REAL ADVENTURES ...
Every winter the Tyrolean diving instructor
Dieter Kuchling guides guests at the Hotel
Mohr Life Resort not on but under the ice for
ice diving in the hotel’s own Blindsee lake at
an altitude of 1,103 metres. Ice diving means
diving into a breathtaking underwater lands-
cape, which is considered to be highly dan-
gerous though. Technology is more likely to
fail in cold water than in a warm sea, despite
the dry suit the cold attacks the human phy-
sique and you can only reach surface where
a hole has already been made in the ice cover.
Diving and specifically ice diving is therefore
A FORAY THROUGH THE ADVENTURES OF THE ALPINE REGIONS FAR AWAY FROM
THE GROOMED SLOPES.
/ ALPINE ADVENTURES /
only for people who can prove they have
the suitable qualifications and fitness levels
and have the right equipment. And a diving
professional like Kuchling, who protects his
protégés from possible hazards.
But it doesn’t have to be ice diving. “In an
otherwise largely civilised society geared
towards predictability and minimisation of
risks, adventures stand for a wild and inten-
sive life far removed from the routine of ev-
eryday life”, writes the German sports
sociologist Karl-Heinz Bette. The alpine
tourist regions offer a great opportunity to
have “primary physical experiences” and
collect “extraordinary sensory impressi-
ons” (Bette). Skiing by moonlight or on
untouched slopes in the early hours of the
morning, as are possible on the Matterhorn
(see page 5 “Adventure right up the top”),
set you apart from the crowds who are
still dreaming of adventures in comfortable
hotel rooms (for example at Hotel Firefly or
Matterhorn Focus) in Zermatt.

ADVENTURE RIGHT UP THE TOP
3,883 metres. The Matterhorn glacier
paradise is even an adventure in itself
if you just want to conventionally carve.
Winter sports enthusiasts can’t get up
as high in any other skiing area in the
Alps. The highest situated skiing area
also includes the highest situated cable
car and the highest situated top stati-
on. That’s not enough? No problem, the
peak lift leads to the viewing platform with
a 360° panorama over 38 alpine peaks.
A visit to the fascinating glacier palace
makes it an unforgettable experience once
and for all.
Skiing does not end when it gets dark.
On eight nights, from 25 December to 25
March, a special treat awaits night owls
/ ZERMATT CABLE CARS /
when the light of the full moon illuminates the
slopes. Protected by the prudent ski patrol
you can glide down the slopes in the re-
freshing night air and have your breath taken
away by the fascinating mountain panorama.
Anyone who prefers making their tracks in
freshly prepared snow in the early morning
should choose the “first track”. After the
accompanied downhill run, a sumptuous
breakfast buffet entices you to the Matter-
horn glacier paradise restaurant.
Other highlights: a freeride run in untouched
but secured terrain, heli-skiing, trip on a piste
basher while preparing the slopes at night
and a speedy sledge ride after a traditional
fondue or Valais platter with ham, sausage
and cheese. Delicious “Fendant”, as the
ADVENTURE IS A SURE THING IN THE ALPS’ HIGHEST
SITUATED SKIING AREA. AND SAFE.

Chasselas wine is called in Valais, is only
served after you’ve got to the bottom. Then
it’s best to choose the Johannisberg, locals
order “a glass of Johann”.
Oh yes: the new Skiguide app for smart-
phone is also recommended so that you
always know what’s what. This also works
so well because all the Zermatt cable car
stations are being equipped with free WiFi
from winter 2015/2016. STOP

“Higher, further, more extreme!” – more
and more providers are catering to this
trend. However, it must be the “safe experi-
encing of adventures”, as the German daily
newspaper DIE WELT writes. Injuries while
skiing have in fact dropped by 58 percent
over the last three decades, according to a
study by the German sports scientist David
Schulz. This fact cannot however eradica-
te tragedies like that of German Formula
1 World Champion Michael Schumacher,
who still (and maybe forever) requires in-
tensive support and care after his serious
skiing accident in Méribel in December
2013. Reasons for the reduced risk are
increasingly better groomed and secured
slopes and better equipment. And there’s
Otto too. As a host at Hotel Alpin Juwel in
Saalbach-Hinterglemm he takes snowshoe
tourists on tours out into unspoilt nature.
The Alfa Hotel in Tyrol’s Serfaus not only
offers leisurely tours “on a beautiful day in
alpine sunshine”, but also daring climbs
– safety tips are available from reception
though and every adventurer is urged to
take them to heart too.
The highest form of snowboarding is free-
riding in untouched terrain. Hotels like
Lederer’s Living attract guests to the ski-
ing region of Kaprun with these kinds of
opportunities. But “no risk – no fun” also
includes “safety first”: extensive advice and
explanations about alpine hazards com-
bined with an appeal to accept personal
responsibility have been available at the
Freeride Info Base on the Kitzsteinhorn for
six years now. “A modern information sys-
tem that was developed by a team of local
experts helps freeriders to start out into the
backcountry well prepared”, states the re-
assuring advertising for adventure. We are
assured that naturally the freeride routes
are well marked, like the hiking routes in
the summer, but they “are not prepared of
course”. That would probably be too much
of a good thing. The Alpslodge in Fiss in
Tyrol already hints at adventure in its name:
“Lodge” is the word for secluded accom-
modation for mountain sports, outdoor
adventures or hunting. “Adventure Night
with night skiing” and a “Show in a class of
its own” take place here every Wednesday
during the winter season. Nobody has to
fear not being able to find his way back to
the hotel afterwards as the cable cars also
run at night.
Adventures are of course also on offer in
one of Austria’s most famous skiing regi-
ons, the Arlberg, where we recommend
the Anthony’s Life & Style Hotel in the town
that gave it its name, St. Anton. Off-piste
the buzzword is randonnée skiing (the spe-
cial ski binding opens at the back for wal-
king and is fixed for skiing downhill). Any-
one who wants to go up a bit higher, uses
the helicopter to get to the top and anyone
who cannot decide, opts for all-mountain
skiing in all conditions – from well groo-
med slopes to totally untouched off-piste
terrain. For this you need the SUV among
skis of course, which are up for absolutely
anything.
We don’t know where the journey will take
us but it shouldn’t end for a long time yet.
“The extreme has become a social trend”,
analyses the sports psychologist Martin
Kopp from Innsbruck, “if recreational cul-
ture continues to develop in this way, the
types of sports will become even more ex-
treme in future”.
But Otto will continue to make sure you
are safe. Although Otto could of course be
Manuela. The vast spa complexes at com-
fortable hotels provide relaxation after your
adrenaline rush. STOP

