Subjects and Predicates

A sentence expresses a complete thought and must have a subject and a predicate. It should also have proper capitalization and punctuation.

The subject part of the sentence names whom or what the sentence is about

Simple Subjects

Simple subject- is the main word or group of words in the complete subject.

The simple subject is usually a noun or a pronoun.

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or an idea

Ex. Tina, school, boat, invention A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a

noun Ex. She, we, they, he, it, mine, its

Ex. All people change their environment.

Complete Subject Complete subject includes all of the words in the subject

of a sentence.

Ex. (All people) change their environment.

subject of the sentence.

Sometimes the simple subject is also the complete subject

Simple Predicate

Is the main word or group of words in the complete predicate.

The simple predicate is always a verb. A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being.

Ex. running, swimming, am, be, seem, have

Simple Predicate The action verb change is the main word in

the sentence. The simple predicate may also be the complete

predicate.

Complete Predicate

The complete predicate includes all the words in the predicate of a sentence.

Ex. All people/ (change their environment.)

Sentence Fragment

Is a group of words that does not express a complete thought. It may also be missing a subject, predicate, or both.

Ex. Inhabits the woodlands- fragment

The fragment lacks a subject. Who or what inhabits the woodlands?

Sentence- (Wildlife) inhabits the woodlands.

Sentence Fragment

Ex. Under the shelter of trees.- fragment The fragment lacks both, subject and predicate.

(Whom or what) is under the shelters of trees, it is lacking information. No subject

The predicate tells and or gives information about the subject. It answers the what, or whom the sentence is about. There is no verb in the fragment.

Sentence Fragment

Ex. Healthy forest land.-fragment It lacks a predicate. (Healthy forest land) is the subject it does not

give any information about the forest land nor does it have a verb.

Ex. Healthy forest land support many kinds of wildlife.- sentence
