Class note on Salts & Preparation of salt by neutralization reaction
Grade-7
Definition:
Salts are ionic compounds that are formed when a metallic & ammonium ion
replaces one or more hydrogen ions of an acid.
Example:
Sodium chloride Ammonium chloride
NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O NH4OH + HCl NH4Cl + H2O
Here, from both the reaction is observed that the metallic & ammonium ion is
replaced by Hydrogen ion.
Naming Salts:
The name of a salt has two parts.
The first part comes from the metal, metal oxide or metal carbonate used in the reaction.
The second part comes from the acid.
The name of the salt can be determined by looking at the reactants
For example
Hydrochloric acid always produces salts that end in chloride and contain
the chloride ion, Cl–.
Other examples:
Sodium hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce sodium chloride.
Zinc oxide reacts with sulfuric acid to produce zinc sulfate.
Types of salts on basis of Solubility:
I. Soluble II. Insoluble

Worksheet on Reactivity series & Displacement reaction.
Grade-7
Now it’s time for practicing:
Please Start with the answer of question number5
1. Complete the reactions by using reactivity series. If no reaction will happen
then NO REACTION should be written in right side of that reaction.
a) Calcium +Silver Sulfate
b) Magnesium + Lead nitrate
c) Potassium + Aluminum nitrate
d) Silver + Copper Chloride
e) Silver + Sodium Nitrate
f) Calcium + Zinc Chloride
2. Reactions of metals with acids:
a) Calcium + Nitric Acid
b) Sodium + Sulfuric Acid
c) Lithium + Hydrochloric acid
d) Calcium + Sulfuric Acid
e) Zinc + Nitric Acid
f) Platinum + Sulfuric Acid
3. Complete the blanks:
a) magnesium + iron nitrate → magnesium nitrate + ___________________
b) magnesium + ___________________ → magnesium sulfate + zinc
c) _________________ + copper sulfate → magnesium sulfate +
_________________
d) zinc + ___________________ → zinc sulfate + copper
e)zinc + iron chloride → ___________________ + ___________________
f) Sodium + Water _______________________ +_____________________
g) Copper + Water ________________________________
4. Explain the following things:
a) Thermite reaction.
b) Why Sodium is kept under oil?
5.How will you produce Sodium Sulfate by using Neutralization
method.

b) magnesium + Sulfuric acid → magnesium sulfate + zinc
c) Magnesium + copper sulfate → magnesium sulfate + Copper
d) zinc + Copper sulfate → zinc sulfate + copper
e)zinc + iron chloride →Zinc chloride + Iron
f) Sodium + Water Sodium Hydroxide + Hydrogen
g) Copper + Water No reaction
4. Explain the following things:
a) Thermite reaction.
A thermite reaction is basically iron oxide (rust) reacting with aluminum to
produce molten iron. The products are aluminum oxide, elemental iron, and a large
amount of heat. The reactants are commonly or thermite mixture is aluminum
powder and iron oxide (rust) powder. When the mixture is heated, it starts reacting
as the aluminum is more reactive than the iron and aluminum forms stronger and
stable b Word equation:
Iron Oxide + Aluminum powder Aluminum Oxide + Molten Iron
So, aluminum is displacing Iron because aluminum is more reactive than iron.
onds with oxygen than iron.
b) Why Sodium is kept under oil?
Because sodium is reactive so it can be contaminated by reaction with
moisture,oxygen & cabon di oxide
5.How will you produce Sodium Sulfate by using Neutralization
method.
Sodium hydroxide & Sulfuric acid when be neutralized.