/ EAST TYROL /
WINTER. WILD. ROMANTIC.
WHAT DO 266 THREE THOUSAND METRE PEAKS DO TO A LANDSCAPE? THEY
SET IT APART, FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD AND ITS BUSY LIFESTYLE.
THEY RAISE IT ABOVE EVERYTHING, ABOVE THE SLIGHTLY LOWER ALPINE
ALPS. AND THEY INTEGRATE INTO IT, IN THE CASE OF EAST TYROL BREATH-
TAKINGLY, INCREDIBLY, SPECTACULARLY. IN THE TRUEST SENSE OF THE
WORD WILD ... ROMANTIC!
There is no question, many regions
claim to be unique, spectacular,
stunning and whatever and maybe
some are in one or two aspects any-
way – if you’re lucky. And then there’s
East Tyrol – especially in the winter:
WOWWWW! East Tyrol is small and
yet is divided into four regions: in the
north lies the Hohe Tauern national
park and the Defreggen Valley, in the
south east the Lienz Dolomites and
the Hochpustertal in the south west.
So geographical, so banal. But actually
it’s these MOUNTAINS in fact that force
geography into its breathtaking form,
it’s these MOUNTAINS that produce
this WOWWW effect in the summer and
especially in the winter. Anyone who has
ever skied over the slopes in the Kals-
Matrei Großglockner ski resort knows
that impressive is an understatement.
East Tyrol is nature in its most humong-
ous form, jam-packed in a relatively small
space: authentic, original, genuine, redu-
ced to what is necessary, what is essen-
tial. MOUNTAINS.
Really quiet & really steep!
Perhaps we should begin our tour at the
quietest spot, the Villgratental valley as it
shows off the minimalism best: The peop-
le of Villgraten would be worthy candida-
tes for the Nobel Prize for Ecology. And in
fact whole generations of them. When the
ski boom really took off in the Alps, in the
1980s, they did not join in. And they still
maintain this “passive resistance” today.
Sounds “Nobel”, well it is too. As the peop-
le of Villgraten have turned down grandeur,
quantity and sales so that their valley re-
mains not just any old valley but one that is
surrounded by amazingly beautiful moun-
tains without any “ski circus”. This means:
metres of snow, naturally totally naturally,
no massive crowded slopes – quite sim-
ply untouched high alpine nature in its very
purest form. And what can you do there
except be amazed and breathe a sigh of
relief? You can be amazed, breathe a sigh
of relief, stomp and swish – in short: Go on
the very finest tours and ski mountaineer-
ing adventures. They alternate between
moderate and hard levels of difficulty – the
people of Villgraten are happy to take in-
experienced guests under their wings, for
example at the mountain school. However,
Villgraten is also a hotspot for experienced
winter mountain freaks of course as ev-
erything in the valley is clearly laid out and
familiar suitable groups are also quickly for-
med. Anyone who is less into Nordic and
more into classic alpine or freestyle should
maybe choose the Silian-Hochpustertal
skiing area, where there are endless slopes
from which you can wave back to the roots
of nature lovers in Villgraten. East Tyrol
boasts more than 150 kilometres of dream
slopes in total by the way, from the World
Cup suitable Zettersfeld/Hochstein Lienz to
the very family friendly St. Jakob, Golzen-
tipp and Prägraten-Virgen areas, the latter
on the wonderful Großvenediger. Begin-
ners should maybe choose the small and
stunning Kartitisch. STOP

