BAISAKHI

• Baisakhi (or Vaisakhi) is a major Sikh festival that is celebrated throughout INDIA, especially in the Punjab on 13th April. Sikhs visit the gurdwara (temple), thank god for the harvest and take part in joyful processions and traditional performances. http://www.baisakhifestival.com/

• The festival marks the day in the 17th century when the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, founded the Khalsa (Sikh brotherhood). Men perform the bhangra dance, which tells the story of the agricultural process, from start to harvest.The day is also significant for Hindus, who celebrate the new solar year with ritualistic bathing, feasting and worshipping, both at home and in temples. Devotees pay special respect to the Goddess Ganga, who descended to Earth thousands of years ago. Huge crowds gather along the banks of the sacred Ganges River to bathe. Arrangements of flowers, grains, fruits and money aim to ensure a year of prosperity.
