First we have to read sentences 1 and 2.



Since all of the answer choices combine these two sentences, we have to figure out which way of combining them is most correct, simple, and economical.


Let’s read choice A.It starts with the word since. Since indicates a cause and effect relationship. Is my grandfather patient BECAUSE I admire him? No, so we can’t choose A.


Let’s read choice B.It is straightforward. It gets the because in the right place (I admire him BECAUSE he is patient, and not the other way around.) Overall, not bad, but let’s read C and D, too, just to make sure.


Let’s read choice C.The first problem with C is the word which.Not only do we not need a word there at all, a better choice would be “whom” since we’re referring to a person. The second problem with C is the word “for”. “For” is one way to say “because” or “since”, but it is a weak way that could be misinterpreted.The third problem with C is “and I know works hard.” It would need to start with a comma and say, “I know he works hard.”


Let’s read choice D.Whoa!! That is a run-on sentence times 3!!!!There are three complete sentences here all squeezed into one: “I admire my grandfather” “He is patient”“He works hard”The only separation between the sentences is the word “and”. “And” is NOT ENOUGH to separate two sentences correctly.That leaves us with the perfectly adequate answer B.

First we have to read sentences 6-8.These sentences are not incorrect, but they are choppy and could sound better if they were combined.


Let’s read A.I like it. It combines all three sentences with no errors. It organizes the thought with “although”.


Let’s read B.Oops! I see an error. This is a run-on! There has to be a comma before the second “and” to be correct.Remember, AND by itself is not enough to correctly separate two complete sentences. There also has to be a comma.


Let’s read C.Choice C combines the sentences with the help of the word “while”. However, we aren’t trying to emphasize that at the time he persevered he had little money and lacked farm equipment. We want to emphasize that he persevered despite having little money or farm equipment.


Let’s read D.Oops! Another run-on!!!!!AND is not enough to separate two complete sentences!!! You also have to have a comma!!!

Let’s read B.This sentence is in the wrong order. “To get the fire started” needs to be after “more” in order to make sense.


Let’s read C.I don’t see anything wrong with this one.


Let’s read D.We can’t pick D because of the word BECAUSE. The wood, grass, or rice stalks weren’t damp BECAUSE it took him thirty minutes or more to get the fire started. Just the opposite is true.
