    The Holy Quran and its importance: The Holy Quran is the most often-read book in the world. It is theliteral word of Allah, revealed to the prophet Mohammad (sws) over aperiod of 23 years though the angel Jib reel (Gabriel). It comprises thecomplete code for the Muslims to live a good, chaste, abundant andrewarding life in obedience to the commandment of Allah, in this life and togain salvation in the next.It is the chart of life for every Muslim, and it isthe constitution of the Islamic state. Allah (swt) described all things inthis book. He said: . Nothing have we omitted from the

    Book (suurah al-anaam v: 38) .Ibn masuud said: Quran providesinformation on everything but we may not be able to see everything init.Ibn Ab-baas asserted if I lose the rein if my camel, I can find it bymeans of the Quran.Jalalud-din as-Suyuiti said All sciences or branches ofknowledge are to be found in the Quran.In a word, Quran is the Book which includes all of the things in the worldand in the hereafter. Every verse of the Book has become the unalterablesource of a code of laws that governs every aspect of the life ofmankind.Allah (swt) said: : Verily, this Quran guides

    to that which is most just and right .(Suurah al-Israa v: 9).And our prophet(sws) said: I left you two things,you will not go astray untill you follow these two; the Book of Allah and theSun-nah of His Prophet. (Muat-ta). And he encouraged us to recite it andsaid: "The best of you is the one who learns the Qur'anand teaches it." (Bukhaari)

    Characteristics of the Holy Quran

    The Holy Quran is the amazing book which is not written by any human, itsauthor is God (Allah) himself.It is such a unique and wonderful book thateven after centuries, a single word of it has not changed. It is in its originalform even today. It is not an easy task to write about each and everycharacteristic of Quran as no man can actually describe how wonderful andgreat this book is. But here are a few characteristics.

    It is the right guidance or way or course or direction or manner or

    mode or conduct for the whole mankind It is clear and manifest as far as the guidance is concerned. It makes a separation or distinction between truth and falsity . It has no discrepancies or contradictions. It has no crookedness, deceit or deviation from rectitude.

    There is nothing in it that may cause any doubt, suspicion, evil opinion,disquiet, disturbance, or agitation of mind It is the Divine Prescript, Appointment, Ordinance, or Judgment that isexplained in detail making it clear, plain and manifest . It guides to the way or course or direction or manner or mode orconduct that is the most stable, even, straight, right and direct. It puts forth examples of every manner or model [of conduct] so that

    people take admonition and be mindful. The purpose of its revelation is not to cause hardship or distress of anysort.

    Requirement of the holy Qur'an:The holy Qur'an has three major requirements gradually.

    Firstly: Proper recitation: Proper recitation of the holy Qur'an isessential. Otherwise, its meaning may be changed and the goal of Allahsspeech will be changed. It is a great sin. For this reason our prophet (s)

    said: . " Quran execrates some of its readers. AndAllah (swt) said: and recite the Qur'an with tar teal (Suurahal-Muz-zam-mil v: 4). Meaning of tarteal is making it clear, reading it letterby letter and reading it slowly. According to the direction of Allah we haveto recite the holy Qur'an with tarteal. For the proper reciting of the holyQur'an with tarteal Islamic scholars prepared some rules and named themas taj-weedSecondly: Understanding the meaning of the holy Qur'an:Understanding the meaning of the holy Quran is the second requirement of

    it. Allah (swt) said:

    * . We haveput forth for men, in this Qur'an every kind of similitude, in order that theymay receive admonition. (It is) a Qur'an in Arabic, without any crookedness(therein) in order that they may guard against evil.(Suurah az-Zumarv: 27-28). He also said: . Do they not then earnestlyseek to understand the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up bythem?(Suurah -Muham-mad v: 24).

