INTRODUCTION | PAGE 2

WELCOMESouthern Utah University is firmly committed to experiential

education, a commitment highlighted in this edition of Summit

magazine.

While much of the extraordinary work by individual faculty can

be viewed in the longer online issue of Summit

(http://www.suu.edu/academics/provost/newsletters.html), this

print issue highlights some of the extraordinary work by faculty

and students in the EDGE (Education Designed to Give

Experience) program, a new immersive learning opportunity in

Semester in the Parks, a new CREATE lab satellite on SUU

campus, and the fifth annual Festival of Excellence.

These programs underscore the belief that a rich educational

experience rests on the experience of education—that ideas

gain maturity and complexity from growing in an engaged,

experiential environment.

Brad CookSUU PROVOST

Publications and Presentations

Dr. Joshua Price presented “Measuring the Economic Impact of Sporting Events: Defining the Local Economy” at Western Economic Association International, 13th International Conference, Santiago Chile, January 2017. The sports industry asserts that sports franchises, sporting events, and mega-sporting events create a large positive impact on the local economy. Existing studies define the local economy in different ways and arrive at differing conclusions.  Using sales tax revenue from 1988 to 2011 from municipalities in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, this study examines the effects of mega-sporting events on the local economy. The key contribution to the literature this study provides is the use of multiple definitions of the local economy (metropolitan region, county, and city) to depict how results change based on how the local economy is defined. Results from the study indicate that results can vary based on how the local economy is defined.

The recently formed Investment Scholar Group, hosted visits from five professional affiliates this fall. These affiliates work in the investment and financial planning industry and met with the group as a whole and individual students. This group shows the faculty dedication toward connecting students with alumni working in their field of study and providing high quality applied learning experiences. More information on these activities and this group can be found on the group’s website: http://people.suu.edu/investment/

[photos can be found on the website - for originals, please email me]

Projects

Dr. Joshua Price created a new Student Group, with Dr. Bruce Haslem, called the SUU Scholar Investment Group, which provides students with the confidence, career vision, analytical tools and curriculum to best prepare them for a career in investment management. This group hosted visits from five professional affiliates in Fall 2016; these affiliates work in the investment and financial planning industry and met with the group as a whole and individual students: people.suu.edu/investment

Publications and Presentations

Dr. Gerald E. Calvasina and Richard Calvasina presented “Using Personality Testing as Part of the Employee Selection Process” at the Allied Business Academies International Conference in Las Vegas, October 27, 2016.

Dr. Shih-Ming (Howard) Hu published “Developing Low-Fat Banana Bread by Using Okra Gum as a Fat Replacer” in the Journal of Culinary Science and Technology, Fall 2016. This study found that okra gum can replace saturated fat in banana bread and can greatly enhance the nutritional density of banana bread without significantly sacrificing its color, texture, flavor, and overall acceptability.  Results of this study provide a gateway for further research with okra gum as a fat replacer in bakery products. Additionally, it could provide bakery manufacturers and culinary professionals with an incentive to enhance their formulas so that they can be used more rigorously as a fat replacer. Further development of reduced-fat banana bread could provide consumers with healthier bakery options, leading to improvements in the American diet.

Dr. Janice Scarinci and Gene Jeffers published a book chapter, “Theme Parks Greet Chinese Tourists” in The World Meets Asian Tourists, January 2017. The movement of Asian citizens across continents now occurs on an unprecedented scale. This book discussed the implications for marketing, planning, and policy which these tourist markets pose for good governance’s. The chapter on Theme Parks Greet Chinese Tourists, explores what has been and is planning to be implemented in the theme parks in the Orlando area to meet the specific needs of a rising number of Chinese tourists.

Music

Publications, Presentations, and Performances

Dr. Christian Bohnenstengel presented “Improvisation: From Folk Tunes to the Blues” at the 2016 Utah Music Teachers Association State Conference at Weber State University, November 2016. He also served on a panel, “Principles of Creative and Effective Practicing” with colleagues from Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, and Dixie State University.

