STUDYING THE SEA FLOOR

Treasure Hunting

How are we going to find the treasure? We need first to study the sea floor, sounds good right?Yeah. Lets find the treasure now!Wait! Dont be so excited we will come up on that later. I would like first to introduce to you the techniques in studying the seafloor.Okay. okay I will listen to you coz I want to find the treasure !WANT TO FIND THE TREASURE TOO?

TECHNIQUES IN STUDYING THE SEA FLOOR

SAMPLING

Several devices collect sediment and rock directly from the ocean floor. A rock dredge is an open mouthed steel net dragged along the sea floor behind a research ship, The dredge breaks rocks from a submarine outcrops and hauls them to surface .

This is a rock dredge right?

Yeah! Very good!

SAMPLINGRemember that sampling has a Physical contact with the sea floor

can we use Sampling in finding The treasure?Let me first finish my discussion,Understoood!Ok!

SEA FLOOR DRILLING METHOD Developed for oil exploration also take core samples from the oceanic crustLarge drill rigs are mounted on offshore platforms and on research vessel. The drill cuts cylindrical cores from the other sediment and rock which are then bought to the surface for study.

It is include to the technique in sampling.

Oil Exploration, I like explorationMe too, so lets explore better. Lets go to the next technique

Other pirates who want to find the treasure tooWelcome to the next technique! Hope you get it.Indirect contact with the ocean floor! I want to try it, and use to find the treasure! It will help me better, clue and guide if where are the treasure.Just watch and learn.

REMOTE SENSING

Let me guess, remote sensing do not require direct contact with the ocean floor.

Yeah. You are right!

AWESOME!

TECHNOLOGIES USED IN REMOTE SENSING!!

Commonly used to Map the Sea Floorit emits a sound signal from a research ship and then records the signal after it bounce off to the sea.

SONAR

I think dolphins have sonar

Works in the same way but uses a higher energy signal that penetrates and reflects from layers in sediment and rock. This gives a picture of the layering and structure of the oceanic crust as well as the sea floor topography.SEISMIC PROFILER

MAGNETOMETER Instruments that measures magnetic field.Data collection by ship borne magnetometers resulted in the now famous magnetic stripes on the sea floor.

MAGNETIC STRIPES

MAGNETIC STRIPES???

These are the reasons why ocean floor have different features and too wide.

The discovery of magnetic stripes rapidly led to the development of the sea floor spreading hypothesis and of the theory of the plate tectonics.

SATTELITE BASE MICROWAVE RADAR instruments have recently been used to measure subtle swells and depressions on the sea floor.

PAG-ASA and PHIVOLCS use satellite base microwave radar.

Scientists bare currently working on sensors and robots that will be able to monitor the oceans in real time . One project called ARGO,is a set of 3000 floating sensors distributed along the ocean to measure daily patterns of salinity and temperature a of an effort to determine the nature and pace of global climate change,..

Wanna know this!

Thanks for sharing those info!!.bye bye.I think I need to go before my competitors got the treasure.

Huh? You will going to leave me again. We are now finish in the techniques in studying the seafloor

SEA FLOOR SPREADING

WHAT IS SEA FLOOR SPREADING??

LECTURE IN SEA FLOOR SPREADINGFOCUS IN THIS VIDEO WELL

RAPID AND SLOW SEA FLOOR SPREADING

Slow Sea floor spreading creates a narrow , low volume ridge thatdisplaces less sea water and lower sea level while the rapid sea floor spreading creates a wide, high volume ridge that displaces more sea water and raises global sea level.

Spreading rates also cause flooding.
