National Skills Conference 2017
On the 23rd and 24th of March 2017, the DHET and the NSA hosted the National Skills Conference and
Awards at the St George Hotel in Centurion, Pretoria. The two-day conference was attended by both the
Minister of Higher Education and Training, Honourable Dr Blade Nzimande well as the Deputy President
of the Republic of South Africa Honourable Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Director General of the Department of Higher Education and Training Mr Qonde opened the National
Skills Conference, speaking on behalf of Minister Nzimande under the theme: "Skills Development for
integrated and differentiated Post-School Education and Training System: Past, present and future".
The conference aimed to meet the following objectives:
1 - Deepening understanding of the reviewed NSDS and SETA landscape within the integrated post-
school system legislative and policy environment
2 - Strengthening the skills development system in the post-school system
3 - Promoting youth and productive work for inclusive growth
4 - Fast tracking artisan development and encourage international best practice on skills development
5 - Give social partners a platform to pledge support and commitment to implement the strategy
6 - To provide a platform for skills development actors to showcase their organisations and to disseminate
information.
This national conference was attended by 1000 key skills development stakeholders: SETAs, Labour,
Education and Training Providers, Community Organisations and Government Departments.
The President of SASCE Mr Carver Pop shared the challenges faced in implementing Work Integrated
Learning at universities and made recommendations for the review of the Workplace Based Learning
policy presented to Cabinet at this Conference.
Members of SASCE are asked to submit comments on this proposed policy as it will direct the
implementation and impact of WIL in transforming the nature and support for WIL as well as undermine
the power of WIL as a societal tool for meaningful transformation through developing employability
(including entrepreneurship skills).
Both the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Honourable Dr Blade Nzimande, as well as the
Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa Honourable Cyril Ramaphosa, challenged the sector to
do more to contribute to employability and improve the quality of education.

"Work-Integrated Learning: Enable Students Pathways to Employment" - Some perspectives on
students, teachers and the societal role"
In January WACE-ISO held a seminar at University of Porto, Portugal on Work-Integrated learning and the
challenges of enable students pathways to employment. The discussion were loud and energizing,
problematizing student and teachers role in the new work-life.
Testimonials:
"I want to take the opportunity to thank you for a well-organized and thoughtful seminar. Your leadership,
as well as, the content made the presentations very provoking. Congratulations on the very important
work that you do."
Dr. Eduardo J. Padron
President
Miami Dade College
"The WACE ISO Seminar on Work-Integrated Learning: Enable Students Pathways to Employment was a
great experience. The seminar with keynote presentations and subsequent group discussions was an
ideal way to learn from each other and share experiences with colleagues from other universities and get
to know how WIL is implemented in other countries. Learning from your peers is very inspiring, and
especially the mix of theory from the reading list provided before the seminar and the best practices
shared during the seminar was very beneficial. In addition, it was also a good networking event and I
already look forward to the next seminar."

OCEANIA
Since the last brief in November, the Southern Hemisphere has had their summer Christmas holidays,
meaning there are not many past events to report on. However, despite the holiday season, much work is
being done to prepare for some significant upcoming events.
News from Oceania
The ACEN NSW/ACT Chapter held its first forum of the year on 16 February (see digital images

NZACE now has a new chairperson, Dr Jenny Fleming (AUT).As arranged mid last year, our long
service chairperson, Katharine Hoskyn, stepped aside and Jenny has stepped into the
role.Katharine is greatly thanked for her huge contribution to NZACE over the years – one of many
achievements was Katharine’s ability to better link NZACE with other national associations and
WACE, including reciprocal conference access and collaborative work on providing online
professional development opportunities.Thankfully, her service is not entirely done just yet, as she
will continue on as a NZACE council member and within the informal capacity of ‘past-chair’.
The annual NZACE conference will be held on the 26-28th of April in Queenstown.Keynote
speakers will be Pat Linn and Richard Coll. http://nzace.ac.nz/2017-conference/
The Gobal WIL team (consisting of Oceania members ACEN and NZACE, with CAFCE and WILA)
are currently running two online modules; one focused on learning theories within WIL and the
other on Employer Engagement.
