TekNet!Throughput!Tests!%In%September%2012%TekNet%Ltd%installed%and%commissioned%the%first%SUB10%E1000%80Ghz%(E%Band)%Gigabit%Ethernet%Point+to+Point%link%in%the%UK.%%The%test%procedures%used%to%validate%the%performance%of%the%link%follow:%%

%%Before%running%any%tests%over%an%installed%link,%it%is%recommended%a%bench%test%is%done%to%establish%the%maximum%data%throughput%possible%when%connecting%the%laptops,%back+to+back,%with%a%short%Ethernet%patch%cable.%%The%results%obtained%will%be%the%benchmark%for%the%field%test.%%Bench%testing%was%performed%using%a%pair%of%Toshiba%Tecra%8000%laptops%running%Ubuntu%Linux%12.04%LTS,%and%with%Gigabit%Ethernet%cards.%%It%is%recommended%that%Linux%is%always%used%for%testing,%as%Windows%simply%can’t%address%the%network%card%fast%enough!%The%test%method%followed%was:%

%1500%Byte%MTU%payload%to%header%ratio%=%95.18%%1,000,000,000%x%95.18%%=%951,800,000%bps%expected%payload%throughput%%(Note%that%the%actual%data%rate%on%the%link%is%even%higher,%as%it%is%fair%to%assume%that%there%is%a%7%%overhead%for%TCP%headers%etc.,%but%for%these%tests%only%actual%data%throughput%is%of%interest.%%The%next%step%is%to%directly%connect%a%pair%of%Netgear%Gigabit%Ethernet%switches%(model%GS724TP),%via%single%mode%SFPs%and%a%long%fibre%patch%cord.%%One%laptop%was%connected%to%each%switch%and%the%tests%above%repeated.%%%Once%again,%a%transfer%speed%of%117MByte/s%was%recorded,%proving%the%switches%did%not%introduce%any%delay.%Switch%delay%does%not%cause%a%drop%in%throughput.%(Unless%the%TCP%window%size%is%exceeded)%%Bench%test%preparation%produced%the%results%and%confidence%necessary%to%move%outside%for%the%actual%installation.%The%E1000%link%was%set%up%between%two%multi+storey%buildings,%with%a%link%distance%of%exactly%2,945m.%%The%single%mode%fibre%interface%at%each%end%of%the%link%was%connected%to%each%of%the%Netgear%gigabit%switches,%with%the%laptops%plugged%in%to%each%one%of%them.%%The%weather%conditions%on%the%day%of%the%test%(18th%September%2012)%were%dry%and%sunny.%%Replicating%the%bench%tests%given%above,%resulted%in%an%identical%transfer%speed%of%117MBytes/s,%leading%to%the%conclusion%that%in%dry%conditions%the%link%speed,%over%the%wireless%path,%is%no%different%to%a%1%metre%patch%cable.%