Dr. Lawrence Johnson, along with a theater company of actors, singers, and dancers put together a staged radio show, “A Christmas Carol on the Air” in Cedar City, UT, December 2016.

Brief description of project and its significance:  This was a fundraiser for the Neil Simon Festival involving a production of an adaptation of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” written by Peter Sham.  I was the music director and pianist for the performances and the show involved several SUU faculty and administration as well as SUU students and community members.

Dr. Krystal McCoy presented “Singing Keeps Me Alive: Perceptions of Older Adult Choral Singers in Summer camp” at the Music & Lifelong Learning Symposium, Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY, October 2016. Dr. McCoy investigated older adult singers’ perceptions of choral singing during their participation in a sleepaway summer camp. Research questions that query significance of singing among the singers and the importance of context and social attachment guided the research. Results indicated that the summer camp provided a context for growth and reminiscing. The most significant perceptions of older adult singers in the camp were a sense of connectedness, learning new things, and reflection. This will influence policy and programs in the older adult community.

Dr. Krystal McCoy presented “Let It Flow: Conquering ‘Complex’ Rhythms in Popular Styles of Choral Music Using Continuous Flow in Space” at the 2016 ACDA Utah State Conference, Salt Lake City, October 2016. Dr. McCoy demonstrated and applied the use of Continuous Flow in space in the choral rehearsal for warm up and repertoire preparation. Focusing on unusual meters and the popular/jazz idiom, attendees worked together to foster a positive relationship with “challenging” rhythms in the choral context and learned how to teach these styles without fear of notation.

Dr. Krystal McCoy prepared and conducted an auditioned group of high school students in Anne Arundel County Maryland. This culminated in a final performance for the community, Harwood, MD, November 2016.

Dr. Krystal McCoy presented “Fostering Musicality and Appropriate Behavior within the Ensemble” ath the Utah Music Educators Association, St. George, UT, February 2017. An artistic performance often lies beneath the surface of a well-disciplined music ensemble. This session focused on rehearsal techniques and assessments that cultivate an individual and ensemble sense of professional artistry while performing, predominantly focusing on the assessment factors of ensemble contribution, musicality, and movement.

Dr. Krystal McCoy presented “Partnering with a Community Theater to Promote Lifelong Music Engagement” at the 2017 Utah Campus Compact Engaged Faculty Retreat Moab, Utah, February, 2017. The Heritage Center is a community venue where Southern Utah University ensembles and faculty frequently perform. Heritage Center constituents provide opportunities for SUU faculty community engagement through directorship and arts management. The SUU music education department and Heritage Center is embarking upon a new program offering community music engagement. The New Horizons International Music Association provides instrumental and choral experience to older adults of all training levels. This initiation will involve a tremendous amount of forethought and coordination, ultimately enriching the lives of older adults and teaching music education students the importance of providing opportunities for lifelong music engagement.

Professor Carol Ann Modesitt, Paul Houghtaling (U of Alabama) and Linda Lister (UNLV) presented “Taking the Scenic View: New Ideas for Opera Scenes Programs” at the National Opera Association Conference, Santa Barbara, California January 4-7, 2017. Opera scenes programs have been a standard component of college and university opera workshop training for generations. The challenge is to create performance and teaching experiences which are relevant for students and interesting for audiences. This session offered fresh approaches and reimagined the boundaries of traditional scenes presentations while retaining the pedagogical importance of scenes study (variety of styles, skills demonstrated and appropriate challenges)

Dr. Lynn Vartan attended the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, Indianapolis, IN, November 2016, and presented her signature mallet line for the first time at a convention.

Dr. Lynn Vartan hosted several performers on SUU campus:

In November 2016, Dr. Vartan hosted percussionist and composer Ron Coulter to campus and hosted a performance of his works and masterclass for the percussion students on composition and music careers.

In October 2016, Dr. Vartan hosted Patrick and Rachel Roulet for the Fall installment of her Satellite Salon Series.  The concert was titles “The Golden Age of Xylophone” and traced the history of the lost music of xylophone in ragtime music and early jazz.

