The DigiTRON range of subsea instrumentation connectors
combines the many field proven features of the Mini CE connector
with the latest in design technology.
DigiTRON benefits include faster lead times and improved
flexibility. This is achieved by DigiTRON’s modular design
specification using fewer components.
Technically, DigiTRON gains high-density pin configurations for
more compact 7 and 12 way connectors. PEEK moulded inserts and
pins eliminate potential leak paths around the termination area,
while new louvred contacts minimise contact resistance.
DigiTRON connectors for ROV operation are considerably simpler,
stronger and more compliant to avoid damage while mating. A new
debris seal gives positive indication of successful mating.
High integrity is ensured by pressure compensation, two completely
independent oil chambers and built-in redundancy.
DigiTRON connectors are rated at 1000V ac (pin to pin) and up to
20A. They are primarily used for instrumentation and low power
distribution.

DigiTRON Technology Overview
4
Controlled Environment (CE) Principle
DigiTRON connectors are based around the
unique and patented Controlled
Environment (CE) principle. This
arrangement ensures the highest level of
integrity for long life and repeated subsea
mating capability.
The CE plug features an oil-filled primary
diaphragm to prevent water ingress.
Each electrical socket is further
protected within an individual secondary
oil-filled diaphragm.
Both diaphragms have individual seals,
failure of either seal does not
compromise the connector’s integrity.
Shuttle pins prevent water ingress or loss
of oil when the connector is not mated.
Insulated pins on the receptacle
connector displace the shuttle pins
during the mating process. The
conductive tips of the pins are wiped
twice before making contact with the
electrical socket.
The whole assembly is pressure
balanced to minimise stress within the
sealing areas.

2 Receptacle Pin engage with shuttle pin of plug assembly
3 Receptacle Pin enters first oil chamber of the primary diaphragm and pushes back the shuttle pin
4 Receptacle Pin enters secondary diaphragm and makes full contact with plug contact pin
Technical Philosophy
1 Work with Nature where possible - use
pressure balancing to minimise material
stress.
2 Use modular systems to achieve
maximum flexibility whilst utilising
proven components.
3 Include at least one level of redundancy
on high integrity connectors.
4 Mechanical gland sealing avoids many
problems associated with moulding to
cable sheaths.
5 Ensure material compatibility and
traceability - the majority of Tronic
subsea connectors have a twenty five
year design life with no requirement for
servicing.
™
Termination Methods
6
Cable Termination
After termination and testing, the gland
housing is filled with hydrophobic
dielectric gel. When deployed, a
diaphragm subjects the gel to ambient
seawater pressure, preventing water
ingress and minimising material stress.
Termination sleeves over the solder cups
provide the conductors with a continuous
insulating layer.
A cable-to-conductor boot seals the
gland cavity from the cable. This
prevents water ingress from the spaces
between the conductors in the event of
cable sheath damage.
The compression cable seal performs
consistently – even when assembled in
difficult conditions.

CE Principle - Sequence of Operations
Oil tube termination
Oil Tube Termination
Oil-filled Hydracon 2500 hose containing a
number of sheathed conductors can be used
as an alternative to cable and glands.
Connectors and oil tube are supplied as a
complete harness.
Pressure compensation is provided by
the flexibility of the tube.
Short oil tube jumpers are significantly
simpler and less expensive than cable
equivalents.
Complex cable harnesses can be
constructed from connectors, tee pieces
and junction boxes.
Bulkhead Termination
Bulkhead mounted connectors are used
where a disconnectable interface is required
at the boundary of an environmentally sealed
enclosure.
Example applications include: subsea control
modules, junction boxes and subsea power
distribution modules.

