I. INTRODUCrION AND PROGRAM SUMMARY
During September 1994, Pine & Swallow Associates, Inc. (PSA) conductedsubsurface investigations of Site 19, Site 1307 and Site 1132, Eielson Air ForceBase, Alaska. The purpose of PSA's effort was to assist U.S. Army Corps ofEngineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) byperforming MicroWell® installations with on-site analysis of ground watersamples to assess ground water quality. Information regarding the equipmentand methodology utilized to perform the selected program is enclosed andresults of on-site gas chromatographic analyses of ground water samples forVOC are included in the Appendix.
Program Summary
PSA installed 33 MicroWells with 3 meter screens at locations chosen byfield representatives for CRREL at Site 19. Four of the MicroWells weresequentially sampled to provide a vertical profile of ground water quality. Atotal of 31 ground water samples and one surface water sample obtained from apond were analyzed with Hewlett Packard 5890 gas chromatographs in PSA'sfield laboratory for benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes (BTEX), for GRO

IL. FIELD INVESTIGATION METHODS AND PROCEDURES
GROUND WATER INVESTIGATION
MiaroWell Installation Equipment and Methods
PSA's study included in- FGRstallation of MicroWells for ground HIJI
water sampling and water level MicroWell Schematicmeasurements. MicroWells consistDiga
of steam-cleaned steel pipe whose
leading end is fitted with a drivepoint with an inside diameter of1.57 cm and an outside diameter of
Screen2.08 cm. Screens, manufacturedfrom the same material, consist of a Screen Slots
double row of longitudinal slotsI_ ~~~0.038 cm wide. Each slot is 5 cmI
Sumplong and is separated from the nextI
slot by 0.64 cm of unslotted pipe.DrvPoint
MicroWells were installed by a high frequency vibratory hammermounted on a VibraDrillO all terrain drilling machine. The VibraDrill K(100 iscapable, of driving 6.4 meter sections of pipe; to drive deeper than 6.4 meters, additional sections of riser pipe are welded on by means of an external steelcollar. The VibraDrill H641 drives 3.7 meter sections of pipe; to drive deeperthan 3.7 with the H641, additional sections of riser pipe are welded or crimpedon by means of an external steel collar.
Immediately after driving is completed, a water level measurement istaken with a Slope Indicator water level meter. Wells are then developed with aninertial pump to remove silt and fine sand that has entered through screen slots.Pumping continues until discharge water is free of sediment wherever possible.

Samples from MicroWells for on-site analysis are obtained in lab-dlean 40-mivials with septum screw caps using new polyethylene tubing dedicated to eachwell and sampling interval and following PSA sampling protocols. All othersampling equipment is decontaminated between locations by rinsing withmethanol and distilled water.
Sequential sampling is performed by driving the well screen to apredetermined depth and collecting a sample following PSA's standard samplingprocedures. A section of riser pipe is then connected, the well driven to the nextsampling interval and a subsequent sample taken. At each sampling level, atleast three well volumes are removed by pumping from the top of the watertable, the tubing is then lowered to the screened interval and another threevolumes purged before sampling. Samples are collected in lab-clean 40-ml vialsusing new. polyethylene tubing dedicated to each sampling level. Pump valvesare decontaminated with methanol and rinsed with distilled water betweensamples.
On-site Analysis of Ground Water
Analysis for BTEX and GRO is conducted in accordance with PSA'sStandard Operating Procedures. Prior to analysis, 10 ml of each sample isremoved with a 10 ml syringe and replaced with the same volume of air filteredthrough a second syringe needle fitted with an activated carbon filter. Samplesare warmed to ambient temperature, agitated for one minute, and allowed toreach equilibrium for five minutes. An aliquot of the headspace is withdrawn bygas tight syringe and injected into a Hewlett Packard 5890A gas chromatographfitted with PID and ECU detectors.
For analysis of DRO, a micro-extraction of a water sample is performedwith methylene chloride. An aliquot of the extract is then analyzed by directinjection into a Hewlett Packard 5890 Series II with FLU detector.
Headspace analysis is performed by direct injection without samplestorage or pre-concentration. Blank samples from syringes and sampling