In January 2017, Dr. Vartan hosted George N Gianopolis and Kathleen Rodlan-Silverstein for the Spring installment of her Satellite Salon Series.  The concert was titled “Composition Conjuring” and was entirely composer by Mr. Gianopolis.  Several SUU music faculty members performed and Lynn and Kathleen premiered a new work entitled “The Bells” using the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe.

Professor Peter Sham was the playwright and lyricist for A Christmas Carol on the Air, with Brad Carroll composing the score and music. The musical play was produced for The Neil Simon Festival and performed at the Heritage Center Theater in December 2016. The play originally premiered at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in 2004 and ran for 4 straight seasons. It was produced in 2012 and 2013 by the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, and now in its 7th local production, it will become the annual event for the Neil Simon Festival. This past year it included featured film and television star Tony Amendola as Scrooge, along with a host of local celebrities, including our very own university president, Dr. Scott L. Wyatt.

Professor Peter Sham (author of music and lyrics) with Dr. Keith Bradshaw (Orchestrations) and Brandon Scott Grayson (Transcriber/Arranger) are producing and premiering a new musical, Under Construction: The Blue Collar Musical. When an audience unexpectedly shows up at the theatre on an unscheduled performance time, an unlikely group of working class folk must trade in their hard hats for top hats and put on a show! The world premiere for The Neil Simon Festival will take place at the Heritage Center Theater, July-August 2017. This is Professor Shaw’s second Cedar City world premiere of a new musical work; the first, Lend Me a Tenor (written with Brad Carroll), premiered at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in 2007.

SUU professors have fun with the president in A Christmas Carol on the Air! L-R: Dr. Lawrence Johnson (seated), President Scott L. Wyatt, Kirsten Sham, Dr. Matt Nickerson, Peter Sham, Dr. Kyle Bishop, Michael Don Bahr, Richard Bugg, and Dr. Keith Bradshaw.

CPVA Highlights

Dr. Ali Siahpush, Associate Professor of Engineering, is providing STEM opportunities for SUU students and in-service teachers and students.  Dr. Siahpush was awarded an additional $25,000 through the NASA Space Grant Consortium to develop and oversee these projects: K-12 Rocket Proj-ect, a Sounding Rocket Project and a K-12 STEM Teacher Workshop.  The K-12 Rocket Project allows students to experience hands-on science and study meteorites.  Students will also learn about physics and mathematics, and how they are applied to engineering in the unique environment of space.  Funding for the Sounding Rocket Project allows SUU engineering students to compete in this summer’s Experimental Sounding Rocket As-sociation’s Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition in White Sands, NM.  The K-12 STEM Teachers Workshop, held on the SUU campus Febru-ary 24 and 25, 2017, provided professional development in STEM instruction introducing stimulating new concepts in scientific fields such as: plate tectonics, meteorites, origin of the moon, fate of the dinosaurs, and dangers to the human body in space.  Hands-on curriculum development activi-ties and materials were provided so K-12 teachers could not only participate but take the materials back to their classrooms, helping their students learn that science can be fun and enjoyable!

The Department of Physical Science recently hired Dr. Brandon Wiggins, a 2014 SUU mathematics graduate.  Since leaving SUU, Dr. Wiggins has completed a Ph. D. astronomy program at Brigham Young University, that included an internship and research at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico.  He is already making an impact in the classroom and on-campus.  Evidence of this can be found in the recent announcement that SUU student Morgan Taylor, who is a pure mathematics major and a physics minor was awarded a prestigious student fellowship to LANL that will allow her to attend a summer workshop in computational physics beside students from Stanford, Caltech, and MIT.  Dr. Wiggins not only assisted Morgan in applying for the positions but he utilized his LANL contacts to insure her participation.