DigiTRON Range - Product Selection
10
This catalogue describes the standard connectors within
the DigiTRON range.
Standard connectors are generally available at shorter lead
times than less common or bespoke connectors.
Non-standard configurations include:
Right angle cable exits
Extended glands to accommodate crimps facilitating
termination to conductors bigger than 4.0 mm
Plug or Receptacle?
DigiTRON plug connectors contain electrical sockets
protected by pressure balanced dielectric fluid.
Receptacles contain pin inserts (male). Plugs are inserted
into receptacles - hence their respective names.
The choice between plug and receptacle is usually dictated
by system configuration. There are three primary
considerations:
1 If a voltage is to be applied to the connector whilst
unmated, then a plug must be used. Receptacles must
NEVER be live whilst unmated
2 Receptacle connector pins must not be left exposed to
seawater for more than 28 days over the system
lifetime. A dummy plug connector should be used
wherever practical
3 Some system designers prefer to use plug connectors
(the more complicated component) on recoverable
equipment
In-line Plug Connector (A)
In-line plug connectors are fitted with socket contacts
within an oil-filled environment and are terminated to a
segment of cable or oil tube.
In-line Receptacle Connector (B)
In-line receptacle connectors are fitted with male pin
contacts and are terminated to a segment of cable or oil
tube.
When mated, the receptacle's pins are protected by the
plug's dielectric fluid.
The use of dummy connectors is advised if the pins on
receptacles are likely to be exposed to seawater for any
significant period. The advised maximum cumulative
exposure over the life of the system is 28 days, although
some pin deterioration may occur in a shorter period.
Bulkhead Connectors (G&H)
Bulkhead connectors are used where a disconnectable
interface is required at the boundary of an environmentally
sealed enclosure. Applications include oil-filled subsea
control modules, junction boxes and instrument housings.
The environmental seal is achieved by face and barrel O
rings. Solder cups are provided at the inboard side of the
connector for end-user termination. Inboard tails and / or
termination sleeves can be specified at order time.

Dummy Connectors
Full-function dummy connectors are similar to in-line
connectors, with a blank backshell replacing the cable
gland or oil tube adaptor.
Dummies can be supplied with three distinct wiring
configurations:
1 Open circuit
2 Specified contacts shorted
3 Specified contacts wired together with resistors;
Wiring and resistor requirements are specified at time
of order
Dummy Plug (L)
There are three principal uses for dummy plugs:
1 To mechanically and electrically protect the pins on a
receptacle that might otherwise be exposed to
seawater
2 To provide a short across the pins of a receptacle
connector for subsea test purposes – e.g. monitoring
the condition of an umbilical during deployment
3 To prevent marine growth and sand / silt deposits on
an unmated receptacle
Wiring and resistor requirements are specified at time of
order.
Dummy / Shorting / Parking Receptacle (M)
The three principal uses for dummy receptacles are:
1 To provide a short across the sockets of a plug
connector for subsea testing – e.g. monitoring the
condition of an Umbilical during deployment
2 Somewhere to fix (park) a spare plug on a subsea
installation. A flange-mounted receptacle connector
without the pin insert is often used for this purpose
3 To prevent marine growth and sand / silt deposits on
an unmated plug
Protective Caps (P&R)
The use of black acetal caps is recommended to protect
connectors during transport and storage, prior to subsea
deployment.
Test Plugs and Receptacles (T)
Test plugs and receptacles are used for cost-effective
factory testing of a system without risk of damage to the
gold-plated connector contacts.

7 way Stab Plate plug & receptacle for oil tube
Stab Plate Deployment
The stab plates provide movement and
clamping force for mate / demate
Floating mounts on one connector
accommodate misalignment.
Standard connectors suit popular
hydraulic coupler stab plate
configurations.
Stab Plate Notes
1 Stab plate connectors are manufactured
from 316L stainless steel, and must be
connected to a corrosion protection
system
2 Due to the number of different stab plate
connector configurations, Tronic
recommend that stab plate connectors
are specified and purchased in pairs.
For this reason, DigiTRON stab plate
connectors are not directly compatible
with Mini CE
3 The use of dummy connectors is advised
if the pins on receptacles are likely to be
exposed to seawater. The advised
maximum cumulative exposure over the
life of the connector is 28 days, although
some pin deterioration may occur in a
shorter period.