Ski tours as a festivalYou can also turn ski tours into a festival: As
the East Tyrolean capital of Lienz does from
11 to 13 December 2015. All ski fans are
catered for, from downhillers to freeriders
and high-alpine ski tour freaks. Films, talks
and workshops (e.g. by the ski tour cen-
tre of excellence at Hochstein), a trade fair
with the latest trends, and the option to try
out the most stunning routes with East Ty-
rolean mountain and ski guides, are all on
the programme. It is just as likely for you to
come across alpine and ski sports legends
like Reinhold Messner, Charly Gabl (the
weatherman for Himalaya expeditions but
that’s not all) there as it is for freerider aces
Samuel Anthamatten or Sandra Lahnstei-
ner to cross your path.
Trans-Dolomiti – but very comfortably!East Tyrol is also popular with people who
like cross-country skiing preferring long dis-
tances and less incline: For example, when
you do the “Trans-Dolomiti”. The Trans-Do-
lomiti is a package that links the hotspots
in the network of trails between East Tyrol
and the Dolomites. There are roughly 200
kilometres from start to finish. At the end of
every day your luggage is already waiting in
your hotel room for you. The only thing you
have to do yourself is skiing. “The guests
can look forward to a new highlight every
day”, explains Otto Trauner, team leader of
the Hochpustertal region, who started up
the cross-border project together with Do-
lomiti Nordicski. Even skiing onto the bor-
der area trail in Lesachtal is legendary: It is
considered to be one of the most beautiful
and variety-packed trails in the southern
Alps. It continues over the Pustertal trails
into South Tyrol’s Toblach. At the end the
route leads past the “Three Peaks” through
the UNESCO World Heritage Site as far as
the Olympic venue of Cortina d’Ampezzo.
If the 200 Trans-Dolomiti kilometres are not
enough for you: There are 400 kilometres
of luxury trails in total in East Tyrol, which
should deal with even the most extreme
lack of exercise.
Between chamois and ibexSnowshoe tours with rangers from the
Hohe Tauern national park are shorter but
also unbelievably beautiful: “We overcome
250 metres difference in altitude at the
most and enjoy lots of breaks to observe
game and birds of prey with a spotting
scope and binoculars,” reassures ranger
Andreas Angermann. To warm up there’s
the “Pregler” in East Tyrol. The “father of all
schnapps” has been distilled out of apples
and pears for as long as you can remem-
ber here. A detour to Gottfried Steiner, the
Tyrolean Gourmet Restaurateur 2011, who
runs the restaurant on the Großvenediger
in Prägraten, is also highly recommended.
Whether it’s ragout made from Tyrolean
mountain lamb, chamois goulash or boiled
beef on creamed spinach with apple hor-
seradish, he almost exclusively uses re-
gional products. However, according to
Steiner the actual recipe for success is “the
love that you can sense on the plate”. The
highlight during Advent in Lienz from 3 to
5 December are the Lienz Krampus runs,
which are less loving but certainly not dan-
gerous. The Advent market in Lienz, which
is one of the most traditional throughout
Austria and has the motto “Be a child once
again”, brings original Tyrolean customs
to life again from 27 November to 24 De-
cember. Singers and storytellers perform in
front of the town hall, which is transformed
into a giant advent calendar. Readings and
pastoral plays are just as impressive as the
“living workshops”, where glass blowers,
candle makers and wood carvers invite
you to join in while children sweat in the
children’s bakehouse. STOP

HOTELS IN EUROPE IS SITUATED RIGHT NEXT TO EAST TYROL’S LARGEST SKIING AREA, THE GROSSGLOCKNER RE-
SORT KALS-MATREI. THE GRADONNA****S MOUNTAIN RESORT CHÂLETS & HOTEL NOT ONLY STANDS OUT DUE TO
ITS EXCLUSIVE LOCATION BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF ITS SUPERB ARCHITECTURE. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL ...
OF THE 100 MOST BEAUTIFUL
The Großglockner resort Kals-Matrei, on
the southern side of the “Glockner”, is East
Tyrol’s largest skiing area. The four-star su-
perior resort that allows for a totally new kind
of skiing holiday is situated at 1,350 metres
altitude, right next to the Blauspitz downhill
run to Kals.
The Gradonna****s Mountain Resort Châ-
lets & Hotel is laid out like a modern moun-
tain village. The hotel offers 105 rooms and
12 tower suites as well as an approx. 3,000
m² spa complex. 41 châlets for four to eight
people with a spacious living room and small
wellness area and sun terraces are scatte-
red around the hotel. All the buildings were
built out of solid wood from local forests. In
the resort there is a sports shop and ski hire,
a ski school and ski pass service, a free be-
ginners’ nursery slope, a cross-country trail
and direct link to East Tyrol’s largest skiing
area. Thanks to the delicatessen shop with
products from regional farmers, châlet resi-
dents can self cater or book half-board at
the hotel, upon request, which is of course
also based on regional products.
A new quality standard
You can click on your bindings right in front
of the hotel or châlet door and after a quick
schuss down to the bottom station in Kals,
15 modern cable cars and lifts take old and
young snow acrobats up to an altitude of
2,500 metres where snow is guaranteed.
You can find open slopes without any
trees under the Cimaross peak as well as
knee-deep freeriding terrain and fun parks.
Downhill skiers start their fitness test on
East Tyrol’s longest downhill run to Matrei or
on the exclusive carver slope and downhill
run to Kals. Just before the bottom station
you can then swerve off and take a pit stop
at your new holiday home. In the hotel the
3,000 m² large spa, the largest wellness
complex in East Tyrol by the way, builds up
your fitness for the next day’s skiing. Child-
ren can also benefit from the same in the
wellness area: They have their own pool with
slide as well as a family sauna and steam
bath. Adults and young people aged 15 and
above also have their own indoor pool. Ath-
letes can work out in the fitness centre with
mountain views, in the gym, meditation and
yoga room or reach for the stars in the boul-
der and climbing room. In terms of beauty
and relaxation, the Gradonna****s spa relies
on the power of the Alps: The Tyrolean Al-
pienne product range stands for beneficial
massages with St. John’s wort, arnica, mar-
mot oil, honey or Swiss stone pine. Vinoble
is a beauty range from Styria, which is based
on the anti-oxidative, re-mineralising and
moisturising active ingredients of organic
substances. Babor also works with natural
and luxury cosmetics based on edelweiss,
glacier water or meadowfoam seed oil.
First-class dining
The Gradonna also easily maintains its po-
sition in the premium league in terms of di-
ning: Whether you’re a hotel guest or châlet
self-caterer, Michael Karl cooks first-class
cuisine for guests in the restaurant. It’s no
surprise that Karl has already been awarded
4 toques during the course of his career. His
cooking is modern and light – East Tyrolean
specialities and Mediterranean influences
are fused with Asian ingredients. All the re-
cipes are reinterpreted. A true explosion for
the senses awaits you with a great love of
details and natural products. The wine cel-
lar stocks fine wines from all over the world,
qualified sommeliers take you through the
huge choice and if you fancy a cigar the
same awaits cigar fans perfectly stored in
the cigar lounge. STOP

