Village of Bergen residents now have even more reasons to enjoy their parks, thanks to several recent enhancements made by the village.

Bergen Mayor Anna Marie Barclay says the Library in the Woods opened this spring in Hickory Park. Members of the Bergen Department of Public Works constructed the structure which was inspired by similar projects in Brighton and Buffalo. The library sits on a con-crete base and bookshelves inside can be easily accessed by opening the tempered glass doors.

“It’s on the honor system,” Mayor Barclay says. “You can take a book or leave a book.” A picnic table and bench nearby facilitate family reading and the mayor says soon Adirondack chairs (a memorial donation) will also be added. “It’s the perfect spot,” she says. “It’s in a wooded area near the walking trail and fitness equipment.”

She says the library and other park im-provements are all part of an overall plan to, “give everybody something they can go to the park for, and enjoy the park.”

The village’s five parks - Zuber, Carpen-ter, Ward, Hickory and Hartland - are now all linked by a walking path/trail. A map features points of interest such as historic architecture in the village, Mayor Barclay says.

An antique fountain, which was placed as the focal point of Carpenter Park on the west side of Lake Avenue in the business district, is now a working fountain with water cascading over its three tiers.

“It’s a really nice addition,” Mayor Bar-clay says. The fountain is not original to the park, but is similar to one which did stand on the spot, and is surrounded by memo-rial benches. “It’s a place where people sit and eat lunch or come to watch the trains,” she notes.

Previously, the village planted flowers in the fountain tiers, but the village DPW was able to get the fountain working, Mayor Barclay says. She explains that DPW Su-perintendent Gary Zawodzinski and his crew have also been busy at Hartland Park (which is the location of the village’s disc golf course) clearing the area surrounding the village’s former waterworks building.

The village has obtained grant money and plans to convert the building (which is structurally sound) for use as an all-season pavilion. The walls have been sandblasted and the interior gutted, the mayor says,

and when complete, it will be available to be used by community members and orga-nizations for gatherings, for meetings and additional activities.

The pavilion will be named in honor of W. Monroe Sage, the first mayor of Bergen. “He installed the first streetlights and side-walks, he was known as the ‘President of Bergen,’” Mayor Barclay says.

And that’s not all; baseball fields have been upgraded, flowers planted, new signs installed and new basketball hoops and backboards as well as pickleboard courts are being installed in Hickory Park.

The village has also expanded its com-munity garden on Church Street. “The community garden started in 2015 with five gardens,” Mayor Barclay says.“This year we have 18 gardens. The village planted two.”

The other 16 gardens are tended by families. The gardens are raised beds made of cinder blocks. The area is completely fenced-in and there is a sprinkler system for watering.

The village has also planted two Monarch butterfly gardens with both nectar and host plants to attract the pollinators. A beehive for honeybees was recently installed near the community gardens to help both the honeybee and facilitate pollination.

Mayor Barclay, who has a nephew who keeps bees, says the hive is known as a “flow hive.” The chambers are constructed at an angle, meaning the honey flows down, mak-ing it easy to collect “We are losing honey-bees,” Mayor Barclay says, “we are hoping to make a difference in our community.”

Finally, the village is hosting a four-week Summer Recreation Program, from July 18 through August 12, 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registration forms are available at the village office or on the vil-lage website. “There is no charge,” Mayor

Presented bySteven J. Thompson, D.D.S.This year will mark the

fifteenth anniversary of thetragic events of 9/11 andAmerica’s 9/11 FoundationMotorcycleRidewill againvisitthe memorials at Shanksville, the Pentagon, and GroundZero in a three day event tohonor those whose lives werelost and to raise funds to sup-port the First Responderswho willingly put their lives onthe line every day. As in previ-ous years, the ride will occurin August so as to avoid anyinterference with the obser-vances on 9/11 itself.  The 9/11 Foundation is runalmost entirely by volunteersand due to a very low oper-ating budget, 90% of fundsreceived have been utilizedto directly support First Re-sponders, their departmentsand families. Byron-Bergen seniorsrebuild wellness trails

Byron-Bergen Central School se-niors, Nick Dubois and Aaron Holley, rebuilt wellness trails on the By-ron-Bergen campus as part of their work-based learning hours associated with the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Com-mencement Credential.

Nick and Aaron completed an 11-day work experience on the Tamra Troke Memorial Trail. They cleaned out all the fitness stations, cut and lined all of the hiking trails, made benches and a new flower bed, and constructed a campfire area.

Vocational Coordinator Roxanne Noeth, CSE Chairperson Dr. Donna Moscicki, Jr./Sr. High School Principal Patrick McGee, and School Counselor Andrea Feeney were all thrilled with the hard work and effort the two stu-dents put into this project.

The Career Development and Oc-cupational Studies Commencement Credential is part of the four Regents Exams and one project-based program to graduation.