Fixed & Floating Mounts
One connector in a stab plate pair is normally
fitted with floating mounts, the other is fixed.
Floating mounts allow approximately ± 1 mm
movement laterally. The following tables
include a reference to fixed or floating to
differentiate the two types of mounting.
Split Flanges
Split flanges can be provided so that
pre-terminated harnesses can be passed
through the hole in the stab plate and then
fixed from the other side. Please contact
customer support for details.
Large Conductors
DigiTRON solder cups can accommodate
conductors up to 4 mm (12awg).
Termination to a cable with larger conductors
is achieved by using crimps and 4 mm tails.
A gland extension piece is used to
accommodate this arrangement. Please
contact customer support for details.

Stab Plate distances
DigiTRON Stab Plate connectors are
designed to be compatible with common
hydraulic couplers. Flanges on stab plate
connectors are 10 mm thick.
If both connectors are mounted on the inside
face of the plates, the closed distance
between the inside of the plates must be
100 to 101 mm.
If both connectors are mounted on the
outside face of the plates, the closed
distance between the outside of the plates
must be 80 to 81 mm.
If one connector is mounted on an outside
face, and the other on the inside face, the
distance between the two faces to which the
connectors are fitted must be 90 to 91 mm.

Diver Deployment
A threaded acetal clamp ring ensures
secure, low-force, clamping of connector
pairs without galling
Connectors are manufactured from 316L
stainless steel for a 25 year design life
when deployed in conjunction with a
corrosion protection system
Diver Notes
1 Four way DigiTRON connectors are
compatible with four way Mini CE
connectors. Standard DigiTRON
connectors feature a single key and will
therefore fit Mini CE receptacles of any
keying angle
2 Seven and twelve way DigiTRON
connectors are NOT Mini CE compatible
3 Diver connectors are manufactured from
316L stainless steel, and must be
connected to a corrosion protection
system
4 The use of dummy connectors is advised
if the pins on receptacles are likely to be
exposed to seawater for any significant
period. The advised maximum
cumulative exposure over the life of the
connector is 28 days, although some pin
deterioration may occur in a shorter
period.

Oil tube jumpers and harnesses are an alternative to cable. They are formed by pulling
conductors through the Hydracon 2500 hose, cutting to length, terminating the
conductors to the solder cups, fixing the oil tube to the connector backshells, leak testing
and filling with oil.
Hydracon 2500 is more flexible than cable, and is often more convenient for short
jumpers and / or complex harnesses consisting of several oil tube segments, connectors,
sensors, actuators and marshalling or junction boxes.
Complex harnesses and jumpers can be procured on a single
purchase order, factory assembled in ideal conditions and
delivered with full warranty.

Junction Boxes for Hydracon 2500
Oil Tube
A major advantage of Hydracon‚ 2500 oil tube is the ease with
which complex harnesses can be factory assembled.
Harnesses can include connectors, actuators, sensors and
junction boxes. The junction box usually serves one of two
purposes:
1 Distribution
One input signal is distributed to several outputs. An
insert facilitates insulation around the conductor
junctions
2 Marshalling
Several 2, 3 or 4 way input legs are marshalled together
into a 12 way output. In this configuration, no insert is
required.
Junction Boxes for cable
Although not as simple as oil tube junction boxes, cable
junction boxes are available in a wide range of configurations.
Cable junction boxes are usually oil filled and pressure
compensated. For permanent fixtures, cables enter through
penetrators fitted with pressure compensated cable glands.
Disconnectable Junction Boxes
Disconnectable junction boxes can be provided through
standard DigiTRON bulkhead connectors fitted to an oil-filled
pressure-compensated stainless steel chamber. Connection
is made by in-line DigiTRON terminated to Hydracon 2500 oil
tube or cable.