ON SKI SAFARI WITH THE POWDER SNOW CHAMPION
Draw the first line on a slope covered in
deep powder snow for once, on the sunny
white surrounded by impressive rock for-
mations. Passionate freeriders who harbour
these kinds of dreams are in just the right
place at the Bergland Hotel Sölden. As the
hotel’s boss, Sigi Grüner, is not just a three
times synchronized skiing world champion
but also a five times powder snow world
champion. He knows every single downhill
slope in the surrounding area, in fact you
could say every single flake. “I am also hap-
py to share this knowledge with my guests
with a welcome cocktail on Sunday or on
the slope,” emphasises Grüner.
Once a week the Bergland Hotel offers its
guests a ski safari, led by the boss and/
or other Bergland guides. Not only are the
peaks named and mountain inns visited
but anyone who has completed a ski sa-
fari knows more about the different types
of snow afterwards than ever before. The
route leads over the entire region from the
gentle Giggijoch to the challenging Gais-
lachkogel, where the region’s greatest
challenge awaits skiers: the “Krumpe Rin-

“I did it” T-shirt as a souvenir at the hotel
– although they will probably remember it
all their life anyway.
Waterfalls and wild hares
However, you don’t have to tackle the
“Krumpe Rinne” straight away as there is
something for every taste and every fitness
level among the alpine sports opportuni-
ties that can be reached from the Bergland
Hotel Sölden: leisurely skiing and cross-
country skiing, curling, night skiing under a
starry sky, ice climbing on frozen waterfalls
in nearby Umhausen or boarding in the Söl-
den snow park, which entices you with jibs,
jumps, rails and tubes. Guests who prefer
approaching things very calmly can borrow
Swarovski binoculars from the Bergland
Hotel Sölden and start their day on holiday
with a (snowshoe) hike along the “quiet side
of Sölden”. With a bit of luck and patience
you will catch a glimpse of deer and wild
hares.
The winter mountain breakfast is a high-
light for both adventurous and leisurely
holidaymakers. After indulging yourself in
the morning with the hotel’s own sheep’s
milk yoghurt, Kaiserschmarrn and other
delicacies you can either head for skiing
fun or back to the hotel on snowshoes to a
relaxing crime novel, a yoga lesson or the
Sky Spa.
Warmth from all elements
As regardless of whether you are returning
from extreme sports or more gentle winter
fun, the most wonderful place to warm up
at the Bergland Hotel Sölden is in the Sky
Spa with its incredible panoramic view over
the Nederkogel, Sölden’s stone landmark.
Gentle warmth seeps out of all elements:

from the outdoor whirlpool, from the Fin-
nish or bio sauna’s air and from the rock
material of the heated stone loungers.
Anyone who wants to have their body
pampered can trust in the hotel’s own
“Natural Alpine” beauty range, whose
ingredients all come from within a radius of
40 kilometres at the most.
You can then dream superbly of powder
snow, of the sauna’s chocolate fragrance ...
or of a summer holiday at the Bergland
Hotel Sölden afterwards on the hay beds in
the “Raum der Stille”. STOP
Experience adventure on the slopes and in deep powder snow with hotel owner Sigi Grüner or warm up in the Sky Spa with views over the snowy mountains and let us pamper your body with fragrances and touch: The Bergland Hotel Sölden offers holiday fun for both adventurous and leisurely holidaymakers.
/ GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN /
GRASECK, THE SOLITARY HIGHLIGHT ABOVE GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN,
COMBINES A HOTEL AND PREVENTIVE MEDICINE CENTRE UNDER ONE ROOF.
LEAVE STRESS IN THE VALLEY
The hotel’s own gondola soars over snowy
forests, Garmisch-Partenkirchen becomes
a dot on the landscape and at 900 metres
above sea level surrounded by a nature re-
serve calm is restored. The first expedition
to the Zugspitze set off from here in 1851,
today the hotel offers advanced medicine to
support personal health and fitness levels.
A team of medical specialists, all based in the
region, provide a full body check in a holiday
atmosphere in the hotel’s own GAP PRE-
VENT prevention centre. Anyone who wants
to can complete all the medical screenings
in one place, with just one comprehensive
final consultation or have a sports medicine
performance test carried out. “There is not a
hospital or doctor’s surgery atmosphere here,
the screenings are harmoniously integrated
into your holiday”, explains Sylvia Weingart, the
hotel’s Medical Director. The team of doctors
supports the guest who always specifies the
direction of the medical screenings themselves.
Health through indulgence
The hotel and prevention centre are mana-
ged separately but also intricately interwo-
ven based on the motto “Health through
indulgence”. The harmony of these two
aspects is not only evident during an anti-
stress massage in the hotel’s own SPA but
also in the exquisite dining: fresh fish from
the nearby trout farm or a carpaccio of veal
from Werdenfels young bulls, sprinkled with
native olive oil – this sounds like a feast
even though what’s on your plate is totally
healthy. Even the spices used in the Gras-
eck kitchen not only taste delicious but are
also healing. For example, a hint of chilli
gently stimulates the circulation while garlic
ensures healthy veins. Anyone who would
prefer to indulge in hearty Bavarian food will
also find something appropriate on offer; ir-
respective of their cholesterol levels. As top
priority is given to voluntariness at Graseck,
stress is left in the valley. STOP
Stylemate: Your concept recently won the
Bavarian Start-Up Award 2015. What is so
innovative about Graseck?
Sylvia Weingart: What is unique are the
independently and therefore professionally
run medicine and hotel areas: The preven-
tive guest can rely on an interdisciplinary,
highly qualified team of medical specialists,
who carry out medical diagnosis based on
current scientific standards, upon request.
The aim is to also inspire guests who are
not primarily coming for health care to have
a medical check up – also and especially
on holiday.
Stylemate: Which medical priorities does
your team focus on?
Sylvia Weingart: One focus is on pre-
venting cancer and cardiovascular/cir-
culation diseases. We are also not afraid of
AWARD-WINNING INNOVATIONINTERVIEW WITH DR. SYLVIA WEINGART,
MEDICAL DIRECTOR AT GRASECK
broaching unpopular topics such as colon
cancer prevention and offer endoscopic
examinations with a team of experienced
doctors and assistants on site. We also have
urologists, dermatologists, orthopaedists,
gynaecologists and dentists in the team for
prevention. The second focus is on what we
offer ambitious athletes. With sporty active
people, even young people, it is important
to rule out a latent heart disease. Besides
this we offer performance diagnostics and
the compilation of a training plan to improve
endurance.
Stylemate: How much time should guests
at Graseck schedule in for your prevention
screenings and how far in advance should
they book a check up?
Sylvia Weingart: The scope of the re-
commended check up depends on the
individual’s risk profile – we are happy
to determine this by phone beforehand.
Some guests want to complete the screen-
ings in as short a time as possible, others
schedule in at least a week for this to also
have enough time to enjoy their holiday.
A stay of at least three days is recommen-
ded, we also offer day check ups.
A minimum stay of one week applies to
specific issues though, for example, our
programmes specially developed on a
scientific basis for quitting smoking or
managing stress. STOP