The project-based program requires students complete a career plan; demonstrate attainment of com-mencement level learning standards in the areas of career exploration and development, integrated learning, and universal foundation skills; satisfacto-rily complete two units of study (216 hours) in Career and Technical Edu-cation coursework and work-based learning; and have one completed employability profile or have met the criteria for the national work readi-ness credential.

Provided information(L-r) Mrs. Feeney, seniors Nick Dubois and Aaron Holley, Dr. Moscicki and Mr. McGee at a new marker and flower bed leading into the Tamra Troke Memorial Trail. Provided photo.

Volunteer Firefighters serve communities with social responsibility

Comments/Opinion

Do you know … that your firefighting force is an all-vol-unteer group and has been since the first fire companies were formed in the early 1800s? Do you know what that means to you? One definition reads: “one who chooses to act in recognition of a need, with an attitude of social re-sponsibility and without concern for monetary profit, go-ing beyond one’s basic obligations.” This is your modern day firefighter here in the Brockport Fire District.

Why do I ask you these questions and share this infor-mation? For one; many of you seem unaware of that sim-ple fact, and your proud, educated and ready to respond volunteers thought you should know. We do what we do, when we do it, for each of you; at all hours of the day or night, in any and all kinds of weather; for no pay. Why? Because we are dedicated to the cause, and because you called for us. To your home, to your office, to the side of the road, wherever your emergency occurs, we will come to your aid.

We train countless hours to learn how to react, respond and mitigate whatever that emergency may be; all for no pay. We meet state and federal mandates each and every year to be prepared to meet the challenges of an ever changing calling. Are we asking to be paid? Absolutely not!

Why is this important? As community volunteers, we save lives, we save property and we save you as a collec-tive group in our district hundreds of thousands of dol-lars in fire service taxes every year when we do not col-lect a paycheck. Are we looking for your gratitude? That is not the reason for this letter, though a kind word as we

bring that loved one up the stairs from where they fell, or after we saved your home from the ravages of fire with our quick response and modern apparatus, is always ap-preciated by our crews.

And lastly, if you are one of those individuals who live in our district and you recognize the need to join our vol-unteer ranks, we are always looking for more people like us; with an attitude of social responsibility without con-cern for monetary profit. We will teach you, train you and share experiences with you beyond your basic community obligation as a volunteer Firefighter. Please consider join-ing us.

Brockport professor honored by national organizationLieberman receives award from organization dedicated to advancing the blind and visually impaired

A book co-authored by a College at Brockport Distin-guished Service Professor is being honored by a national organization. The Association for Education and Rehabili-tation of the Blind and Visually Impaired has presented Lauren Lieberman and her two co-authors Paul Ponchillia and Susan Ponchillia with its 2016 C. Warren Bledsoe Award. This is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of visual impairment.

The award is presented bi-annually to someone who authors a piece of literature that presents new facts and/or concepts about blindness; offers a new perspec-tive on a fundamental problem in blindness; identifies a particular need in the field and results in a positive change; popularizes the life and times of people with visual impairments.

Lieberman’s book “Physical Education and Sports for People with Visual Impairments and Deafblindness: Foun-dations of Instruction,” published through The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) focuses on teaching the skills that will enable both children and adults with visual impairments and deafblindness to participate in physical education, recreation, sports and lifelong health and fit-ness activities.

“Teachers of the visually impaired and orientation and mobility specialists, during their professional preparation programs, do not get much if any information on how to include children with visual impairments into physical education, physical activity, sport or recreation,” Lieberman says. “This textbook fills this gap to ensure our professors and the students get this information.”

GCVM re-enacts Civil WarGenesee Country Village & Museum is

the setting for a Civil War Re-enactment and Encampment Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17. With nearly 1,000 par-ticipants, it is one of the largest Civil War events in the Northeast.

Each day sees two battles, one an open battlefield at 11:30 a.m., featuring cavalry and live cannon fire, and another in the historic village at 2 p.m. Lincoln historian and professional impersonator Fritz Klein will visit the Union camps, survey the battle and inspect activity on the Great Meadow.

The military camps will also be open for inspection during the day with mounted cavalrymen moving about the grounds, warming up for the afternoon battle. Artil-lery commanders will host a firing demon-stration prior to the morning battle.

Meanwhile, the historic village takes on the guise of a border town, with civilians busy trying to maintain a normal life, yet dealing with the wartime shortages, mixing school lessons and farm duties with rallies, sewing for soldiers, caring for the wounded and dealing with soldiers encamped around their homes.

The townsfolk will offer musical concerts, specialty shopping and vignettes depict-ing civilian life during the war while also featuring a fashion show of period clothing each day.

Museum hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs adults $20; youth (4 to 16) $12; seniors 62+ and students with ID $17; children under three and active military families are admitted free.

For further information, visit www.gcv.org or call 294-8218.