316L
DescriptionTerm
The standard grade of stainless steel used for most subsea connectors when a corrosion protection system is in operation.
Bulkhead mounted connector
A connector that fits into, and seals against, a bulkhead. The mating end of the connector usually points to the external side, while the internal side is usually fitted with tails to facilitate termination within the enclosure. Note that a bulkhead connector is similar to a penetrator except that a connector is easily unmated.
CE / Controlled Environment
Tronic's patented fluid filled connector principle. The electrical sockets contained within the plug are protected within oil chambers (the 'Controlled Environment'). During mating, the receptacle pins enter the controlled environment through seals, before the electrical connection is made in the controlled environment.
Dummy connector
Connector having a fully operating mating front end but a blank backshell at the termination end. Dummies have two main uses:
1 Protecting contacts that might otherwise be exposed to seawater.
2 Creating a loop between a pair of conductors for test purposes e.g. when pulling through an umbilical.
BulkheadA boundary wall separating fluids on either side. There may be a pressure difference between the two sides.
GelA self repairing, hydrophobic gel used by Tronic to fill subsea glands. The gel allows pressure balancing and is electrically inert.
In-line connector Connectors that terminate to a cable or oil tube segment.
Insert The centre part of the connector / penetrator containing the electrical contacts.
Instrumentation Typically the range catered for by the DigiTRON connector i.e. up to 1000V and 20A.
Hydracon 2500 Tronic's registered trademark for the oil tube system sometimes used as alternative to cable.
Gland
Flange mountedA connector with a flange. Note: This is not the same as a bulkhead mounted connector.
Field assemblable gland A cable gland that can be assembled on site / offshore.
Cable to conductor bootAn elastomeric component that seals over the cable sheath and the individual conductors. Usually located within a cable gland where the individual conductors emerge from the cable.
Cathodic protectionAn electrochemical method of controlling corrosion, achieved by making a metal cathodic by means of impressed current or attachment to a sacrificial anode (usually magnesium, aluminium or zinc).
Connector Half a connector pair.
The part of the connector / penetrator where a cable is terminated.

Junction box
DescriptionTerm
A component used in subsea systems where several cables / conductors are joined together. A junction box contains an insert which performs a multiple conductor joint whilst maintaining conductor sheath integrity.
Marshalling boxA component used in oil tube systems to collect the inputs from several 4 way connectors to a 7 or 12 way connector. Unlike a junction box, signals are not duplicated.
PlugThe connector half which fits inside the receptacle. In CE terminology, the plug contains electrical sockets within oil-filled chambers.
ReceptacleThe connector half into which the plug is inserted. In CE terminology, the receptacle contains the electrical pins.
Redundancy Achieved by supplying a back up to key system components so that failure of one component will not result in electrical failure.
Shuttle pin The pin that seals the oil chambers within CE plug connectors when unmated. The shuttle pin is displaced by the receptacle pin during mating.
Termination sleeve A sleeve that fits over terminations, providing a continuous insulation path.
Stab platesTwo plates which contain hydraulic and/or electrical connectors. Enables remote mating of the connectors when the distance between the plates is reduced.
UNS S32550A superior specification of stainless steel (super duplex) used to achieve long life where protection systems are not available / reliable.
Test connectors
Low cost connectors, specifically manufactured for system testing. They are not waterproof and are usually fitted with long tails for connecting to test equipment. If a system terminates in a true subsea receptacle, a test plug is used to prevent damage to the pins.
ROVSubsea Remotely Operated Vehicle. Used to carry out tasks that are beyond economic diver depth, range or capability.
PEEK (Victrex Limited)PolyEtherEtherKetone. An engineering thermoplastic with excellent insulation properties.
Penetrator A permanent connection through a bulkhead.
Oil tubeAn alternative to cable for subsea jumpers. The conductors are contained within a pressure-balanced oil-filled hose rather than within a cable.
Parking receptacleParking receptacles are very simple devices that allow a loose CE plug connector to be 'parked' or fixed. CE plug connectors do not need dummy connectors as the sockets are protected from seawater by the oil chambers.
