Offshore tailing pipelines stretching about 3.5 km on Senunuseabed were replaced in March.

According to Aldian Reva Kurniado fromPTNNT Project Development Department, the pipelines were replaced because theirwall is approaching a minimum thick-ness, i.e. 37 mm, while the requirementprovided in PTNNT Tailing Permit is 33mm.

"We replace them before reaching theminimum thickness to maintain PTNNT'scompliance with the tailing permit aswell as PTNNT's commitment to theenvironment," said he.

The replacement was carried out bysome 100 employees assisted by atugboat and was finished in 12 days. "Itwas the shortest time we made. Last year,

it took 17 days," he continued.Aldian said the new pipe specifications

are the same as the old pipes, i.e. of HDPEtype (High Density Poly Ethylene) with1000-mm diameter and 92 mm thick.

The 3500-m pipelines were purchaseddirectly from Thailand following astringent bidding process. Indonesiancompanies producing HDPE still failed tomeet the required standard.

"HDPE pipe specifications required byPTNNT are very rarely produced in theworld. It is bigger in diameter withthicker wall that only a few companies inthe world have the capacity to produceit," said Aldian.

The pipes were purchased in spools of15-m length. At SWIS Sejorong, they wereconnected into one string of 240 m and

The West Sumbawa Regent KH Zulkifli Muhadli admits that PTNNT CSR programshas been successful in developing and improving farmers' income in WestSumbawa particularly at Aik Kangkung village, Sekongkang. The regent expressed

the recognition when opening the great harvest event and official opening of depo ORIVArice mill at Aik Kangkung (12/4).

"We have to be grateful that PTNNT through its community development programs hasperformed well. What we have done today is our common effort to iron out problemsfaced by the farmers, from capital, seedling, milling to sales issues," said Zulkifli.

H Wagimin Sastra Hadi, Manager Social Responsibility Planning & DevelopmentPTNNT, put that the construction of the rice mile is one of the successes of the facilita-tion program by PTNNT through West Sumbawa Economic Development Foundation(YPESB). The program involves all relevant parties in rice cultivation and its supportindustry, from the upstream to the downstream sectors in order to increase the farmers'profit.

"To date, no less than 218 farmers are fostered by YPESB on a land of 130 hectares, including 31 hectares of brown rice for Aik Kangkung village. In addition to developingthe farmers, the depo is used to implement jajar legowo (SRI) based rice planting systemand provide means of rice production, organic fertilizers and seedling loans," disclosedWagimin.

In addition to rice milling facility with a capacity of 1 - 1.5 tons per hour, the depoprovides unhulled rice storage with a capacity of 100 tons and opens an outlet that sellsall farmer means of rice production at reasonable prices. The program participants canbuy the means of rice production with non-interest loan that may be paid out after theharvest through an agreed mechanism.

PTNNT through YPESB collaborates with local unhulled rice buyer to buy dried un-hulled rice at farmer level as per the price set forth by the government. Approximately 70percent of the harvest is absorbed while the rest is used as the community food reserve.

FES Team Trained on Motor Vehicle Extrication

Accidents involving motor vehicleand being trapped in a vehicle ismentioned as the biggest epidemic

in this modern era. With mechanization ofindustry particularly in mining industry, emergency response teams (Fire Emergen-cy Services) are required to be able toperform controlled extrication of trappedvictims.

Specific techniques are required toextricate victims from trapped situation, particularly upon a prolonged time.Controlled victim extrication managementrequires Fire Emergency Service Extrica-tion Team to work closely with the para-medic team to dismantle the vehicle andsave the victims systematically.

With regard to that, SHLP Departmenthosted Motor Vehicle Extrication Trainingfor 60 members of PTNNT FES team. Thetraining sessions were divided into fourgroups at three locations: Townsite, PortSite and Concentrator on 2 to 20 March2013.

"This training is a part of skills develop-ment for 23 new FES members and refresh-er for senior FES members to maintaintheir skill in emergency service," saidSyafwanudin, Gensupv Fire Officer.

The main purpose of the training is to

improve technical skills on advancevehicle rescue by extricating and taking avictim to critical treatment unit in thesame or more stable condition than whenthe extrication started. This includeskeeping the accident scene from gettingworse.

