VERDI REQUIEMNATIONAL ARTS CENTRE ORCHESTRAAlexander Shelley, ConductorOttawa Choral SocietySaturday, September 14, 2019 at 7:30 PM Join us for Verdi’s tour de force with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the

Ottawa Choral Society, and four fabulous soloists! Few works in the repertoire

offer the drama of opera and the thrill of spectacular symphonic writing

combined with stellar, virtuosic solo moments. Verdi’s Requiem will conjure

up both intense pathos and a sense of apocalyptic drama when conductor

Alexander Shelley directs a massive group of soloists, choir members, and

orchestra in what may be the mightiest mass in musical history.

ALL WE ARE SAYINGART OF TIME ENSEMBLE and RALSTON STRING QUARTET Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 7:30 PM The power of music to galvanize a movement and inspire

resistance is highlighted in this program of music that reaches

across genre, historical context, and message. The classical and

folk program features George Crumb's Black Angels for string

quartet performed by the Ralston String Quartet, First Prize

winners of the Banff International String Quartet Competition,

and backed by a live film mix. The program also includes music by

Frederic Rzewski, John Prine, Bob Dylan, and Dmitri Shostakovich.

A LITTLE BIT IN LOVE:BERNSTEIN AND BRAHMSARC ENSEMBLE with PATRICIA O'CALLAGHAN, SOPRANOTuesday, March 24, 2020 at 7:30 PM

Bernstein/Kaufman/Brahms Delight in the songs from Bernstein’s Candide, On the Town, and

Wonderful Town, and the beautiful Brahms Clarinet Quintet with

TSO Principal Clarinetist, Joaquin Valdepeñas. Leonard Bernstein’s

extravagant talents could frustrate many groups. The classical

music devotees would have had him compose more and conduct

less, the Broadway fans saw him as the saviour of the American

musical, and educators watched him demystify music (without

removing the mystery) — all of whom wanted him to devote

himself to the part of his genius in which they were most invested.

However, Bernstein pursued every project with the commitment

of the moment and he consumed life in much the same way.

Vivaldi/Pachelbel/Albinoni/Bach/Handel and more Founded in 1997 and named after the flame-haired priest, Antonio

Vivaldi, Red Priest has performed sold-out concerts in many of the

world’s most prestigious festivals and concert halls. Red Priest is the

only early music group in the world to have been compared in the

press to the Rolling Stones, Jackson Pollock, the Marx Brothers, Spike

Jones, and Cirque du Soleil. This extraordinary acoustic foursome has

been described by music critics as “visionary and heretical,” “wholly

irreverent and highly enlightened,“ “completely wild,“ and “deeply

imaginative," with a “red-hot wicked sense of humour.“

J.S. BACHBRANDENBURG CONCERTOS“AKAMUS” — THE AKADEMIE FÜR ALTE MUSIK BERLINTuesday, November 26, 2019 at 7:30 PM Few musical works are as adored, and as often performed, as the

Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach. Performing

them is Akamus, one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras on

period instruments. Having sold more than a million CDs, Akamus is

a highly successful orchestra internationally. Their recordings have

won all-important awards for classical recordings such as the Grammy,

Diapason d‘Or, Cannes Classical, Gramophone, Edison, MIDEM Classical,

the Bach Medal, and Echo Klassik. Revel in the joy of the Brandenburgs,

brilliantly performed, of course!

images of the influence of refugee populations on the culture of their

adopted countries during the baroque era. Performing the works of the

17th and 18th centuries, we will hear how French, English, German, and

Italian baroque music reflects the story of how migrants and refugees

influenced the culture in each country. Safe Haven features music by

European baroque composers including Corelli, Lully, Bach, Telemann,

and Vivaldi — composers whose interactions with migrant musicians,

impresarios, and artisans had a major influence on their work.

TARANTELLA: VIVA NAPOLI!VESUVIUS ENSEMBLEMonday, October 7, 2019 at 7:30 PM Enter the dazzling world of timeless Italy, with charismatic

Italian singer Francesco Pellegrino and his ensemble as your

guides. They bring us to the sunny countrysides of Southern

Italy with energetic Italian folk songs and more. Vesuvius

Ensemble's luminous performances paint a portrait of Naples,

Italy and its surrounding scenery with the spirited popular

music of the ages, giving colourful details of Neapolitan life.

The rustic instruments used (the tammorra, chitarra battente,

ciaramella, and colascione) combine with the chitarrone,

guitars, and lutes to create a unique soundscape.

ATTENTION STORM CHASERS!GAELIC STORM Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 7:30 PM Gaelic Storm is a true force to be reckoned with their

music fans adore the storytelling, the bluegrass-heads love the

instrumentals, and the rockers simply relish their passion. In

SCOTTISH SUPERSTARSBRAEBACH Friday, October 4, 2019 at 7:30 PM Breabach are the new Scottish music superstars on the world stage

—they are the herald of Scottish folk being embraced by a new

generation. Scottish folk music band Braebach was formed in 2011

and has already won the ‘Best Folk Band’ and ‘Best Album’ at the MG

ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards as well as nominations for ‘Best Group’

at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and ‘European Album of the Year’ in the

Songlines Music Awards. Breabach combine twin bagpipes, fiddle, bass,

and guitar with Gaelic vocals and step dance, a brand of musicianship

that has led to them playing worldwide, from Sydney Opera House

to Central Park, New York. They will also play music from their latest

CD, Frenzy of the Meeting, that is inspired by the positive innovative

culture hive of Glasgow. The energetic band has earned international

recognition on the world and roots music scene as one of the UK’s

most dynamic and influential bands.

THE SMALL THINGSA STORY TOLD THROUGH DANCEKathryn MacKay, DirectorDavid Archibald, Music DirectorMelissa Mahady Wilton, Director of ChoreographyDavid Dines, ComposerPerformed by H’artists and guest performersFriday, April 17, 2020 at 10 AM and 6 PM

Saturday, April 18, 2020 at 2 PM and 6 PM The Small Things is a story told through dance and spoken word and

video featuring performances by nearly 50 remarkable local

artists and performers with different abilities. Working with several

talented choreographers, the performers have created original

dance pieces that range from whimsical to awe-inspiring. As

the story opens, we meet H’artists taking a dance class along

the Kingston waterfront while enjoying nature. Out of the blue,

a construction crew starts to set up bright orange pylons. They

are building a new road. It will be efficient, modern, and most

importantly, it will be BIG! Progress — a great thing — or is it? In our

rush toward the future, do we risk losing the small things that many

can’t see and even fewer know how to value? The Small Things is a

spirited, narrated dance performance unlike anything you’ve seen.
