 2012 for grade 3 classes

Key Changes & Results• Problem Addressed: Newly adopted PE Plan

describing the implementation of AW provided a feasible solution to meeting the required PE minutes without putting a financial or logistical burden on the school. Short-term Outcomes: Increased understanding of AW; development of skills to implement AW in the classroom; increased knowledge of the benefits of PE/PA for students; development of positive attitudes towards PE/PA among staff and students.

• Intermediate Outcomes: Implementation of AW by K-2 classroom teachers resulting in increased PE time; a shift in social norms in the school environment that support favorable attitudes towards PE/PA; a strengthened PE Plan.

Key Changes & Results (con’t)• Impact: Staff and students seem positively impacted by

AW. Students are given time in the classroom they didn’t otherwise have to exercise, and both staff and students get a break from being stationary. PE/PA time is increased and is reflected in the PE Plan.

• Anecdotes: With the leadership of the building principal, follow-up reminders and classroom visits, AW is gradually being embraced by staff and integrated into the daily classroom routines. Teachers have reported positive feedback.

• Unanticipated Benefits/Opportunities: The growing success of this initiative has provided multiple opportunities for earned media, has elevated the credibility of HSNY and captured the attention of more higher level administrators.

Keys to Success

• Shared Vision

• Buy-In

• Collaboration

• Communication

• Persistence

• Technical Support

Keys to Success (con’t)Lessons Learned

• All levels of the district played a role and contributed: the BOE, district/building administrators, teachers, and students.

• Building a strong school wellness infrastructure is essential as it increases the likelihood that resources and opportunities can be fully integrated and sustained in the school system.

• These elements insure policy and program sustainability in the face of administrative, staff, and building changes.

Replication• This program can and will be replicated in the adjacent building,

Martin Luther King Elementary School in fall 2012 when AW will be implemented in all 3rd grade classes. Planning meetings have already begun.

• Replication may be difficult with in other districts, as the use of AW to fulfill PE minutes is up for debate. However, we have a good relationship to this program and it is available to other districts to use to currently fulfill PA requirements.

Future PlansNext Steps

• Planning Committee will continue to work on data collection.

• Generate Positive Press.• Planning Meetings, Orientations, Professional

Development, and Classroom Visits to take place to fully implement AW in grade 3.

• Expanded Outreach to Staff and Families.• Address other wellness policy and program

initiatives that support broader HSNYS goals.

Future Plans (con’t)

• Opportunities for Improvement: to strengthen and empower the planning committee; facilitate more communication between the planning committee and school building; strengthen district’s and committee’s resolve to work on more policy issues.

• Call to Action: to use this success story as a template; to build a strong infrastructure, not be deterred by administrative, BOE, or building changes; and be patient.