Michael Towler, an emergency coordina-tor at Newmont Jundee Australia, who hasdirect experience in handling motorvehicle accident rescue, delivered theorieson use of equipment and scene securitywhen the rescue team approaching thescene. He also taught about techniques tohandle vehicle windshield, open lockeddoor that cannot be opened due to theaccident and extricate the victim from thevehicle.

In addition, the team learned aboutbasic knowledge on vehicle mechanismsin order that they understand the parts tobe aware of the vehicle cutting to avoidhazard that may befall on the rescue team.To extricate a victim, the team usedhydraulic Homatro-brand - a cuttingdevice - allowing the team and the para-medics to perform the rescue easily.

In the last session of the training, allteams were tested on an accident simula-tion with trapped victim inside the vehicle.

FES team trained to cut the vehicle door to extricatethe trapped victim.

The day has just started. The MalukPolice Office was still quiet. On itslarge yard two 6x8 meter tents and

hundreds of orderly chairs were set. Onlytwo people seem busy tidying bannersand some other instruments. While theother one was busy setting up the soundsystem.

A half an hour later, a convoy ofhundreds of motorcycles suddenlyappear and enter the police office yardall at once. They crowded around andparked their bikes disorderly. The silenceinstantly turned into noisy crowd due tothe roaring bikes. Some of them soundedthe horn for a long time along with verynoisy jokes.

"That is the situation when motorcycletaxis gather together. They always makejokes and talks that trigger laughters,"said Junaidi, Senior Supervisor Communi-ty Relations.

At a glance, in a big folk, they look likea biker gang, but in fact, they are not.Their presence on that day (15/4) was toattend the police chief's invitation toparticipate in safety riding training.

"This activity is the second held. Weheld similar activity last year," Junaidiadded. This training is a refresher on saferiding rules and practices on the high-way. It was an effort to minimize the rate

"In cooperation with PTNNT, Maluk andJereweh Police Offices routinely providethis kind of training at respective area. This cooperation is a form of PTNNT'sawareness in safety. Therefore, we arevery grateful for the support that PTNNTprovides," said Dhimas, a Maluk PoliceOfficer.

After a 30-minute instruction, thecommittee divided participants into somegroups of 15. While, other committeemembers set up arena by placing obsta-cle blocks made of thick plastic to testparticipants' riding skills and trafficcompliance.

"Ah…if the obstacle is as simple as that,it is so easy!" one of the participantssaid.

Underestimating? Yeah, almost most ofthem underestimated the obstacle.

"It seems that the obstacle is easy," aparticipant whispered to another partici-pant beside him.

A few moments, each of the participantstook turn and passed through the obsta-cle. At the same time, three Maluk officeofficers acted as referees.

In addition to riding skills and trafficcompliance, safety rule comprehensionprior to riding became the main assess-ment point in this training.

Sukri, has shown an example. On 13 February, during weekly Tripper ConveyorShutdown, the native of Jereweh that works as a Process Operator found out thatcontractor employees that were about to dismantle scaffolding failed to apply the

company's safety standard. Of eight employees, only two of them have personal locks. As a tripper area operator, he reprimands personnel having no personal lock when

working, although they only work at walk way as helpers. The alumnus of Alas SeniorHigh School (1991) also reports it to his supervisor.

"What he does has successfully minimized potential accidents and saved the contrac-tor employees from possible safety standard violation. Due to this finding, ContractorUser corrects contractor lock outs by providing the six employees with PADLOCKS andMELOCK, then resumed the task," said Superintendent Process Operations BurhanManurung.

Senior Manager Processing Ilyas Yamin also added, "During My Safety Journey (MSJ)program, there has been a commitment to look out each other, supervisors to subordi-nates, subordinates to supervisors, or between fellow employees. Sukri's action isconsistent with the program," he stated.

As a result of his action, the father of three kids born in 1973 receives a companyreward in form of electronic gadget or tour package. "I have not decided which reward Iwill choose. But one thing for sure is that I have received the offer," said the fishinglover.

To him, a reward is not his target. Being able to work at Newmont is a great andinvaluable gift. "Newmont has given me so many things," he admitted.

Indeed, since working at PTNNT (1999), he feels that he has a better life. "We are luckythat we have Newmont, unless, I might be still a laborer overseas," he added.

Isee various kinds of strange to verygood exercise methods. Frequentproblems that many people face are

they have friends that attend fitness centerroutinely and that invite them to go to thecenter and then they show some kind ofexercises. Unfortunately, 85 percent of theexercises are incorrect. I call it 'bro-science'.

