MOOYCN Brief
Brief
We’ve updated our brand with a new tagline – Design Works Wonders – but our tagline is
so much more than just words: Design Works Wonders is our philosophy. It’s what drives us to keep innovating and producing beautifully
designed products that both we, and our customers, can be truly proud of.
In order to raise awareness of our philosophy, we’d like you to create a visual representation of
Design Works Wonders, bringing it to life through any format you’d like – from graphic design and
illustration to animation or photography.
We’re looking for something visually striking, something that will directly appeal and speak to our design-loving customers, whilst building
intrigue about MOO.
Research
One of my ideas is for to create an illustrative animation based around MOO current style of
illustration, with the use of half tones and simple geometric shapes. I think that would suit well to the brief and promote the tag line design
works wonders. I also think that will give me an opportunity to build on my animation skills and
progress in that area of visual design.
Nick Deakin is a freelance artist, illustrator and graphic designer from Sheffield, West Yorkshire. He has done many works for international clients such
as Coca-Cola and is now holds a full time tutor position at the University of Huddersfield. As I am a student at this University studying Graphic Design, this is where I was first introduced to Nick and what he has done in his professional career. As part of
getting to know all of our tutors, each member was ask to lead a lecture showcasing their work and this
is where I linked Nick’s work to my the MOO YCN brief.
Nick’s illustrative style and attitude closely match that of MOO’s with a sense of playfulness, the
use of halftone shading and bright colours. I hope to experiment this style but to give it another
dimension of animation and motion as to further capture playfulness and wonder. I will try to represent
the strapline “Design works wonders” using styles inspired by both MOO and Nick’s work in imagery.

Hive is a new app/service the British Gas offer for it customers, it basically allows for users to control the central heating from a mobile device. For the
launch of the new service, British Gas got a skilled art director known as Buck to produce a television advertisement that would promote this new ‘Hive’
service.
This advert uses a morphing and transforming transition to switch to different narratives. This
closely represents what I am hoping to achieve with my animation by morphing into different
representations of “Design works wonders”. The Hive advert also includes simple line illustrations that work very well with this effect and hopefully I can
incorporate this into MOO’s current illustrative style.

Like the Hive advert “Goodbooks” also created by Buck has a similar morphing and transforming
transition to switch to different narratives in the story. I find this effect to be not only be really pretty and smooth way of hitting different points in the story but also mesmerising. This effect gives me sense
of wonder as I find myself watching the story morph and unfold and because of this I had an idea to loop
perfectly the animation over an over.

IllustrationsHere is my attempts of following the illustrative style
of MOO with my own message of visualising the motto “design works wonders”. I think that I have
achieved this with the uses of stripped and dotted halftones to give the illustrations colour and depth.
Story Board& Sketches
For the animation I wanted to get my ideas down in my notepad, so i started sketching out the dynamics
of the animation. This included the forms of the illustration and how each object transitions into each other. My main idea is for the objects to morph into one another to create a fluid motion and a flow in
transitions.

Here a a few images taken from my final animation. The logistics of the morphing transitions seemed
to be very difficult to pull of in a professional looking piece of motion graphics so instead I used other means of flowing the objects along. I used quick smooth transitions to accompany the flat look of
the illustration. This has made a professional looking animation that visualises the strap line of MOO
“design work wonders”.
