INTRODUCTIONThinking about life after secondary school may feel overwhelming. There is very helpful support available at school to help choose a career pathway. The focus of this support is to help students identify their strengths, what they enjoy doing, in support of success both at Edward John Eyre High School and post school. Strategies include and are not limited to; Personal Learning Plan (PLP), Career Pathways Program, attending Career and Subject expos, work placement and the EJEHS Subject Recommendations for Career Pathways. Resources like the EJEHS Subject Recommendations for Career Pathways resource can provide students a guide to the type of subjects that can be done in year 11 and 12 to support their identified pathway.
Post school pathways could include• Starting an apprenticeship • Continuing with further study• Finding work, starting a business or• Even taking a gap year.
There are so many options that it may feel difficult to identify a career pathway, but remember people can move between pathways and are not restricted to one occupation or education level. Many people return to study to upgrade their qualifications during their adult lives.
The three main post school pathways as identified through the EJEHS destination data are Vocational Education and Training, employment and University.
VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET) enables students to acquire skills and knowledge for work through a nationally recognised industry-developed training package or accredited course.
Undertaking VET may benefit students’ exploration of a variety of career pathways; it is not just reserved for a pathway within the trades (e.g. plumbing, automotive, and construction). Students can complete VET qualifications in a diverse range of industries, including business administration, veterinary nursing, aged care, or sport and recreation.
Apprenticeships and Traineeships combine training and employment. Work is balanced between on-the-job work/learning and undertaking a nationally recognised vocational training qualification as a paid employee.
BACK TO CONTENTS PAGE2
EMPLOYMENTA paid job brings an income, freedom and a chance to learn new skills and do new things. Getting a first job is not always easy and people often have to apply for a number of jobs before they are successful.• Remember approximately 80 percent of jobs are never formally
advertised. It is important to ‘access your allies’ and use any networks (family and friends) you may have.
• Get someone else to check your job applications and resumes.• Practice interview techniques.• You may not succeed initially, but try to remain positive.
UNIVERSITYAbout 30 percent of students go direct to university from school. There are however alternative pathways by transferring from recognised VET studies or undertaking foundation programs to help prepare students for university courses. When considering university it is important to explore the university and course requirements, including prerequisite Year 11 and 12 subjects. Young people need to consider the costs of university study and possibly living away from home. They should also explore the opportunities for work after graduation.
EJEHS Subject Recommendations for Career Pathways resource has been developed by EJEHS with consideration and information regarding the subjects offered or accessible from EJEHS, information from the SATAC Guide, Career Profiles from: My Futures web site, VET subjects offered or accessible from EJEHS and the courses offered through the three South Australian Universities: University of SA, Adelaide University and Flinders University.
EJEHS Subject Recommendations for Career Pathways resource should be used as a guide in consultation with the Student Pathways and Subject Counselling team at EJEHS.
THE KEY:RED indicates the subject is compulsory GREEN indicates that any subject will satisfy the identified
pathway BLUE indicates that the subject can be undertaken via Local
Delivery BLACK indicates this is the recommended subject to support the
identified pathway P: Prerequisites (Stage 2 subject) as identified in the SATAC
Guide AK: Assumed knowledge (Stage 2 unless stated)NA: Not Applicable
