Experts agree: engineering is a profoundly international field now. In fact, according to executives inside the engineering industry as well as those in academia, engineering students who have studied abroad are much more desirable to recruiters. Indeed, studying abroad is just the thing any engineering student can do to help set themselves apart from the thousands of other candidates looking for the same jobs when it comes time to graduate. Not sure studying or interning abroad is for you? Check out the following pages where we lay out the process step-by-step – it is easier and more accessible and affordable than you may think.

Depending on your program and university, often the easiest, best and sometimes only time you can go abroad is during your sophomore year. While that may vary at your home institution, if you are at all thinking about spending time overseas then you should plan to meet early and often with the study abroad and academic advisers at your campus.

Why study abroad?Like higher education, study abroad is an investment in your future, and the second best thing you can do during your collegiate career (besides earning your college degree). More than ever, students need a competitive edge, not only with other local and national students seeking jobs, but candidates from around the globe. As with any other type of investment, studying abroad requires planning, careful management, perseverance and commitment. The personal, academic and professional rewards, however, will last a lifetime.

hoW study abroad can help youAdding an international experience to your resume during college can help you in many ways, such as:

Make you more employable – study abroad experience on a resume is •a defining advantage versus students who don’t incorporate overseas experience into their education

Gain access to international job and networking contacts •

Meet fellow students from countries and cultures around the globe•

Receive credit at your home university for courses taken abroad, and still •graduate on-time

Enable you to take engineering courses not offered at your home university•

Access to learning or further studying a foreign language•

Expanding your problem-solving and cross-cultural communication skills, •increasing your self-confidence and showing you that you can do absolutely anything you put your mind to

Enhance applications to graduate school, medical school or other •professional programs

Questions about study abroad

Who can study abroad?• Sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students. It’s never too late to plan an overseas program.

What majors can study abroad?• There are programs for ALL majors, no matter how specialized.

Do I need to know a foreign language? • Absolutely not. All programs featured in this guide are in English-speaking countries and/or are taught in English.

Can I still graduate on time? • Absolutely, as long as you plan well in advance and meet with your study abroad and academic advisers on campus.

How can I afford to pay for study abroad? • See the next section – there is more funding, loans and scholarships available than you may be aware of.

What types of programs are available? • In this guide you’ll learn about semester and year abroad programs in engineering at universities worldwide, as well as internships, summer short-term programs, and graduate-school programs too.

Where can I study?• You’ll learn about university-based programs around the world, from Australia and New Zealand to many countries in Asia and Europe. Plus, internships and graduate degree programs are widely available in New Zealand and Australia.

When should I apply?• As early as possible, but a good rule of thumb is 6-12 months in advance of when your intended program departs for overseas.

scholarshipsThere are literally millions of dollars in scholarship funding to support studying abroad. A sampling of programs available are listed below.

AustraLearn has exclusive •scholarships, such as travel grants, and there are university-sponsored scholarships from many of the Australian and New Zealand schools featured in this guide. Learn more at www.australearn.org/scholarships The Foundation for Asia-•Pacific Education – a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for students studying in the Asia-Pacific region of the world. Learn more at www.asia-pacificfoundation.org Other scholarships – check with •your university study abroad office. Many more scholarships may be available, depending on where, how long and what type of program you wish to complete abroad.

hoW do you afford study abroad? In today’s economy, the question is not “Can you afford to study abroad?” – The question is “Can you afford NOT to study abroad?” In fact, an international experience is never more affordable than it is during your college years.

As long as you enroll in a credit-bearing program (all programs featured in this guide are credit-bearing) and receive financial aid, then that aid can usually be applied to your program costs. Your university may also have special loans, grants or scholarships available too.

Plus, most programs featured in this Business guide have scholarship opportunities available. Early planning and research is key to avail yourself of the thousands of dollars available to you.

“Study abroad will allow me to have an ‘edge’ in interviews, be they work-oriented or otherwise, because of the fact that I truly lived on my own and did well on the other side of the world. Overall I am different as a person, now unafraid of change and new situations.”

- E. Bredon, University of Minnesota – Twin Cities

What are my next steps?

Visit• your college’s study abroad office for important information and details, forms and procedures at your home campus and helpful advice.

Set• goals for your study abroad experience such as what type of program you want to attend and how long, where you want to go, if you want to study a language, and what major or minor requirements you wish to fulfill abroad.

Research• program options applicable to your major and interests at your study abroad office and program websites.

Attend• a study abroad fair, if your campus holds one to speak with program representatives and get information.

Meet• as early as possible with your academic or faculty advisor, to plan an international experience into your curriculum, particularly if you are in a rigid academic program.

Plan• how you will finance and pay for your study abroad program.

Discuss• your plans with your family and loved ones.

EuroLearn has hand-selected unique programs that represent our mission of delivering a

comprehensive approach to learning in Europe. EuroLearn’s partner universities, located in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Italy, represent a diverse cross-section of academic programs giving students a unique perspective on their particular academic focus. Direct Enrollment programs allow students to fully experience a different academic culture, create lasting international relationships, and enhance their 4-year undergraduate experience by taking English-taught courses in their major while abroad.

The EuroScholars Program is a unique opportunity for independent and high achieving undergraduate students interested in gaining research experience in their academic discipline. The program allows students to spend a semester at one of Europe’s 12 leading research universities participating in an established academic research project and learning the language and culture of the host country. Research opportunities exist in many fields including engineering. All research is done in English so there is no language requirement for participation in EuroScholars.