The SUU Engineering program just completed an accreditation visit from ABET.  The self-study was written by Dr. Matthew Roberts, Professor of Engineering and Associate Chair of the Department of Engineering and Technology.  The ABET delegation repeatedly commented on the quality and accuracy of the materials SUU provided.  Their evaluation yielded no significant findings beyond several commendations and a single concern.  The concern centers around the workload of SUU’s four engineering faculty members.  The evaluators felt that the long-term health of our growing engineering program requires the addition of more faculty and/or staff members.  We are working together to find an avenue to address the concern of our site visitation team.  Our heartiest congratulations to Drs. Robert, Siahpush, Munro, and Bok on the very successful renewal of our engineering accreditation.

Agriculture and Nutrition

Projects

Dr. Randall Violett, with Dr. Karen Mock, Dr. Simon Landhausser, and Dr. Owen Burney worked together on Aspen (Populus tremuloides) restoration utilizing nursery-propagated seedlings on Cedar Mountain (October 2016-2019). Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a foundation species in the western US, where it supports high levels of biodiversity, provides important wildlife and domestic forage, and is prized for its aesthetic qualities. Recently, aspen has experienced widespread declines linked to a variety of factors including drought, pathogens, succession, and herbivory. With the range of aspen predicted to contract in the western US over the coming century, active management approaches such as assisted migration may be required. Traditional silvicultural practices to regenerate aspen focus on inducing asexual suckering through coppicing or burning, but these methods reduce genetic diversity over time and are limited to existing stands. Planting of nursery-grown aspen seedlings could address these limitations and has proven effective in mined land reclamation in Alberta, Canada, but protocols have yet to be developed for the western US. To assess the viability of a seedling-based approach to aspen restoration, seed was collected from stands in Alberta, Utah, and New Mexico and nursery-propagated following protocols developed in Alberta. In the fall of 2015, over 7,000 seedlings were planted in southwestern Utah in 15 wildlife exclosures. Results from the 2016 growing season indicate mixed outplanting success, with the primary mortality factors linked to rodent herbivory and early summer drought, the latter of which appears tied to soil texture. Additionally, uneven responses among seedling sources in the nursery suggest further work will be necessary to optimize protocols for southwestern aspen. Monitoring will continue in 2017 to assess the ongoing performance of the established seedlings.

Dr. Randall Violett organized the “SRM University Chapter Display” at the Society for Range Management Annual International Meeting in St. George, UT, January 28-February 2, 2017. Southern Utah University was well represented at the recent SRM meetings that were hosted by the Utah section in St. George, UT with 12 students participating in activities that ranged from employment workshops to the coveted plant identification contest. The SUU Range club won second place in the University chapter display contest. The SUU range club is advised by Dr. Randall Violett and he is very excited about the future of these competitive teams here at SUU.

Dr. Bhuvaneswari Sambandham published “Generalized Monotone Method for Sequential Caputo Fractional Boundary Value Problems” in Journal of Advances in Applied Mathematics, October 2016.

Dr. Bhuvaneswari Sambandham presented “Differential Equations Versus Fractional Differential Equations” at COSE Undergraduate Research Symposium, November 2016.

Dr. Bhuvaneswari Sambandham, with Dr. Vatsala and Dr. Vinodh Chellamuthu, presented “Numerical Results for Sequential Caputo Fractional Boundary Value Problems” at the Joint Mathematics Meeting, Atlanta, Georgia, January 2017 (invited talk). Brief description of project and its significance:  Recently, Dr. Bhunavaneswari and her colleagues developed the generalized monotone method for sequential Caputo fractional boundary value problem with mixed boundary conditions which are in terms of Caputo fractional derivative. They have obtained a representation form for the corresponding linear Caputo sequential boundary value problem in terms of the Green’s function. In addition, they have obtained a linear comparison result for sequential Caputo fractional differential inequalities with the mixed boundary conditions. The comparison result is useful in proving the monotonicity of iterates as well as the uniqueness of the solution of the nonlinear sequential boundary value problem. Their method yields the integer results as a special case. In this work, they develop the numerical methods to solve a linear sequential boundary value problem which will be used as a tool to develop the numerical methods to solve a nonlinear problem by a generalized monotone iterative process in a later work.

