Substantive theories of Leadership

First assumptions

• Leadership implies a relationship to other people. That relationship involves strong bonds of loyalty, commitment and a shared sense of humanity.

Second Assumption

• Leadership is exercise over time.• Leadership cannot be exercised as a

single as a single act or event, as though nothing led up to it and nothing was acquired after that moment.

Third Assumptions

• Leadership takes place in relationship to some organization, institution and agency, or community.

Other assumptions

• Leadership is rooted in meaning. Leaders act out of deep convictions. These convictions are rooted in meanings, in central human values such as the dignity of human life, the promotion of scientific knowledge , the promotion of health of brotherhood, the need for social justice, or respect law.

• Leadership emerges out of vision. Leaders have a vision of what they and their colleagues can accomplish. While that vision flows out of the core meaning which guide the leader’s basic approach to life.

• Leadership emerges out of a dramatic sense.

• Leadership requires the articulation of vision and building covenant.

• The leader will embody the organizational structures, policies and procedures.
