Aspartoitscontinueddevelopment,ullscalesubseapilotplant trialswererequiredandITFworkedincollaborationwithWell Processingtosecureindustryundingromseveralinternational oilcompaniesoreldtrialling.Thisalsobroughtaboutthe opportunitytosecureurtherundsromDEMO2000andmarked thersttimethatthetwobodieshaveworkedinconjunctionto securesupportoraJointIndustryProject(JIP). The Solution: The18monthlongSWITJIPwaslaunchedinDecember 2008withsupportromourmajoroilandgasoperatorsand DEMO2000.Thetechnologyallowsorsigniicantreduction insolidscontent,providestwoindependentmethodsor‘on line’sterilisationoseawaterelectro-chlorinationandanew methodorsterilisationviahydroxylradicalgeneration-and alsoincludessystemsterilisation. The Method: WellProcessingdevelopedtheSWITtechnologytoallowreservoir engineersthereedomtothinkoutsidethebox.Becauseatopsides watertreatmentandinjectionplantisreliantonthedatagathered rominitia lappraisalw ellinorma tion,itmaybeina dequate orthe eldsneedsoveritsentirelietime. SWITgivesreedomochoicewithrespecttothenumberand locationoinjectionwellsitallowsorinjectionoasmuchtreated seawaterasrequired,whererequiredwithouttypicalhostplatorm restrictions.This technologyessentiallyallowsth edecisiononwater injectionneedstobedelayeduntilthereservoirisupandrunning becauseoperatorscanseehowareservoirreactsthenprovide waterinjectionasrequiredratherthanhavingtoestimateuture requirementsanddesignthemintotheplatormattheoutset. Implementation: TherstphaseotheSWITproject,engineeringdesignand abrication,isnownearingcompletionandthepilotplantisduetobe transportedtoNIVA ’smarineresea rchcentreinOslojor dorsubsea testing.Onceproven,thesubseawatertreatmentsystemwillbe combinedwithexistingsubseawaterinjectionpumpingequipment. The Outcomes: SWITexpandsthechoicesavailabletooperatorsandallowsor injectionoasmuchtreatedseawaterasrequired,whererequired withouttherestictionsandlimitationsassociatedwithusinga hostplatorm.Thetechnologyisbeingcontinuallydevelopedand otherapplicationsorSWITincludeboostingpressureinolder reservoirsandthedevelopmentosatelliteeldsthatwould otherwisebeuneconomical. Well Processing’s innovative subsea water injection treatment (SWIT) system is undergoing full-scale pilot plant trials thanks to support from ITF and Norway’s DEMO 2000 initiative. SWIT provides an alternative to topsides seawater treatment by doing everything on the seabed.