Dr. Bhuvaneswari Sambandham presented “Sequential Caputo Linear Fractional Boundary Value Problem with Numerical Results” at the Southern Utah University Festival of Excellence, April 4, 2017.

Dr. Bruce Howard and Michael J. Adams published “X-ray Analysis of Lead(II) Binding to Haloferax volcanii Malate Synthase” in Journal: Journal of the Utah Academy of Sciences Arts and Letters 93 (November 2016). This paper received the best biological paper award for this year’s edition of the journal. Michael is currently enrolled in his first year of medical school at the University of Utah.

Dr. Bruce Howard, Dr. Guizella Rocabado, Christiana Standler, Cody Black, and Blake Overson published “Use of the Bruker AXS SMART BREEZE™ System for Macromolecular X-ray Data Collection” in the Americal Journal of Undergraduate Research 13.4 (December 2016). The Bruker AXS SMART BREEZE™ system is a single-crystal X-ray diffractometer designed to collect data from crystals of small organic or inorganic compounds. It is typically equipped with a Molybdenum-anode sealed tube to facilitate data collection from small unit cells. SUU recently acquired this system, but chose to have it installed with a copper-anode sealed tube with the hope of using it to collect data from larger unit cells such as those found in crystals of proteins or other macromolecules. This is the first and only BREEZE™ system installed by Bruker AXS with a copper-anode to date. Here they show that this system is capable of efficiently collecting quality X-ray diffraction data from crystals of the enzymes lysozyme and xylanase. This capability to collect diffraction data from both macromolecular and small-molecule crystals greatly expands the scope of undergraduate research projects that can be addressed using this instrument.

Dr. Paul R. Larson and Dr. C. Frederick Lohrengel II published “Collecting Data to Construct an Isoline Map” in The Geography Teacher 14. 1 (January 2017): 25-35. Isoline maps are common exercises in physical geography and earth science courses on both the  K-12 and college level.  Students frequently are not exposed to data sources and isoline map construction.  This exercise contains both of those elements.  Students conduct a rudimentary surveying exercise to obtain data for a large-scale topographic map, and they use these data to construct a map.  National Geography Standard 1 applies to this exercise: “How to use maps and other geographic representations, geospatial technologies, and spatial thinking to understand and communicate information.”

Dr. Hussein Samha, with B. Singh, A. Diwan, V. Jain, A. Herrera-Gomez, J. Terry, and M. R. Linford published “Uniqueness Plots in Spectroscopic Ellipsometry and Now in X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy: A Straightforward Way to Show You Have a Statistically Meaningful Fit” in Vacuum Technology and Coating, October 2016. This publication resulted from a collaboration with scientists at BYU.

Dr. Hussein Samha, Shiladitya Chatterjee, Jacob C. Denning, Cody V. Cushman, Nicholas J. Smith, Paul Mack, George H. Major, Tim Nunney, and Matthew R. Linford published “Trends in Advanced XPS Instrumentation in Angle-Resolved XPS (AR-XPS) and XPS Surface Mapping” in Vacuum Technology & Coating, 24 (January 2017).

Programs

Working with Iron County Care and Share and Toys for Tots, the Iron County Holiday Assistance Program once again helped to raise funds and distribute toys, food, and clothing to nearly 400 households -- and 800 children -- in Cedar City, Enoch, Parowan, and elsewhere in Iron County.  Overseen by Pam Branin, the ICHAP continues to assist some of our region’s neediest citizens.  Key assistance again was provided by Jeff Lennert of the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, and the Utah National Guard graciously allowed use of armory facilities for a week-long distribution in early December 2017.  The ICHAP was aided by volunteers from local high schools, SUU, and the community.