equipment are run periodically to ensure sample integrity. Identification andquantification of analytes is by comparison with standards formulated withreagent grade compounds.
MiaroWell Program at Sites 19, 1307 and 1132
Site 19A total of 33 MicroWells were installed at this site by PSA's VibraDrill
KlOO at locations chosen by CRREL field personnel. MicroWell depths rangedfrom 3.3 to 10.0 meters below ground surface (BGS). Most of the MicroWellswere completed with stick ups and locking caps. MicroWells PS-6, PS-9, P5-16,PS-17, PS-18 and PS-24 were completed flush with grade inside road boxes.Sequential sampling was performed at four of the MicroWells, PS-10, PS-26, PS-29 and PS-30, at Site 19 to permit assessment of the vertical profile of groundwater quality. Two depth intervals were sampled at each of these MicroWells. Asample was also collected from a pond at this site.
Site 1307Following one refusal due to subsurface conditions, one MicroWell was
installed at this site by PSA's VibraDrill K100 at a location chosen by CRREL fieldpersonnel. This MicroWell was screened from 0.6 to 3.6 meters below grade andthe total depth of the MicroWell was 3.9 meters. The MicroWell was completedflush with grade inside a road box.
Site 1132
A total of 9 MicroWells were installed at this site by PSA's VibraDrill K1OO
at locations chosen by CRREL field personnel. All of the MicroWells at this sitewere installed with 3 meter screens to a total depth of 4.5 meters BCS. TheMicroWells were completed flush with grade inside road boxes.
MicroWell completion details for wells at all three sites are noted on thelogs in the Appendix.

Ill. ANALYTICAL RESULTS
GROUND WATER ANALYSES
Results of Ground Water Analyses
The results of PSA's analyses of ground water samples for the compoundsselected by CRREL field representatives are tabulated in the Appendix.
Discussion of Ground Water Analysis Results
Maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) have been established by EPAunder the Safe Drinking Water Act for all regulated chemicals in drinking water. These levels are used in this report for comparison purposes.
The MCL for benzene is 5 gig/L; for toluene the MCL is 1,000 gg/L; forethylbenzene it is 700 l.±g/l, and for total xylenes the MCL is 10,000 gg/L.Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes are constituents of gasoline. NoMCLs currently exist for DRO or for GRO.
Site 19
Ground water analyses at Site 19 showed that samples from PS-10A andPS-10B, PS-B3, PS-15, PS-17, PS-18, PS-22, PS-23, PS-27, PS-28, PS-33 and the pondsample were below detection limits for all target analytes.
Samples from PS-7 and PS-26B showed only levels of benzene at 5.8 4ig/l,and 4.2 gg/L respectively. Benzene was present above the MCL in 16 of theremaining wells at levels ranging from 8.8 gg/L in PS-30A to 480 pgg/L in PS-31and was observed below MCL at 3.5 gg/L in PS-29B. Toluene was observedabove the MCL in P5-3 at 3,200 gg/L, PS-9 at 1,300 gg/L, PS-24 at 1,200 i'g/L andPS-31 at 2,000 pgg/L. No levels of ethyl benzene or total xylenes were observedabove MCLs.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research & Engineering Laboratory 12/21/94Project: Site 19, Site 1307 and Site 1132, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska Page 8
GR0 levels ranged from 160 sgg/L in PS-14 to more than 31,000 gg/L inPS-24. DRO ranged from 1,200 gg/L in PS-14 to 98,000 Jgg/L in PS-24.
Site 1307Ground water analyses at Site 1307 showed no detectable levels of BTEX,
CR0 or DRO in the sample from PS-i.
Site 1132Of nine ground water samples from Site 1132 analyzed for BTEX, CR0
and DRO in PSA's mobile laboratory, samples PS-i, PS-2, P5-3 and PS-9 werebelow detection limits for all analytes. A sample from PS-8 showed only a traceof meta- and para-xylene.
Analysis performed on PS-4 and PS-5 showed levels of all the targetanalytes, indluding benzene above the MCL at 46 gg/L in PS-4 and 19 gg/L inPS-S. The samples from PS-6 and PS-7 were below detection limits for benzene.None of the samples exceeded MCLs for toluene, ethyl benzene or total xylenes.
Levels of CR0 in PS-4, PS-5, PS-6 and PS-7 ranged from 130 4±g/L in PS-7to 2,300 in PS-4. DRO was observed at trace levels in PS-4 and PS-6 and at 850pgg/L in PS-5.
This report is submidtted subject to the limitations stated in the Appendix. If you have any questions or if you would like to discuss these findings, pleasecall me.