The Zugspitze is not just Germany’s high-
est mountain. It is also incredibly beautiful
and is therefore a magical backdrop for the
whole hotel: The Alps are always fantastic
in the winter. But having this sensational
mountain right in front of your eyes, be it
from the rooms or suites, while practising
yoga, working out, in the spa and of course
in the restaurant, makes this hotel a real
highlight – that’s the special quality of the
MOHR life resort in Lermoos, Tyrol, which
is obvious to anyone. This magical view
over the snow-covered Zugspitze with
just an untouched natural winter land-
scape between hotel and mountain is
simply unique and spectacular.
Contrast & intensity
However, what also contributes to the
special charm of the MOHR life resort of
course is the quality of the architecture:
For example, the massive glass front in the
spa with indoor pool practically brings the
gigantic neighbouring mountain into the
water. Or to the table in the restaurant –
that is why the hotel’s motto is also totally
genuine: “Contrasting elements for an in-
tensive sense of vitality.” Natural materials

such as wood and natural stone shine in warm
red and rust tones: A touch of the Orient pays
homage to the Moors in the hotel’s name and
is also a guarantee for an intensive sense of
vitality in contrast to alpine nature.
However, the latter is not only thanks to the
qualities that guests find in the hotel but is also
the result of the many activities, which the ho-
tel is the perfect starting point for: For examp-
le, experienced divers can also do ice diving at
the MOHR life resort in the hotel’s own lakes
and that means totally in private! Anyone who
is not quite as much into extreme sports can
ice skate on the hotel terrace – the Zugspitze
is always present and watching (probably in all
serenity). Winter hikes and cross-country ski-
ing tours from right on the hotel’s doorstep are
also highly recommended. Naturally there’s
also alpine skiing fun, the lift to the skiing area
is just a few metres away. Horse lovers among
the hotel’s guests should contemplate exclusi-
ve Western riding lessons on superbly trained
American Quarter horses: Small groups of 3
people maximum (and the horses of course)
are available, as well as private lessons on the
lunge line or hacks out into this unbelievably
beautiful winter countryside – wherever the
mood takes you and whatever your ability, you
are sure to find the right thing on offer.
Pampered from head to toe
Fresh mountain air, whether it be after a lot or
even not very much exercise, definitely gives
you an appetite. The MOHR gourmet board
satisfies this with a sumptuous breakfast buf-
fet, afternoon snack and evening 5-course
menu (three main courses and one fish dish
to choose from every day). It goes without
saying that there is always superb game from
the region, especially during the cold months.
So that it is not just your taste buds that are
happy but your whole body, the MOHR life
resort also offers wellness treatments and in
fact Ayurvedic, as well as beauty and sen-
sual treatments ranging from alpha light and

