Xavier F. Rugeroni, Fairmont Regional Vice President and General Manager of the Fairmont Monte Carlo, joined the hotel with a career spanning in excess of 25 years within the luxury hospitality arena. Prior to his appointment with Fairmont, Xavier was the Area General Manager for Le Méridien, Southern France & Monaco. He also served as General Manager at the Compleat Angler in Marlow, the Westbury in London and Le Méridien Penina Golf & Resort in Portugal no less. The Player met with Xavier find out more about the man who spends his time working at the very forefront of his establishment.AJ: Hi Xavier it’s great to meet you and firstly many thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for the Player. My first question would be where are you originally from, as you seem most learned in a variety of languages?XFR: Well I originally grew up in Tangier, Morocco where I was based for 14 years and we were schooled in the traditional French system until we left. My father was English and my mother was Spanish, however it has to be said, I did not speak English until the age of 17 as we spoke only Spanish at home and French at school. I left school at 16 and managed to get a job in a Yacht Marina in Gibraltar.

AJ: So what did you want to be when you were young, by the sounds of it a sailor maybe?XFR: I always dreamed of being a diver in the Royal Navy. I absolutely adore being at sea or at least close by it. The thought of being a diver carried risk and mystery and this intrigued me no end. Unfortunately the closest I ever got to achieving it was working in the Yacht Marina in Gibraltar, clearing anchors at a depth of no more than 10 meters, not as exciting as I had dreamed of.AJ: So what initiated the interest in the hotel & hospitality industry?XFR: After working in the marina, I spent three years on a large charter yacht with 25 crew and I worked in various roles within the ship. The Captain became my mentor and instilled all the values that I lacked at the time as a young seaman, teaching me respect and discipline! Ultimately, he was the one who suggested to me to go for hotels when I announced after three years on board that I would be buying a Norton 850 motorcycle and spending a year riding around Europe on it. I actually spent 18 months and truly enjoyed the time on the road discovering some amazing people and places. AJ: You sounded like a bit of a maverick as a young lad, what was one of your most

It was quite simply amazing and I still make trips to have it today, however, nowadays luckily I don’t have any issue affording it, just time issues enjoying it!AJ: What would you say has been the proudest moment in your life?XFR: Without a shadow of a doubt when my children were born. Lawrence was born in London and Charlotte in Oxford. It’s a poignant part of life and something I will always be eternally proud of. AJ: Can you tell me what is the best thing about your job, that little something that gets you up every morning?XFR: It has to be the challenge and the variety of the day ahead. I am always striving to be the number one hotel in the city. It’s about achieving those tangible results that make business’s grow and evolve, it’s about staying ahead of the competition and building a team of winners around you with a

respect and drive that will make it happen for the unit! AJ: On a more personal level, what is your favourite movie and can you tell me why?XFR: It has to be Master and Commander as it encapsulates strategy, leadership, discipline and dare, plus it stars Russell Crow and he is one of my favourite actors. AJ: If you could have 24hrs of anything you want, do anything you would like, be anywhere in the World, what would you do

with your 24 hours?XFR: I would just like to be on a big sailing yacht with all those I love, cruising the arctic on a beautiful spring day. I would love to moor up and walk the glaciers admiring the wildlife and savoring every minute with friends and family. Thank you Xavier for some wonderful answers, it was a pleasure to learn a little bit about what makes a successful man tick and what makes him smile!

embarrassing moments?XFR: I quite literally froze on stage during an early moment in my career whilst I was about to deliver a public speech at Windsor Polo club in the UK. I was the GM of the Westbury Hotel in London and fortunately for me I was rescued by my then marketing manager. Thankfully I have never frozen again! AJ: You have obviously travelled a lot so where is your favourite place in the world?XFR: In a very simple sentence and not wanting to use an old cliché, my home ... wherever that may be!AJ: During your travels you must have had some amazing meals. Can you tell me what was your favourite meal and where did you have it?XFR: It has to be Bouillabaisse at the Mere Germaine restaurant in Ville Franche with some good friends. I was