SUU continues to lead other USHE institutions in the number of AmeriCorps student participants who volunteer through a UCC-managed program.  Overseen at SUU by Community Engagement Center Program Specialist Gabrielle Strand, nearly 150 SUU students are participating in the 2016-2017 year.  At a minimum, each student agrees to engage in 300 hours of service and, upon completion, they earn an educational stipend of about $1,300.  Some students pursue lengthier terms of 450 hours and receive a larger stipend, and all participants can renew for up to four terms of service.  Most of SUU’s AmeriCorps participants are in the Nursing and Education programs, while a few hail from Rural Health Scholars and CEC Student Service Leaders.  For more information, see http://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps.   The CEC continues to sponsor a number of student-led service programs overseen by Pam Branin.  An exciting new program is “Days for Girls,” an international effort that began in Utah and aims to provide feminine hygiene kits to girls and women around the world.  Cedar City is home to a local chapter, and SUU now has a campus program led by student Service Leader Cameron Robins.  For more information, see https://www.daysforgirls.org/

Creative Engagement Center

Director Todd PetersonWebsite: https://www.suu.edu/siel/creative/

The Creative Engagement Center manages the “Creativity and Innovation” track within the SUU EDGE Program and advises students who have chosen a Creativity and Innovation EDGE Track. In addition to curricular matters, the Center and its advisory council also develop and oversee creativity-based co-curricular activities. We also provide access to networks and resources for SUU students, faculty, and community members.

Outdoor Engagement Center

Director: Briget EastepWebsite: https://www.suu.edu/siel/outdoor/

Vision Statement

The Outdoor Engagement Center will be an active hub supporting and creating meaningful interdisciplinary learning opportunities to involve the university’s community in the outdoors.  Participants will enhance their knowledge and awareness of the natural, cultural, and historic resources on public lands while gaining life- long skills, a sense of place, and appreciation for stewardship of our natural world.  Through our work, SUU will gain national attention for engaging students, faculty, and staff in the outdoors.

Projects

Professor Anne Smith (Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism) and Dr. Johnny MacLean (Geology), with Dr. Anne Diekema (Library), Dr. Kelly Goonan (ORPT), Dr. Jackie Grant (Biology) and Dr. John Smith (Communications) participated in the first Semester in the Parks program, at Bryce Canyon National Park and Ruby’s Inn Resort, Fall 2016. Twelve students enrolled in six SUU courses offered at Bryce Canyon National Park.  Students lived and worked at Ruby’s Inn Resort, and faculty commuted each week to teach their courses.  Courses were tailored to the outdoor setting of Bryce Canyon, and the group took multiple excursions to other southwestern national parks, including Cedar Breaks, Capitol Reef, Great Basin, Zion, Pipe Springs, and Grand Canyon. It was designed to immerse students in the National Parks, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service and to continue to build Southern Utah University’s status as “University of the Parks.”

Every other weekend the group traveled to different national and state parks in Utah, Nevada and Arizona. The group began with a four-day river trip on the San Juan River in the recently designated Bear’s Ears National Monument and culminated with a four-day trip to Grand Canyon National Park.

The program’s success hinged on critical partnerships with Ruby’s Inn and the public lands. Ruby’s Inn offered students housing and employment, which helped keep the program affordable and gave the students real world experience with the tourism business. Bryce

Canyon National Park offered a classroom near the canyon rim in the original park visitor center and interaction with park staff and visitors. Bryce Canyon Natural History Association provided special access and training sessions. Other parks provided access to park rangers and special programs.

Students were immersed in national park course material, experienced the parks and their operations first-hand and reported that it was a transformative experience. One student said, “The Semester in the Parks program was an adventure of a lifetime! The experiences and lessons I learned within these ‘universities without walls’ will stay with me for as long as I live.” This served as a semester-long immersion experience similar to study abroad programs, and it highlighted SUU’s partnerships with local businesses and land management agencies.  It was (and continues to be) a wonderful example of SUU’s claim as the University of the Parks.

In 2015, the OEC partnered with James E. Pollard to unite his research with undergraduate research and faculty opportunities.   In the past year, our research program has grown creating unique learning opportunities.