A TWELVE-PERSON TEAM IN THE SURSELVA REGION PRODUCES THE WORLD’S ONLY SKI WITH A STONE
CORE: THE ZAI SPADA. DESPITE THE UNUSUAL CORE, IT ENABLES A FEELING OF SKIING THAT IS AS LIGHT
AS A FEATHER.
/ ZAI SKI /
SKI ARTISTRY BETWEEN CRAFT AND HIGH TECH
“I used to ski. Since I used zai, I fly.” This is
how film star Antonio Banderas describes
his experiences with a globally unique ski
brand: zai. The company name says it all: in
Sursilvan dialect, a form of Rhaeto-Romanic
spoken in the Grischun canton of Switzer-
land where zai skis are made, it means as
much as “tough”. Zai stands for stability and
conviction. In defiance of all fashion trends
and economic shocks, a hand-picked team
of twelve people has produced zai skis in
Disentis, in the Surselva region since 2003
– for a rapidly growing, but likewise hand-
picked clientele. The skis are characterised
by innovative materials such as Swiss gra-
nite that is fifty million years old, but also by
their precise finish, which combines crafts-
manship with high tech. Work is performed
at 1,130 metres above sea level – between
a monastery and a ski slope – on one of
only seven CNC ski presses in the world,
which can also correct uneven surfaces of
only 0.01 millimetre. But at zai, which was
established by ski designer Simon Jacomet
in his hometown, workers also still rely on
the sensitivity of the bare hand.
Focus on the essentials
Founder and chief designer Jacomet was a
confident skier as early as age three, and
later worked as a ski instructor – but prima-
rily to finance his art studies in Florence. He
succeeded in combining art and ski design
so that top achievements in both discipli-
nes resulted. But a genuine zai ski clearly
stands out from conventional luxury brands:
the materials utilised do not flaunt wealth,
but impress with a puristically simple look
that features sophisticated functionality. The
aesthetic concept behind this: focus on the
essentials. “A ski from zai consists of ev-
erything that a good ski needs, and nothing
else”, is Jacomet’s credo. Zai skis are hand-
crafted from the very finest materials, in-
cluding wood, stone and patented carbon
fibres. So they lose just 5% tension after 100
days of use, compared to 25% over 30 days
for mass-produced skis.
The ski looks classy, but never ostentatious.
It is said that the chief designer did not even
want to see a logo on the ski during the birth
of zai. Even if the company logo is on the
ski now, the aesthetic pleasure is dominated
by clear lines in deliberate colouring. Behind
the appealing visual appearance of many
zai skis is a top surface made of cellulose
acetate, an innovation just as great as the
stone core that constitutes the heart of the
collection’s flagship ski, the zai spada. 2016
will see the 10th anniversary of this model:
essentially unchanged, but consistently
optimised towards perfection.
Unique specimens of nature
Due to the natural properties of cellulose
acetate, a type of individual speckle pattern
is created on the surface of the ski – and so
every ski is a unique specimen. The pattern
is embedded deep into the material, so the
colour is scratchproof and the unmistak-
able design is preserved for countless years.
Due to the specialist nature of the materials,
ski servicing is best done directly at the zai
factory or by selected zai dealerships
around the world. But a factory visit is also
worthwhile for zai newcomers. Transpa-
rency is part of the corporate philosophy.
That is why the doors are open every day.
Guided tours for groups – and also ski cons-
truction workshops where people can even
lend a hand themselves – are available by
appointment. You can only be more active
yourself when skiing! STOP

R BY FLORENTINA WELLEY
FLORENTINA WELLEY
TO SEE: KAPUTT CRYSTAL A mannequin in a wheelchair? A glance under Marilyn Monroe’s high-flying dress in her legendary pose? Models dressed with nothing but crystal and tattoos? Of course, this can only be the hallmark of the fashion scene’s enfant terrible Jean Paul Gaultier! Now the designer is staging his unique creations at Swarovski in Vienna and Innsbruck to render beautiful glittering experiences. And on the side he also desig-ned a limited edition jewellery line: Kaputt (broken) crystal. “Nothing less than a love story connects me with Swarovski. I almost have the feeling that we have already brought children into the world, and that even more are on the way”, says Gaultier. The exhibition entitled “Jean Paul Gaultier. From the sidewalk to the catwalk” at the art gal-lery Kunsthalle of Hypo-Kulturstiftung in Munich, which Swarovski supports as a premium partner, also provides a retrospective of his fashion work. A glance at haute couture creations of recent seasons awaits visitors at the shop in Innsbruck. The displayed models perfectly place the material crystal in the limelight. The low room enhances the dramatic staging of models.www.swarovski.com

/ MERRY CHRISTMAS /
14 advent markets and all of them
within walking distance: Guests can
therefore walk through the regional
capital of Styria and be fascinated by
the atmosphere for days on end from
20 November to Christmas Eve, 24 De-
cember. The traditional Christmas mar-
ket entices visitors to the “Hauptplatz”
– the main square – in the centre. Here
there are culinary treats as well as treats
for the spirit and soul – and you can
enjoy musical entertainment and other
performances in the Engelsspiel pavilion.
You definitely should not miss the illumi-
nations on the Classicist town hall in the
evening.
Anyone who doesn’t just want to do so-
mething good for themselves should visit
the charity Advent market at “Eisernes
Tor”. Numerous organisations offer mulled
wine there and the proceeds always go to-
wards benefiting social needs.
The festival of senses in the “Joanneum
Quarter” is a new urban spot for art and cul-
ture in the heart of Graz. Modern design and
sensual pleasure meet here at the highest
level of sophistication. The Steirische Initiati-
ve Kunsthandwerk presents first-class work
from its members’ ateliers and workshops
in the atmospheric setting of the Joanneum
Quarter’s “Leslie- und Lesehof”.
You can find souvenirs from all over the
world at the market on ”Tummelplatz”, while
the two arts and crafts markets on “Färber-
platz” and “Mehlplatz” mainly offer traditio-
nal tasteful Christmas handicrafts. The third
square in a very small area, the “Glocken-
spielplatz”, boasts handicrafts but also Sty-
rian delicacies that you can enjoy there and
then. You can round off the day in the festive
ambience of the old town Christmas market
in the “Franziskanerviertel”.
On the other side of the river that runs
through the city, the Mur, the chilled “Won-
derlend” in the urban district along the Mur
and the cosy advent on “Südtiroler Platz”,
near Graz Kunsthaus, attract visitors.
One highlight of the Christmas activities
is the ice nativity scene by the Finnish ar-
tist Kimmo Frosti made out of 45 tonnes of
crystal clear ice in the inner courtyard of the
“Landhaus”, the seat of the Styrian regional
government.
There are special offers for children: These
include the family programme at the Christ-
mas market on the main square every Sun-
day, children’s advent in the “Kleine Neutor-
gasse” right next to the Mur and the children
winter wonderland on “Karmeliterplatz”
square with ice rink and an exciting enter-
tainment and children’s crafts programme.
If the children are tired from walking from
one market to the other, it’s not a problem
at all as the Advent train links all the markets
together. And the greatest thing is: Adults
can use it as well.
The highlight in the truest sense of the word
is the “Aufsteirern” Christmas market on
Graz’ “Schlossberg” high above the city’s
rooftops every Friday to Sunday. The best
way to get there is by the Schlossberg fu-
nicular.
New Year’s Eve in the Capital of Delight
Graz, the Capital of Delight, is a wonderful
place though to see out the old year and
welcome in the New Year. The “Singles
New Year’s Eve party” on “Mariahilfer Platz”
already invites you to dance and flirt on 29
December ... with a bit of luck you can con-
tinue at the “Farmers’ New Year’s Eve party”
the next day and finally with the actual New
Year’s Eve party on the evening of 31 De-
cember through into 1 January.
On the last day in December there is the
New Year’s Eve run through the city centre,
which is either five or ten kilometres depen-
ding on how fit you are. Anyone who wants
to take things a bit easier, can simply watch
or enjoy a relaxing New Year’s Eve tour or
culinary New Year’s Eve walk. STOP