I remember when there was someonegiving private exercise session to someoneelse where in fact he was not an instruc-tor. I approached him and he looked likewanted to defend himself and kept onshowing his 'broscience' energetically tohis friend.

He said: Hi, I'm Mike and I'm justhelping my friend. I also give him a littleknowledge on how to use equipmentcorrectly.

I asked him: Are you qualified to dothat?

He replied: Yes, of course, I am like anopen book.

“Never Rely on Broscience”

"Well, could you explain the importanceof excessive load principle and periodiza-tion phases to your friend? The 'Book' isend and closed straightaway.

I consider private exercise is like apeople looking for a lawyer. When youneed a good lawyer and he does not haveany qualification and certification, willyou follow his advices? I don't thing so!So, why people keep on listening to thosewho are also doing exercise together? Idon't know why!

never out train a bad diet', meaning thatwhen you have a bad diet you will lookand feel bad. Normal weight loss is 2lb(1kg) per week.

Muscle buildingWhen you need to build your muscles,

then get prepared for a short and intensiveexercise. The people spending one hour ofmuscle building exercise are often trainedby a friend using 'broscience'. When youhave >1 hour exercise session, the energywill come from your muscles, causingdamage to them and your fat reserve tobecome inactive. Logically, you need toexercise and restore them. Do the 4 x 45-minute session per week and allow 48-hour intervals between muscles groupexercises.

Fuel for muscle formationWhat I see from people's view on their

diet is they will never tell the truth of whatthe eat, but when you ask them to eatcertain food in certain time to achievetheir goal. They will look at you withoutexpression. If you want to build andrespect your muscles, protein intake isvery important. It is done by measuringyour body, let's say your weight is 80kg.Multiple it with 1.5g and we get 120g. Thisfigure is equal to the protein your bodyneeds during the days you do not exercisefor your muscle formation. Remember, chicken breast weighs 21g.

Now you know where the sentence "Youcannot defeat poor diet" comes from. Onthe exercise days, you have to increaseyour protein intake by 20% with proteinmilk before and after working out that Isuggest you to drink during your exercisedays. Normal muscle formation lost: 0.5lbto 1lb per week.

Decisive "Six Seconds"

TRAINING

Anegative rumor, no matter howminor it is may create publicopinions. When it is not respond-

ed immediately, negative rumors willhave impacts on company's image. Therefore, in anticipation of an opinioncrisis the company should be moresensitive, communicate in a self-confident manner, and deliver itsmessages persuasively.

Communication skills are important forall employees. "A six-second moment in astatement can be very decisive, whether itwill bring positive or negative impacts,"said Christovito Wiloto, the founder andowner of Power PR Institute Jakarta duringa Media Handling training session held atthe Community Hall, Townsite (1/5).

Many kinds of mass media are availablenowadays. Despite the variety, the topicsraised often have similar point of views.

"Although covered by different media

and journalists, most of the media coversimilar topics," he said.

Why? Because when giving a statement, resource persons are often not focusedand fail to give emphasis of what s/he istrying to say.

In addition, they do not use effectivebody language. Therefore, all employees(particularly those with a capacity to givestatements) should be able to expressthemselves as company's representativesand ambassadors in front of the media(especially when the company is havingunfavorable public image).

Corporate Communication DepartmentManager Rubi Purnomo said communicat-ing with the media is enjoyable.

"Only, staffs need to join training on thesubject matter before meeting the mediaand other stakeholders in order to helpthem communicate and become betterspokespersons," said Rubi.

"The amount of reclamation bond isdetermined by the Directorate General ofMineral and Coal based on the company'sproposal in its Five-Yearly ReclamationBudget," said Reclamation Senior Special-ist Fitrahjaya Kurniawan.

He explained that company paidreclamation bond for its reclamationactivities. It is aimed at improvingcompliance in reclamation of the ex-pit asper the plan approved by authorizedofficial.

Sustainable Mining Bootcamp (Batch III):

Changing One's Mind

Itend to be skeptical and even cynicalwhen hearing about the word 'mining".I used to have assumption that mining

would always mean a capitalist industryexploiting natural resources for thebenefits of a few people, and then itirresponsibly abandons the totally-destroyed environment. Apparently, Ibuilt my assumption based on informa-tion I collected from mass media andinternet. A subjective mindset I builtwithout even looking at the actualcondition of the mine area.

