Subject: MPH Elective Courses Policy number: MPH P&P 16
1. Scope
This policy applies to MPH students of all concentrations.
2. Background
The MPH degree is a 42-credit hour program with 19 credit hours of core courses, 12-13 credit
hours of concentration courses including a 0 credit departmental seminar course, 4-6 credit
hours of public health practice courses (a research project practicum - including a 0 credit
orientation to the practicum site - and culminating experience), and 4-7 credit hours of
electives.1
Given that electives may comprise 4-7 of 42 credits (~10- 20% of the curriculum), the electives
chosen must be of relevance to the program and to the scholarly and/or career objectives of
each students to ensure they support the student’s program of study.
3. Policy
Students may choose from a pre-approved list of electives. This list includes both
courses offered by FHS and those offered by other faculties at AUB that are relevant to
the program. The list is approved by departments, and subsequently the Graduate
Studies Committee (GSC). The list is made available on the website and appended to
this policy (Appendix-1-A) The list of electives is formally reviewed and approved by
departments and the GSC at least once every three years based on the experiences of
students in the programs as well as recommendations from departments. Academic
advisors, shall discuss with students their scholarly and/or career objectives and which
of the approved electives is most fitting. If students wish to take a course as an elective
that is not within the list they can do so by petitioning the GSC, with a justification of
how the course fits their scholarly and/or career objectives.
A course at FHS can be offered if at least 7 students register in it. In order to ensure
that elective courses are taught, the HPCH and HMP departments can offer a
maximum of 3 credits (of non- required courses) per regular semester2 and the EPH
and ENHL departments (which also offer
MS degrees) can offer a maximum of 6 credits (of non-required courses) per regular
semester.
4. Procedure
1. The GPHP administrative coordinator shall inform the HPCH and HMP
department chairpersons that no more than 3 credits (of non-required courses)
per semester and the EPH and ENHL department chairpersons that no more
than 6 credits (of non- required courses) can be offered per semester. The
GPHP administrative coordinator ensures that this is observed during the
revision of course offerings each semester.
1 Ranges in credit hours are based on differences by conce ntration area
2. The registration advisor shares the list of electives with students at the
orientation session and with academic advisors each semester.
3. During the advising period; the registration advisor encourages students to meet
with the academic advisor to discuss scholarly and/or career objectives in order
to facilitate selection of elective courses. Courses offered e a c h semester at
FHS are available to academic advisors and student during the advising period.
4. Academic advisors discuss with students their scholarly and/or career objectives
and which of the approved electives is most fitting.
5. Student wanting to take an elective course not on the list, should fill out a petition
form (Appendix 1-B) explaining the reasons for the selection with reference to
his/her scholarly and/or career objectives. The petition must be signed by the
academic advisor and reviewed for approval by the GSC.
6. Should any course be cancelled for reasons such as low number of students
enrolled, the academic advisor must assist the student in selecting an alternative
course.
7. Every three years at most, the GPHP administrative coordinator reviews the
petitions and collects data from the Students’ Services Office regarding the MPH
students’ enrolment in elective courses pertaining to the previous three Academic
Years. Any changes to the list are reviewed and approved by departments (for
courses relevant to their core public health areas) and subsequently the GSC.
Changes are then appended to the policy.
