> ; A n entrance to an upstairs suite at Black Panther headquarters, 2314 E. 79th Street, was destroyed by a bomb yesterday morning. . - •'

Two persons who were in the two-story brick building escaped injury.

Local Panther leader Tommie Carr called the bombing "an attempt to- stop the opening of our free health center that was to begin operations next Monday.

".;?,"WE DON'T KNOW WHO would want to do this except the'-police." he added. "They, were on the scene almost as soon as it happened." .

Cleveland Police Chief Lewis W. Coffey said the allegation was "ridiculous and not worthy of further comment. I don't think the good people of the community will pay any attention, to it." • •

Police and Panthers have been involved in violent confrontations in the past.

Coffey declined -to comment on the incident other than • to say it was being investigated.

THE BOMB HAD BEEN thrown or placed against a locked door leading from -the sidewalk to the second-floor stairway. The explosion shattered the door, blew a hole in the floor at the bottom of the stairs and broke upstairs windows.

No other^ damage 'occurred in the five-room suite, which contained, three examination tables, cabinets filled with.. mediciiWs and a medical sterilizer.

—-Willie R. Slater, 23, of 1839 E. 85th Street/said he was seated on a couch in the building when the blast occurred at 5 a.m. and was knocked to the floor.

" I ggi up and ran to. the front windows, but the smoke-was so,4hiek 1 couldn't see 2113'thing," he said.

"l£~ about three minutes. I hesrd the poli.ce sirens and fell to the floor in case there was shooting*. Two policemen came up the stairs and knocked on the door. One of them-had s gun in his hand when I opened it, but nothing more happened." .. •

SLATER .SAID HE WAS serving as a watchman in the building. •"•; , '

Also present was a.l6-year-oidyouth, who said he had stayed out late that night and did not want to walk home after curfew. '. ' • -Carr said the opening of the clinic will be delayed about two weeks while repairs are made.

Dr. Allan R. Liebgott, a resident internist at Metropolitan General Hospital, said he has volunteered to work in the Panther clinic as soon as it is ready. ,, ,„*