I finally had a chance to prove thatwhat I believed was wrong. The abovestatements are written by Farchan Noor, one of the 14 bloggers joining the BatuHijau Bootcamp Batch III in his personalblog. Similar expressions also come fromother participants such as Regy Kur-niawan, Harris Maulana, Eko Budi andMuthia A. In his blog, Regy Kurniawanwrites that mining activities will surelydestroy the environment. Negativeimpacts will always follow any miningactivities conducted everywhere.

"However, environmental impacts canbe minimized by the use of technology, and that's what we are seeing during thistrip so that we can give responsiblecomments, not just giving criticismsbased on data obtained from Wikipedia,Googling, or other people's opinions," he

said. For eight days (12-20/5) Farchan, Regy

and the other Bootcamp participants sawthe company's activities, such as mining, reclamation, safety and CSR directly. Inaddition to the dialogue with the manage-ment, they also have direct interactionwith the community, diving in Benete baywaters, visiting Comdev projects, tourismareas such as the beaches around WestSumbawa Regency,

teaching in schools, public healthcenter and visiting Mantar village whereSerdadu Kumbang film was made.

"In fact, Newmont is very responsiblefor the environment where it operates,"

Regy writes in his blog.Bootcamp is a form of the company's

commitment to operating transparentlyand is an education program for thepublic to provide direct information onmining operations as from rock excava-tion, processing, to mine closure prepara-tion; and the life of the communityaround the Batu Hijau mine area, includ-ing potential tourism destination.

Like the previous batch I & II bootcamp, this batch III participants come fromvarious professionals, such as universitystudents, travellers, photographers, freelance writers, businessman, environ-mental and CSR activits, and mineemployees.

Each team, consisting of five personnel, walked around thesoccer field once then heading to Basai Ate and returned tocircle around the field for one more time. The number ofparticipants' steps were recorded by the pedometer worn bythem in turns.

The challenge is how to get as many steps as possible inthe shortest time.

BHFC WinsDjarum Futsal Chalenge

Newmont Nusa Tenggara, Batu Hijau Futsal Club (BHFC) came out theIst winner of DJARUM FUTSAL CHALENGE PART II championshipparticipated by government and non-government agencies through-

"In addition, one of our players, Fadli awarded as best player," said M ZErvan, the team chairman and a player.

Page 29: Suara Batu Hijau XXXII/2013 EN

"Why would Newmont spend a lot of money on reclamation activities andenvironmental management efforts that exceed the regulation standards? What does it expect from investing million dollars with no direct economicbenefits?"

Such questions were raised by media journalists during a visit to Batu Hijau EastDump reclamation area that they consideedr to have way exceeded the expectations of a mine reclamation. Previously, they had received brief explanation on

mining process while enjoying the astonishing Batu Hijau mine they saw for the firsttime. Information on reclamation and environmental management were also provided towhich they responded with surprise when hearing the amount of money the companyhad spent on reclamation and environmental management.

A simple question and yet it is quite difficult to present a logical answer to satisfy thequestioner. It seems to be pretty "unusual" what Batu Hijau project is doing in relationto its reclamation and environmental management amidst the condition where most ofthe mines in Indonesia, and the world put more prioritize on profits than the environ-ment, or in a more sarcastic words, many companies only consider how to reap thehighest profits with as little as possible capital, including minimizing the costs forreclamation and environmental management. Profits are gained by leaving damage anddestruction. It is sad to see pits filled with murky water from irresponsible traditionalmining activities in Bangka island. Not to mention damaged ex-coal mine areas inKalimantan with poor reclamation without follow-up actions to restore the environmentcondition. Despite the fact that getting the greatest benefits with minimum cost (princi-ples of economy) is taught in formal education, one thing is often neglected - themorality.

Let's get back to the question. Firstly, reclamation and environmental management -according to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Regulation No. 18 of 2008 areactivities aimed at restoring or managing disturbed areas from mining activities.

Reclamation is an obligation for a mining company to conduct during or after itsexploitation activities. In other words, reclamation is an integral part of a sound mine

cycle. The ministerial regulation also explains the environmental management andmonitoringis to be applied by the party responsible in an effort to manage and monitorthe environment.

