Congratulations to St. John Lutheran School, Rochester on their 2017 Incorporation of Plastics Materials Award and Second Place
Overall Finish at the Future City Regional Competition
2 www.SPEdetroit.org
Hello, Detroit Section Members:
We have had an extremely busy, but fun, couple of months since I last wrote to you. Our House & Programs Committee (Sassan Tarahomi and Bob Petrach) have provided several back-to-back networking opportunities for our Detroit Section.
On January 23, the ESD Future City Competition was held at the Novi Suburban Collection. This year, a total of 32 teams competed. The Detroit section also sponsors the “Incorporation of Plastic Materials Award” each year, and this year’s winning school was St. John Lutheran School, Rochester. The overall Regional Team Standings were:
• 1st Place - St. Valentine Catholic School, Redford
• 2nd Place - St. John Lutheran School, Rochester
• 3rd Place - Grand Blanc West Middle School, Grand Blanc
• 4th Place - Trinity Lutheran School, Utica
• 5th Place - Sarah Banks Middle School, Team 2, Wixom
I would like to congratulate all of the schools, instructors, mentors, and judges that participated in this year’s competition.
The “3-D Multi-Jet Fusion Printing by HP” Technical Dinner was held on January 23 at the American Chemistry Council in Troy. Thirty people attended this event, presented by David Tucker.
Then, on February 21, the dedication of the plastics laboratory took place at Schoolcraft College. This was a collaborative endeavor among Schoolcraft College, IAC, (International Automotive Corporation), and Krauss-Maffei & Milacron to provide the Plastics program with new equipment. Schoolcraft College and Dr. Robert Leadley, Dean of Occupational Programs & Economic Development,
President’s MessageWayne M. Hertlein
President
hosted this presentation. Please check out this new and dynamic program for the Plastics industry.
We had another Technical Dinner meeting on February 27. Thirty-two people attended this meeting, which was held at the SA Engineering Technology Center (SA Tech Center) in Livonia. The topic was “Lightweighting for Automotive,” presented by Kelly Chisholm of Trexel, in addition to a presentation of their cutting-edge technology and their new facility located in Livonia.
On March 29, the ESD Gold Awards will be held at the Henry Ford College in Dearborn with Dr. Pranab Saha to be recognized as the 2017 Award Recipient. We will also recognize Bob Petrach as the Detroit Section 2016 Outstanding Member.
From March 28-March 30, the Detroit Section, along with SPE International, will host the 2nd annual TPO Conference in Shanghai, China. We are looking forward to a great turnout for that conference.
Also, on April 28, the Detroit Section will be hosting the 23rd annual Materials Auction at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Make sure to RSVP for this event, as this is always a great event to get out and enjoy yourself.
Make sure to place the AutoEPCON conference on your calendars as well. It will take place on May 2 at the Troy Marriot.
Finally, ANTEC will be held from May 8-May 10 in Anaheim, California. This conference has been held annually since 1942 and presents all of the innovative papers on plastics from around the world.
We hope that each of you will be able to attend our upcoming events.

Membership Note: Even though you are a member of SPE International,
you are not a member of the Detroit Section unless you have selected Michigan-Detroit as one
of your technical groups. Members of SPE are entitled to select two Sections and/or Divisions at no charge, and to add additional
groups for only $10/year. There are many benefits in having Michigan-
Detroit as one of your groups.

e-Communications Irv Poston – General Motors (retired)
Article for March 2017 Trends & Topics Newsletter e-Communications Irv Poston – General Motors (retired) Check Our Website Regularly Electronic communication is great as long as you use it. All issues of our Trends & Topics newsletter are electronic and only on the web. They have many features like full color, hyperlinks, and bookmarks. For some people, however, the problem is finding our newsletters on the web. Just go to our website (www.spedetroit.org); they are all there.
An emailed News Brief is sent to Detroit Section members announcing the web posting of newsletters. Unfortunately, some members don’t have correct email addresses on file, and there are some SPE members in the Detroit area that are not members of the Detroit Section. Therefore, the News Briefs are not sent to them.
Several things can be done to help this situation: • Be sure your associates and contacts know about our website. • Forward copies of our emailed News Brief with personal notes. • Encourage membership in SPE, particularly with the Detroit Section as one of the
choices in addition to a Technical Division. • Consider using a personal home email address (maybe a free one like Gmail) for
SPE purposes only. • Contact SPE HQ to be sure your correct email address and Detroit Section are in
your Membership Profile (203-775-0471). Click here or at the bottom of Newsletter pages to go to the Detroit Section website:
www.spedetroit.org
Not only does our website have an archive of Newsletters & News Briefs, it also has information on Coming Events, Educational Programs, Scholarships, PlastiVan, and Essay Contest. You should make www.spedetroit.org one of your favorites and/or put icons on your PC, laptop, tablet, and smartphone. Please contact Irv Poston at [email protected] with any suggestions, comments, or questions about any aspect of e-communications.

The Automotive Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE®) Is announcing a Call for Nominations for the “Lifetime Achievement Award” (due March 31, 2017) for presentation at its 47th-annual Automotive Innovation Awards Gala on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at the Burton Manor in Livonia, Mich. First given in the year 2001, The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes leadership and technical achievements of individuals whose work — in research, design, and/or engineering, etc. — has led to significant integration of polymeric materials on passenger vehicles. The Criteria evaluated for consideration for the Lifetime Achievement Award are as follows:
· 25 or more years of experience and significant contributions in the automotive industry or automotive plastics industry
· Education/Degrees in chemical, plastics, mechanical, electrical, materials or other engineering and/or business management or related areas
• Leadership and years of service in SPE (Society of Plastics Engineers), SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), ESD (Engineering Society of Detroit), SAMPE (Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering) and other similar industry associations – including the size/number of members in the associations
• Patents awarded for innovations in automotive, plastics, chemical and other similar industry advancements
• Participation and leadership in industry technical conferences including number of papers presented, keynotes, and committee leadership
• Other industry awards received for innovation, research and advancements including but not limited to “Lifetime
Achievement Awards” from other associations, “Honored Service Member,” “Fellowships,” “Best Paper,” and other honors
To submit a nomination for the SPE Automotive Div. Lifetime Achievement Award, prepare a word document outlining the candidate’s qualifications using the information above as a guideline and please limit the information to 2 – 3 pages. Email your nominations to Dave Reed, SPE Lifetime Achievement Award Chairman [email protected] and copy Nippani Rao, SPE Lifetime Achievement Award Co-Chairman [email protected].
The SPE Automotive Innovation Awards Program is the oldest and largest competition of its kind in the automotive and plastics industries. This annual event typically draws over 700 OEM engineers, automotive and plastics industry executives, and media. As is customary, funds raised from this event are used to support SPE educational efforts and technical seminars, which help to educate and secure the role of plastics in the advancement of the automobile.
The mission of SPE is to promote scientific and engineering knowledge relating to plastics worldwide and to educate industry, academia, and the public about these advances. SPE’s Automotive Division is active in educating, promoting, recognizing, and communicating technical accomplishments in all phases of plastics and plastic based-composite developments in the global transportation industry. Topic areas include applications, materials, processing, equipment, tooling, design, and development.
For more information about the SPE Automotive Division and the Innovation Awards Competition and Gala see www.speautomotive.com. For more information on the Society of Plastics Engineers, see www.4spe.org.
