Success Mentor Position Description Success Mentor Program – Bright Success Center 2017 – 2018 Academic Year Questions? Contact [email protected] Application Deadline: February 22, 2017 The Success Mentor Program is looking for 30-35 student leaders interested in playing a vital role in the successful transition of new students to UC Merced during the 2017-2018 academic year. Through personal connections, Success Mentors will work with first-year students to build community, connect with and learn how to utilize campus and community resources, and develop strategies for success as a Bobcat. Position Details & Timeline $11.65/hour Spring 2017 – Training (20-25 hours total) Summer 2017 – Employment opportunities may exist for those who successfully complete spring training Fall 2017 – Spring 2018 – 6-10 hours/week Position Responsibilities Spring 2017 Participate in Success Mentor Training (March 18, April 8 & 15, dates subject to change) Shadow a current mentor during one mentee meeting Develop and provide resources or events for first-year students in collaboration with 16-17 SMP staff 2017-2018 Meet individually with assigned mentees (an average of 30 minutes a week) Empower first-year students to make a successful academic and social transition to UC Merced Work with mentees to define and establish academic and personal goals Connect mentees with campus and community resources Serve as a liaison between the Bright Success Center, the University, and mentees Develop and implement “meet-up” events for mentees in collaboration with other mentors Serve on a committee with fellow Success Mentors to further the efforts of SMP Exemplify the values of the University of California, including UC Merced’s Principles of community Qualifications In good judicial and academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 • Knowledgeable about campus resources and how to access them • Able to work with and support a diverse body of students • Excellent communication skills, including active listening skills • Effective organizational and time management skills • Able to work independently and exercise sound judgment • Familiarity and sensitivity to transition issues faced by first-year students, particularly commuter students • Able to work independently with minimal supervision • Experience with the Success Mentor Program as a mentee or mentor preferred but not required • Level 1 Bobcat Leadership Series certification preferred To Apply 1.
