AT A TIME OF REVOLUTION WHERE THE SENSE

OF SELF IDENTITY IS MERGED TO A UNIFIED RELIGIOUS MOVEMENT,

THE INSPIRATION FOR THE STYLING IN THIS PHOTO SHOOT EMERGES. REFLECTIVE OF THE STORIES OF THOSE GROWING UP IN THIS TIME, THE

URGENCY OF SELF-IDENTITY AND KNOWING ONES CULTURE WITH ONES

FAITH WAS VERY EVIDENT. THESE RELIGIOUS BARRIERS MASKED ALL OF THE COMMON & STEREOTYPICAL LABELS OF PREPPY, ROCKER, MOD, AND THE LIKES. WANTING TO CAPTURE THE SELF-

PROCLAIMED, GOLD OBSESSED, ROCKER BABE THAT WAS THE

PERSONA OF A ONCE YOUNG PERSIAN GIRL, CAME THIS LOOK.

For the hair and makeup treatments I wanted to focus on the beauty of the angst. The hair was kept in its natural form and only pinned back to fall within the guidelines of the laws within Iran. Only a little bit can show, and I felt it needed to be left natural and wild to represent her personality and her situation; there’s only a little that can ever be shown. For her makeup, the emphasis on her eyes with the smoky shadows were inspired by the ramones and the likes of punk bands, where dark make-up became a reflection of their pain. Her lips were only accentuated and cheeks rosy to compliment the gold headpiece. All inspired by the gaudiness of the middle eastern culture and their obsession with gold.

There is no greater sense of feeling than that of freedom and the ability to be carefree of any barriers and of any expectations. There are rare moments in our lives where we are able to experience such a euphoric feeling. I chose an all white ensemble to represent the innocence that is lost in generations today. The gold accents act symbolic of nature and the sun. Even though she is just dancing in a room, she is reflective of being one with her nature and one with herself.

For the hair and make-up treatments, I wanted to

maintain a very simple image. I wanted to

accentuate her natural beauty and by pulling her

hair back into a high ponytail, the emphasis can

remain on her facial structure. The softness

that I find in artists like Taylor Swift and Victoria

Justice were a huge inspiration for the

overall look. Alexis has an absolutely adorable and

rejuvenating personality, and this look couldn’t

have worked with anyone else but her.

Thank You…

My gratitude to Tyler Udall for the experience to understand the styling process and for introducing a new found love within myself. To Andrew Volk for sharing

his time with us students to gain experience working with a professional photographer. And a huge thank you to my beautiful models, my extremely

talented hair and make-up stylists for their contributions and to Bonnie Phan and Sholeh Shahbazi for letting me raid their personal accessories.