Collaboration was initiated with Dr. Shalini Kesar with her Spring Capstone class.  Seventeen students were engaged in direct research testing as the main focus for their Capstone projects.   Results of the student projects were incorporated into Mr. Pollard’s research-reporting to the Forest Service.  Plans were made to continue collaboration with Dr. Kesar in providing student project material for her spring, 2017 Capstone class.

James Pollard and Dr. Shalini Kesar (CSIS) will present “Designing and Teaching Computing Capstone Class: A Case Study Involving Forest Service Project” at the 2017 CEPE/ETHICOMP conference in Turin, Italy, in June 2017.  Additionally, they have been asked to submit the full article for publication to the society proceedings and Journal, later in 2017.

Jayci Bash, Dr. Johnny MacLean (Physical Science), Dr. Kyle Bishop (Director, Honors), Dr. Matt Weeg (Biology), Professor Matt Nickerson (Library), and Jason Kaiser (Physical Science) led Partners in the Park programs in Cedar Breaks National Monument, Zion National Park, and Glacier National Park during Summer 2016. Partners in the Parks helped commemorate the 100th anniversary of the NPS by taking over 30 honors students from across the country into some of our nation’s most treasured places. During these outdoor experiential learning projects, students engage responsibly in the park, seminar with park officials and professors, provide service to the park, and gain a life-long appreciation for our public spaces. This year was also the 10th anniversary of SUU directing projects in the intermountain west.

At the start of fall semester, Dr. Kyle Bishop (director) also organized a trip to Great Basin National Park to tour the Lehman Caves as a part of SUU Day in the Park, August 25.

Undergraduate Research & Scholarship Program (UGRASP)

With national participation in undergraduate research reaching an all-time high, SUU is taking a leadership role by including research as a major emphasis in its new academic roadmap. The Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Program (UGRASP) seeks to support, advocate for, and assist students engaging in research and scholarship activities.

Perhaps the most direct contribution of UGRASP is to provide funding for undergraduate research and scholarship conduction and dissemination. Grant awards of up to $500 are available to students from all disciplines across campus.

Another highlight of the yearly activities of UGRASP includes the annual Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research (UCUR) in the spring. Based off the prestigious National Conference on Undergraduate Research, UCUR is a statewide conference dedicated to the dissemination of student research and creative activity.  UGRASP covers all expenses for students who present at this conference. In February 2017, Utah Valley University served as the host institution.

Brandon Street (Director, Career & Professional Development Center) and Donna Law (Executive Director, The Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics & Public Service) organized “The Professional Closet” in the Sharwan Smith Center, January 27, 2017. They noticed that often when they spoke with students regarding professional dress standards for interviews, internships, professional gatherings, etc. that some students would express a concern regarding the clothes they own. Based on this ongoing concern, and the financial limitations of most students, they decided to create the Professional Closet. Street and Law collected professional attire from individuals both on- and off-campus, found a location in the Sharwan Smith Center, created a student committee and watched our dream become a reality. On January 27, 2017 we held an open house for the Professional Closet which was featured on ABC 4 News (http://www.good4utah.com/news/local-news/suu-helps-students-dress-for-success/646432113) and other local news sources. The organizers hope that the Professional Closet will help students feel confident in the way they present themselves so they can focus on whatever task is at hand and, perhaps, land the job of their dreams.

SUU Care and Support Team (CAST), led by co-chairs Jayci Bash (Honors) and Dr. Johnny MacLean (Physical Science) have organized an ongoing program to build community at SUU. The The SUU Care and Support Team (CAST) promotes student resiliency by providing a visible network of trained faculty and staff who are committed to students who may be struggling with emotional distress and mental health issues.  CAST offers trainings to faculty and staff that build understanding in listening and helping skills, Title IX, and suicide prevention.  It also hosts reading groups that allow employees to discuss pertinent topics surrounding our students’ emotional health and to build an open and vibrant community.  Finally, CAST partners with other helping groups on campus to organize special events to show students they’re supported such as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week.