Why does it have to exceed the standards set in government regulations? This hassomething to do with Newmont's vision and mission to be the most valued and respectedmining company through industry leading performance, including environmentalmanagement aspects. Best achievement could not be realized just by doing usual orregular efforts, as they will result in regular performance as well. Regular activities arecommonly conducted to meet obligations or avoid fine or penalty, while it needsextraordinary actions to be "the best", including in reclamation and environmentalmanagement.

For example, the company spends approx. Rp1.3 billion to prepare 1 hectare ofreclamation area that includes the cost for developing final stockpile slope, distributionof overburden and compaction excluding the cost for planting vegetationson thereclamation area. The final stockpile slope is developed with 2H:1V inclination, meaningthat the slope inclination with a ratio of 2 horizontal and 1 vertical to ensure stockpilestability as per the geotechnical review. Once the final stockpile slope is developed, overburden of 2.75 m thickness is spread with compaction each of 0.5 m thickness. Allthe above are conducted to minimize potential failure and ensure reclamation successin stockpile area, both during initial and final phase of reclamation (post-mine reclama-tion), despite the fact that it is not arranged specifically thru a government regulation. With reclamation area size of more than 20 hectare per year, we can calculate the costthe company will spend to prepare its annual reclamation.

Another example is the process of planting the vegetation on the reclamation area. TheForestry Minister Regulation No. 60 of 2009 states that the criterion for successfulreclamation is 625 trees per hectare, while Batu Hijau has planted 1600 trees perhectare to ensure successful reclamation, although the company has to spend addition-al costs for plantataion and nursery.

Then props the second question: Why is it investing million of dollars with no directeconomic benefits?

The answer would be: reputation. It is true that the money spent for reclamation andenvironmental management would not result in direct material or financial benefits. However, with sound reclamation and environmental management the company candevelop and maintain its reputation, and it will thus maintain trust of other partiesrelated to mining industry, such as the consumer.

Currently, the consumers and stakeholders do not view mining products as a merecommodity, but they also consider the way to produce them. Are the mining activitiesconducted in compliance with occupational safety, social responsibility and environ-mental management? Are mining activities conducted by sacrificing the surroundingcommunity and environment? Or in other words, are the minerals produced using soundmining process? A mine product can tell its tale.

We do not want to have things obtained using incorrect or inhumane process. Amovie "Blood Diamond" may just be an appropriate analogy where a diamond is minedby sacrificing the environment and people's lives. A diamond is produced by leavinglong suffering to the people. How a diamond that should be admired for its beauty holdsbloody history on Africa land. A beautiful diamond has turned into a bloody diamond.

'Green product' term has been introduced recently to represent a product, which is not

RAGAM Batu HijauS U A R A

Suara Batu Hijau Issue 32/2013

Page 31: Suara Batu Hijau XXXII/2013 EN

gree literally, but which is produced using environmentally-friendly materials andprocess.

As for Batu Hijau project, the 'green gold' term can be used to represent the mineral itproduces (even though its major product is copper), considering that gold is a widelyknown mineral from generation to generation with its esthetic values. Green gold canmean the gold that is produced using environmentally-friendly process, not just meetingcompany's obligations to the state but to exceed the standard so that it can become abenchmark for any mining company in environmental management and being responsi-ble for the next generations.

With well maintained reputation thru beyond-standard efforts, the company will gainlong-term benefits with recognized image as a company that applies green productionprocess and therefore it will be easier for the stakeholders to accept company's pres-ence.

In addition, it will become employees' pride to have a chance to work for such acompany. On the contrary, it would be such a burden for employees to work for anirresponsible company that only focuses its attention to financial benefits withoutconsidering environmental management. When many critics attacking the companysaying it has caused environmental destruction, proud employees would hold their headup high to those critics saying with self-confidentce, "No, we are operating in a responsi-ble manner."

It is not easy to compete with competitors with similar business while having toconduct reclamation and environmental management. With the sale price and produc-tion cost that do not give additional margins, a green company has to pay its due tomake it. Talking about having direct benefits would not be appropriate here. Onlycompany's commitment from both management and employees can maintain soundmine operations with considerations being made to environmental aspects. With well-maintained commitment, the company's vision and mission to be the most valued andrespected mining company through industry leading performance, can be achieved.

When the gold turns into jewelry, the greener the gold the morebeautiful it would be worn and remembered because a productdoes not only play a functional role, but it can tell its tale as well.