CHANGE IN THE CITY
Even the most glamorous and liveliest cities
in Europe are even more glamorous and
lively than usual on one day or one night: on
the last day of the year and the night into the
first day of the new year. The New Year is
celebrated publicly everywhere, locals and
tourists mingle in the light of the fireworks ...
THE New Year’s Eve city in Europe per se
is Berlin. More than a million people have
been gathering on the streets around Bran-
denburg Gate year after year since the fall of
the wall in 1989. Most of them on the party
street are young or at least act as if they are.
The wild partying around the countless fes-
tival stages with live bands, DJs and interna-
tional stars extends from Brandenburg Gate
to the Victory Column two kilometres away
and does not end until the early hours of the
morning. Even the city of light Paris and the
British metropolis London cannot compete
with the mega party in Berlin. But they score
with their backdrops: the Seine and Tha-
mes, the Eiffel Tower and London Eye lit up
by fireworks are very special highlights.
One of the most impressive capitals at New
Year is Vienna. The Austrian capital is distin-
guished by its traditional elegance, which is
not a contradiction in terms with wild party-
ing: the hot spot is the large square in front
of the town hall. The New Year is heralded

known as “Austria’s voice” in Vienna’s St.
Stephen cathedral. The cliché is also actu-
ally true here: (almost) the whole of Vienna
dances a waltz once the Pummerin has
chimed midnight. The highlight of Vienna’s
New Year’s Eve though is the New Year’s
concert by the Vienna Philharmonic on 1
January. There are no seats left for this as
the highly coveted tickets that can cost up to
more than 1,000 euros are always drawn by
the end of February. That doesn’t mean that
you cannot enjoy this concert though: it is
broadcast on a huge screen on the town hall
square with a live feeling and by TV chan-
nels in 90 countries. As a result, 50 million
people watch it worldwide.
Just under 250 kilometres from Vienna,
in the second largest capital of the former
Austro-Hungarian monarchy, New Year’s
Eve is not called “Silvester”, like in German,
but “Szilveszter”, and captivates just as
many people as its Viennese counterpart.
The action takes place in the, on this night
hopelessly overcrowded, Vörösmarty tér in
the heart of the Hungarian metropolis. The
square is just a stone’s throw away from the
Danube, which links Vienna and Budapest.
In Budapest, and this is a very special tip,
you can even spend New Year’s Eve on a
boat and enjoy the crowds and action from
there – with a special Budapest gala dinner,
Champagne and the legendary stuffed cab-
bage around midnight.
The “Golden City” of Prague, capital of the
Czech Republic, also promises a traditional
Central European New Year’s Eve feeling
with fireworks from Letná hill, which are best
experienced from the banks of the Moldau
(in Czech Vltava). Prague is proud to have
been considered one of the most beautiful
cities in the world since the Middle Ages, a
reputation that it naturally has to share with
quite a few other metropolises, but at the
end of the day every visitor can draw their
own comparisons and make their own per-
sonal choice.

This might even be for Zurich. There the
tradition is newer, the composure is greater
and the ban on private fireworks is some-
what more strictly controlled in the party
areas. However, the international flair in the
sophisticated Swiss city makes New Year’s
Eve a special experience nevertheless: the
hub of the public celebrations is Bürkliplatz
square, where the Limmat flows into Lake
Zurich. Many visitors don’t rely on the nu-
merous restaurants there though but bring
their wine and Champagne with them.
All these cities have one thing in common.
They are cold on New Year’s Eve. Nonethe-
less, Europe’s most northerly capital Reykjavik
is not any colder (at least on average over the
years) and is considered to be a secret tip for
New Year. At the end of December, start of
January, the night lasts 20 hours in Iceland, the
ideal conditions for long firework displays, which
many Icelanders and their guests don’t admire
down in the city but prefer to watch from attrac-
tive viewing points, like the architecturally spec-
tacular Perlan hot water storage tank. When the
official fireworks start just before midnight, which
strictly speaking aren’t official at all because they
are organised by the citizens themselves, rough-
ly 200,000 people are out and about. That is far
more than the city’s officially recorded inhabitants.
With a bit of luck, you can also experience the
magical lights in Reykjavik that outshine all other
man-made spectacles: the polar lights that illumina-
te the whole sky. And what you can definitely see are
the Polar Sea and hot springs on the volcanic island.
Visitors celebrating the change of year in
a Mediterranean metropolis cannot ex-
pect it to be hot but a bit warmer. This
might be in Italy or also in Spain of course.
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, claims to
be Spain’s party capital. And it does every-
thing possible on New Year’s Eve to keep
this promise on Plaça de Catalunya,
the Les Rambles promenade and Plaça
Reial. It’s not Champagne that flows here
but Cava, which goes splendidly with
air-cured ham, sausages and rice dishes or
even the simple Pa amb tomàquet (white
bread with tomato, olive oil and salt).
Madrid, Spain’s actual capital, boasts a
world record: the San Silvestre Vallecana
takes place there on the last day of the year.
It is considered to probably be the largest
fun run in the world, the number of entrants
is limited – to 29,000. Everyone else cele-
brates on the streets, also with Cava and
in particular on the Puerta del Sol main
square with its bell tower. When it heralds in
the New Year with twelve chimes, anyone
who manages to eat twelve grapes during
this time doesn’t need to worry about their
happiness next year. Last but not least, you
can also welcome in the New Year wonder-
fully in Istanbul, at the interface between
Europe and Asia. You don’t even have to
decide on a continent: Instead you can get
on a boat and party on the Bosporus, the
strait between the two continents. STOP

