She was accompanied by Janice Wamhoff, Bureau County coroner, and Kerri Hicks, a career advisor with Best, Inc. of Princeton, IL. During her years at North Cen- tral Ms. Conerton has seen in- creasing abuse of the stimulant methamphetamine, “meth,” which “scares me more than any other drug.” It causes euphoria, but it can also cause seizures, irregular or stopped heartbeat, coma, stroke, delusional behavior, extreme para- noia, and death. She has also seen increased opi- oid abuse. Ms. Conerton said that opioid use can oſten start when a person has an injury and is given a legal prescription for pain medi- cine containing codeine. e per- son uses it for too long and it be- comes a habit. e habit can lead to the illegal use of heroin, oxycontin, or the very strong drug fentanyl. Strong opioids can cause many bad effects including respiratory de- pression and death. Trained police, nurses, and EMTs have the drug Narcan (nal- oxone) that can be inhaled to im- mediately reverse the effects of opi- oids and save the person’s life. Ms. Conerton said that North Central provides treatment, coun- seling, and an intensive outpatient program. ese can be paid by in- surance, Medicaid, Medicare, or self-pay. North Central’s nearest office is at the Marshall County Health Department, Lacon, phone 309-647-1881. Ms. Conerton is di- rector of the LaSalle office and can be reached at 815-224-1610. Ms. Kerri Hicks also spoke at the meeting. She has worked with BEST, Inc. in Princeton, helping those recovering from substance abuse in Bureau county to find employment. She has a caseload of 100 clients, youth, adult, and dislo- cated workers. During the question period Fa- ther Mike Schaab asked how is pain treated without using opioids. Ms. Conerton answered that ibu- profen or acetaminophen can be used. Non-drug treatments include massage, acupuncture and physical therapy. In answer to another question about how to dispose of leſt over prescription drugs, Ms. Conerton said that the medicines could be taken to the Marshall county sher- iff’s office in Lacon or to the police office in Henry.