Brandi Zavitz’s English gardens on Cen-ter Street in Medina feature perennials and a pond. Ruth Shewan’s country garden is located on West Shelby Road in Medina and includes 12 perennial gardens and a greenhouse. Additionally, the landscape

Sorochty gardens outside the home in which she grew up and some of her mother ’s flowers continue to bloom and grow in the re-laxed border gar-dens and beds that feature perennials, flowering shrubs, herbs and vegeta-bles.

Sorochty wel -comes pollinators into her yard with a butterfly garden and a “bee house.” She says she is moving towards, “all organic garden-ing practices,” and is setting up a new composting system.

Sorochty says those taking the tour can start at any one of the six locations. “We will have a map of the gardens for you,” she notes.

The Garden Path Tour runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. rain or shine. In addition to pre-sale, tickets will be available the day of the event at any of the featured gardens.

Every year, volunteers meet on the Saturday before Memorial Day to beautify Hilton’s Main Street. The volunteers plant that day and maintain the flower boxes throughout the summer with the help of the Village of Hilton. Green Acre Nursery donates the flowers, Mike Kopek oversees the planting. Holly McNair organizes the volunteers. Volunteers this year included cub scouts, girl scouts, Hilton Heat U15 Boys, Hilton Youth Lacrosse, Knights of Columbus, Hilton Garden Club and Mainly Books. On behalf of the Village of Hilton, Mayor Joe Lee (left) thanked all the volunteers for their efforts. Provided photo and information.

Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C.

Chiropractic isHolisticChiropractic is a form of therapy that consid-ers the whole person; it may offer a variety of approaches to your particular needs. You can be confident that the treatments a chiropractor will offer will not include surgery or prescription drugs.

The fundamental concept of chiropractic is that a healthy body is capable of curing many of its own ills. And at the foundation of that concept is the belief that a healthy, properly functioning spine , from which nerves emanate to every part of the body, is essential. So chiropractors are best know for their training and skill in manipulat-ing the bones of the spine - the vertebrae - to make sure they’re in proper alignment. But their training and expertise go well beyond spinal manipulation. Your chiropractor might, for instance, recommend a regimen of home exercise or stretching to help in your particular case. He might use massage therapy or ultrasound - the use of sound waves to stimulate activity in deep tissue - or advise you on nutrition. Ergonomics - the study of how people interact with their environments either at home or at work - is an area the chiropractor may advise you on. And your chiropractor won’t hesitate to refer you to another health care provider if your problem is beyond his or her area of expertise.

Enduring the droughtby Kristina Gabalski

The ongoing drought conditions through the late spring and early summer have been a big challenge for me. For various reasons, I have a ton of annual material planted in my vegetable/cut flower gardens this year and the hand-watering is getting to be a drag. I should have a drip irrigation system in place for seasons like this, but I never get around to it, so I schlep with my watering can day after day to get the newly planted material established.

I’m sure your lawns and gardens are showing signs of stress due to the lack of a nice long soaking rainfall. Most of the grass has turned brown and gone dormant and even some of my well-established shrubs look wilted every evening.

Hopefully we will get some beneficial rain soon, but here are a few tips to help you make it through the dry times and drought conditions in your garden.

I am keeping my annuals watered (by hand - no over-head sprinkling) to get them established, as I will need to use them for flowers I am arranging for a wedding in August, but Cornell Cooperative Extension in Rockland County says to concentrate watering efforts on plants that mean the most to you, are difficult to replace, or are most valuable.

Woody plants like trees and shrubs planted this year or within the last few seasons will need to be watered as they don’t have the established root systems of older plants.

You may also need to give some extra attention to woody plants which love the shade, but are planted in the sun. Flowering dogwood, Japanese maple, rhododendrons, birch and maple are sensitive to drought stress.

My easy-care landscape roses have bloomed beautifully through the dry conditions. K. Gabalski photo.

Cornell says that even if you notice wilting of leaves on these plants during the day, they will recover at night if sufficient soil moisture is present. If plants do not recover overnight, water them to prevent permanent damage.

Morning is the best, if not the most convenient, time to water. Water slowly and deeply at the soil level, avoid-ing splashing water on foliage, which can cause disease. Mulch after you water to conserve soil moisture and keep plants cooler. For larger shrubs, set your hose on the ground over the root area and let it run at a trickle until the area is well-soaked. This allows the water to penetrate below the root zone.

Cornell advises not to fertilize, prune, or apply pesti-cides during drought conditions. Keep your plants healthy to help them survive the drought by monitoring for insects and disease. Keep garden areas weed free as weeds com-pete with your plants for soil moisture.

I’ve been taking note of which plants have held up the best in the dry conditions. My landscape roses have done very well, so far, as have my yarrow plants, blue false indigo and even my established hydrangeas and hostas are hanging in there pretty well with minimal additional attention. Plants in at least some partial shade are also doing better.

Here are a few suggestions from Michigan State Uni-versity for drought tolerant plants: Trees - White fir and Bur oak; Shrubs - bottlebrush buckeye, bush cinquefoil; Perennials - Yarrow and blue false indigo; Annuals - wax begonia and moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora).