There is a clear preference for those who
love cars with the three-pointed star: the
Mercedes Suite in the former tower of the
former Württemberg regional airport is
120 square metres and extends over three
floors. For the lucky folks who actually want
to pick up the abovementioned CLS (or also
an AMG A45) directly at the factory in Sin-
delfingen, the hotel offers a special “V8 HO-
TEL Mercedes Pick-up Event” from 99 eu-
ros per person in a double room, including
numerous extras such as a welcome beve-
rage, factory tour as well as shuttle service
to the Mercedes-Benz customer centre.
For those who prefer to trek to Zuffenhausen
because a Porsche is waiting for them, the
V8 HOTEL is also the perfect home base:
ANYONE WHO GETS A 911 CARRERA BLACK EDITION OR A CLS COUPÉ FOR CHRISTMAS AND SOON HAS TO DRIVE TO
STUTTGART FOR THIS REASON IS IN PERFECT HANDS AT THE V8 HOTEL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STUTTGART MOTOR-
WORLD. ANYONE WHO IS NOT GRANTED THIS FORTUNE ALSO HAS GOOD REASONS FOR A TRIP THERE: EXCLUSIVE
VEHICLES, NEW SPORTS CARS, “OLD-TIMERS AND YOUNG-TIMERS” AS WELL AS VEHICLES WITH TWO WHEELS AND
FOUR WHEELS ARE FEATURED ON A DISPLAY AREA OF OVER 24,000 SQUARE METRES.
The Porsche Works with museum is only
about 20 kilometres away from the hotel.
Yet Porsche and Mercedes not only stand
for desirable cars in the Stuttgart Region,
but also for two of the world’s most fascina-
ting automobile museums: the Mercedes-
Benz Museum is the only museum in the
world that can flawlessly portray the over
125-year history of the automotive industry
from the very first day. 160 vehicles and a to-
tal of more than 1,500 exhibits can be seen
on nine levels with a display area of 16,500
square metres. The museum sees itself as a
place of innovation and shows that history
is also always forward-looking. The Porsche
Museum built according to plans from the
Vienna architectural office Delugan Meissl
Associated Architects is a bit leaner. But
more than 80 vehicles (and every one is a
Porsche) on a display area of 5,600 square
metres are also more than 80 good rea-
sons to come here.
Had enough of German cars? The MO-
TORWORLD around the V8 Hotel is one of
the most fascinating scene meeting places
in the sector featuring old-timers and con-
noisseur vehicles, but also in the motor-
sports and biker scene.
Anyone who still has not had enough can
return to the V8 HOTEL … in one of the
fascinating automobile theme rooms!

“Our goal is to develop light solutions which
are extraordinary in terms of technology and
design.” This is how the XAL mission state-
ment starts. XAL is a company headquarte-
red in Graz (Austria) with about 1,000 em-
ployees that produces and markets lights
and lighting systems in 150 cities and over
50 countries for hotels, shops and offices,
but also living rooms. The most important
subsidiaries are based in Munich, Zurich,
London and New York.
Since 2011 the Belgian brand Wever &
Ducré also belongs to the XAL Group. The
company is located in Roeselare, one of the
important European centres for light design.
Two of the company’s products were distin-
guished with the Red Dot Award 2015. The
suspended luminaire BISHOP (designed by
3HDraft), a modern classic inspired by in-
dustrial factory lighting from the 1930s, was
honoured with an “Honourable Mention”.
The lean LED luminaire ELLO (designed by
Serge & Robert Cornelissen BVBA) won one
of the coveted Red Dot awards.
XAL has been consistently relying on LED
technology for years, and has thereby ac-
quired outstanding know-how in the field
of sustainable light solutions. The minimali-

won seven of the if Design Awards in 2014
with TRAPEZ, HELIOS Floor, CIRO Ceiling,
ASMO Read, HELIOS Suspended, AURO

However, XAL’s philosophy not only entails
extraordinary individual products, but also
impressive complete solutions in coopera-
tion with excellent architects. One example
is “House M”, a private residence in Meran
designed by the South Tyrolean architectural
firm “monovolume”, which XAL lights up, or
the Lake Hotel at Weissensee in Carinthia,
where a similar situation is successful.
This is commensurate with XAL’s self-image:
not just to be internationally present, but to
be at home all over the world, in order to
provide – quite naturally, but strikingly good
– the lighting concepts and technical stan-
dards, service and the understanding for in-
