• The following presentation is part of the research that includes photocopied material delivered in the classroom, like pictures bellow:

Architectural style

• Classification of the architecture in terms of form, techniques, materials, time period, region, etc. It overlaps with, and emerges from the study of the evolution and history of architecture.

Sketch the building by following instructions:

- Use vertical and horizontal lines- Consider the proportions of the represented building

Look at the building front and find (sketch and write comments):

• symmetrical shape / asymmetrical shape

• windows aligned horizontally and vertically

• chimneys. • central entrance • interesting details • windows - arched or curved above

Look at the following architecture elements and sketch them:

• Pilaster• Pediment• Transom• Moulding• Mullion• Portico • Turret• Cornice• Courbel• Tracery• Chimney

Pilaster

• A rectangular column with a capital and base, projecting only slightly from a wall as an ornamental motif.

Pediment

• A triangular element, similar to or derivative of a Grecian pediment, used widely in architecture and decoration.

Transom

• A horizontal crosspiece over a door or between a door and a window above it.

Moulding

• Decorative part of the architecture that defines, casts shadows, enriches, emphasizes, and separates, and is usually horizontal or vertical, although it occurs around arches and vaults. It is an essential part of architraves, bases, entablatures, and string-courses, and is found in almost all periods of architecture

Mullion

• A vertical member separating (and often supporting) windows, doors, or panels set in series.

Portico

• A covered entrance whose roof is supported by a series of columns or piers, commonly placed at the front entrance to a building.

Turret

• Small or subordinate tower normally forming part of a larger structure, especially a rounded addition to the angle of a building.

Cornice

• molded or decorated projection that forms the crowning feature at the top of a building wall or other architectural element

Corbel

• In masonry, a projection or one of a series of projections, each stepped progressively outward with increasing height, and usually projecting from a wall or chimney; serves as a support for an overhanging member or as a purely decorative element.

Tracery

• bands or bars of stone, wood, or other material, either subdividing an opening or standing in relief against a wall and forming an ornamental pattern of solid members and open spaces.

Chimney

• An incombustible vertical structure containing one or more flues to provide draft for fireplaces

• Recompose the image of the building by changing the way it looks. – Use pencil, marker and tracing paper, – or cut and glue the photocopy of the

building
