ATCO STRUCTURES & LOGISTICSatcosl.com
With its roots in Canada’s first oil boom more than 65 years
ago, ATCO Structures & Logistics has grown from a small
Alberta father-son business to an award-winning worldwide
leader in modular structures, lodging support and camp
services, and noise and emissions control services.
ATCO Structures & Logistics is part of the ATCO Group of
Companies, a $16 billion dollar enterprise with more than
9,800 employees on five continents and clients in over
100 countries.
The 60,0000-square-foot manufacturing plant, located on
28 acres in one of Spruce Grove’s industrial parks, is one of
11 manufacturing plants worldwide. Each day approximately
100 diligent trades workers are capable of hammering out a
trailer unit, such as a seven-bedroom modular camp or office
site trailer bound for Fort McMurray. The plant provides a large
selection of modular office trailer units, commercial offices,
lavatories, blast resistant buildings, and a complete line of
workforce housing accommodations including dormitories,
kitchen/diners, and drill camps. An overflow plant that
requires an additional 25 or so administrative staff also rents,
services and manufactures at the site.
The constant buzz of construction activity has brought ATCO’s
Spruce Grove operation a great deal of success over the last
five decades, and the company attributes much of this success
to its strategic location within our city.
“When deciding on a location back in 1967, access to two major highways –Highway 16 and Highway 60 – was and still continues to be
the key advantage of the Spruce Grove location.”– Jeff Maw, ATCO Structures & Logistics General Manager – Structures
SANDHILLS MANUFACTURING LTD.sandhillsmfg.ca
After 10 years of framing houses, Paul Gutteridge began
building stairs in his shop on Sandhills Road just outside of
Spruce Grove in 1988. Twenty-five years later, he is now the
owner of Sandhills Manufacturing Ltd., a full-service
manufacturer with 50 employees that offers construction
grade interior and exterior stairs, finished grade custom stairs,
and interior railings. From the company’s three unique facilities
within Spruce Grove, which total 35,000 square feet, Sandhills
has grown to hold the lion’s share of the Capital Region’s
market for construction grade stairs.
“Our employees construct stairs for 25-30 new homes a day,”says Paul. “We supply stairs for approximately 60-65% of thehomes built in the Edmonton area, as well as some in FortMcMurray.” One major advantage that Sandhills has over its
competitors is its engineered wood product, Ply-Lam.
Gutteridge invented a machine in 2006 to generate Ply-Lam, an
environmentally sound and consistent wood product that does
not warp, crack or twist like conventional wood. The machine,
the only one of its kind in the world, allows Sandhills to offer
its clients superior stairs at no extra cost—something no other
stair manufacturer in North America does.
The company added interior railings to its products list in 2010
and looks forward to growth in this sector. Plans are in the
works for expanding in Spruce Grove. “This is where our kidswent to school, where we do our shopping. The vast majority ofour employees live here as well—many like the advantage ofbeing able to walk or bike to work,” adds Paul. “Spruce Groveis home. Locating here just made sense.”

SUCCESS IS...UTILIZING LOCAL
EXPERTISE
» The Edmonton region is one ofCanada’s most attractivelocations for individuals seekingwork, with the working-agepopulation expanding at morethan three times the nationalaverage.
» The short 10 minute commutefrom Edmonton encourageswell-trained individuals to work inour city, addressing shortages ofskilled and experienced workersand supporting commercial andindustrial growth.
» A recent study by Environics Research has found that commute time is thedeciding factor in choosing one job over another for half of Canadians, suggestingthat Spruce Grove’s local labour force prefers to work in the immediate area. The unprecedented rise in our population, combined with our excellentemployment opportunities and income growth, provide a solid foundation for alocal labour force in Spruce Grove— a big advantage for employers looking toattract and retain knowledgeable staff in a tight labour market.
AVALON GLOBALavalonglobal.com
Founded in Edmonton in 2001 by current shareholders Jodie
and Dana Stafford, Avalon Global E-Business Solutions Inc.
(Avalon Global) has grown into a dynamic business venture
that has enjoyed years of incredible success. The Staffords
moved their business to Spruce Grove when they were
searching for a community that would foster a successful
business and provide the ideal place to raise a family. While
they were originally drawn by the progressive feeling in the city
and the supportive attitude towards the local business
community, the access to local skilled workers has held them
in Spruce Grove.
“The advantage of locating in Spruce Grove is that we havegood access to great people who would rather work locally thancommute through the traffic and fight for parking in Edmontonevery day,” says Jodie. “I think that's key.”
From Avalon Global’s administrative and primary network
operations centre located on King Street at the heart of the
city, their knowledgeable staff provide network administration
and Information Technology support, secure data backups,
and virtual servers. Clients with a strong need for secure
data backup and recovery, such as professional and private
health-care clients, find peace of mind with Avalon Global.
The company’s services protect sensitive information for a
number of law offices, accountants, engineering firms,
dentists, surgery offices, and orthodontists, and prevent
costly down-time events.
Over the years Avalon Global has adapted and excelled within
the changing market. In January of 2013 Avalon began
focusing primarily on I.T. support and data management
services. The company invested in several new technologies
and developed a unique and highly advanced infrastructure to
facilitate their shift in focus. Their location in Spruce Grove
has allowed them to add new staff, work more effectively
with clients, and bring the network and secure hosting
infrastructure in-house. The Staffords look forward to a
future of continued growth and success for Avalon Global.
“The advantage of locating in Spruce Grove is that we have good access to great people who would rather work locally.”– Jodie Stafford, Owner of Avalon Global
HOERBIGERhoerbiger.com
Hoerbiger is an example of a truly unique home-grown business
success story. Toni Moretto moved his oil and gas field
equipment supply and maintenance company, Tritech
Compression, Inc., to Spruce Grove in 2005. In 2007 he
expanded the facility to its current 35,000-square-foot
capacity and invested in Canada’s first natural gas engine test
cell. This highly specialized piece of equipment allows the
company to rebuild engines and test them back to
manufacturer’s specifications, a rare opportunity that garnered
the attention of Hoerbiger Holding AG, a worldwide leader in
compression, automation, and drive technology. In 2009,
Tritech Compression was purchased by Hoerbiger and now
operates as a business division of the globally recognized
company.
With over a century of experience, Hoerbiger is present in
more than 60 countries and has over 7,000 employees,
2,000 of which are engineers. At the Spruce Grove site,
approximately 60 people work within the world-class repair
shop, handling the largest of industry’s engines with a
40 tonne overhead crane, repairing or remanufacturing engine
and compressor components in the machine shop, and
performing research and development in the Dynamometer
facility.
“We have an incredibly diverse employee base,” says Moretto.
“Our people are from the local area, but also from Austria,Brazil, Holland, India, the list goes on. They’re happy to live inSpruce Grove. We’ve got the best of both worlds here, with thequiet, small town feel and easy access to Edmonton’s big-cityamenities.”
Spruce Grove’s infrastructure and transportation network also
support the company’s ability to serve its international
customers in the United States, Asia, India, and Central
America. Hoerbiger’s services allow their customers to
exchange engines rather than purchase new ones, reducing
their downtime and emissions, and curtailing costs with a
reliable, dyno-tested end-product. The company has big plans
to expand further in Spruce Grove, to more effectively service
the world’s gas market.
“Our employees are happy to live in the community of Spruce Grove.”– Toni Moretto, Chief Business Officer, Hoerbiger