    Finally: Practicing the rules of Quran: The main and final requirementof the holy Quran is the practice of its rules in every sphere of life. Allah(swt) revealed the holy Quran so that its rules are followed in every step oflife. He said: And whosoever doesnot judge by what Allh has revealed, such are the Kaafiruun (i.e.disbelievers - of a lesser degree as they do not act on Allh's Laws).(Suurah al-Maaidah v: 44). He said: Andwho does not judge by that which Allah has revealed: such are wrongdoers.(Suurah al-Maaida v: 45). He also said .And whosoever does not judge by what Allh has revealed (then) such(people) are the Faasiquun (the rebellious i.e. disobedient (of a lesserdegree) to Allaah. (Suurah al-Maaida v: 47). So everyone must try tofollow its rules completely, not partially.Because Allaah (swt) said:

    " Then do you believe in a part of the Scripture and reject

    the rest? Then what is the recompense of those who do so among you,except disgrace in the life of this world, and on the Day of Resurrection theyshall be consigned to the most grievous torment. And Allh is not unawareof what you do.(Suurah al Baqarah v: 85).

    Tajweed:Taj-weed ( ) is an Arabic word, means intonation, modulation,improvement, elocution. As a term, it means proper pronunciation duringrecitation of the holy Quran as well as recitation at a moderate speed. It isalso a set of rules for better recitation of the holy Quran. This can only bedone by pronouncing each letter from its correct articulation point, givingthe letters their rights in inherent characteristics, and dues in conditionalcharacteristics.Imam Ibnul-Jazaree recited the following verses about theimportance of tajweed:

    It is compulsory to recite with taj-weed, for the one who doesnt recite theQuran with taj-weed, is sinful.Because it was sent down by the lord with tajweed, and like this it hasreached us.And taj-weed is the ornament of the recitation, and the beauty of the

    performance and reading.

    Session -3Makhaarijul Huruufof the Holy Quran:

    The Holy Quran has been revealed in the most comprehensible spokenArabic in the then Makkah. Allah (swt) said:Verily, I have sent it down as an Arabic Quran in order that you mayunderstand.(Suurah usufV: 2) .Arabic alphabet consists of twenty nine

    These letters are not pronunced from a particular part of the articulatorygland, but need the assistance of various glands those are called al-makhaarij( ( in taj-weed. In the human body, the area of theseplaces is divided into five main sections:

    1. Al- jawf ( ) : the interior.2. Al-halq ) ) : the throat.3. Al - lisaan ( ) : the tongue.4. Ash - shafataan ) ) : the lips.5. Al-khay-shuum )) : the nasal passage. There are totally

    seventeen pronunciation places in these five main sections.Section: 1

    The interior. This section includes only one place (makh-raj).Place: 1

    The empty part of open mouth. The vowel sound of (Alif) pronouncedaa, (Waaw) pronounced oo and (Yaa) pronounced eeemerge from this place.

    Section: 2

    The throat section.This section contains three places (makharij).

    Place: 1The deepest part or bottom of the throat. From this place two letters ( Hamzah and Haa) are pronounced.

    Hamzah is a click produced by a quick compression of the lowerpart of the throat which is closest to the chest e.g. , , .And Haa is produced in the back of the throat.e.g. , , .

    Place: 2The middle of the throat. From this place two letters( Ayn and Haa) are pronounced. Aynis a strong guttural produced by compression of air passagesdeep in the throat. e.g. , , Haa is pronounced with a strong explosion of air from the chestusing the middle of the throat e.g. ,

    Place: 3

    The upper part of the throat. From this place two letters ( Ghaynand Khaa) are pronounced. Khaa is a strong continuous guttural produced at the back of

    the palate e.g.

    Section: 3The tongue section: This section contains ten places (makhaarij)Place: 1 Qaafis pronounced when the part of tongue closest to the

    epiglottis touches the palate e.g.Place: 2

    Kaafis pronounced when the part of tongue slightly beyond theepiglottis touches the palate e.g. ,

    Place: 3 these three letters arepronounced when the middle partof tongue touches the palate. Jeem is pronounced similarly to the English proper name Jim orthe first letter in 'jet' e.g. , , Sheenis equivalent to the sound sh as found in the beginning ofthe word 'ship' e.g. , ,

    Yaais pronounced as y in 'yes'.Place: 4

    Daadis pronounced when the upturned edge of the left, right orboth side of the tongue glides along the routes of the top premolars andmolars e.g. , ,

    Place: 5 Laam is pronounced when the edge of the tongue touches the gumof the top incisors, lateral- incisors, canines and premolars. It isequivalent to the English lateral consonant l heard in the word life e.g.

    Nuun is pronounced when the edge of the tongue touches the gum ofthe top incisors, lateral- incisors and canines. It is equivalent to the wordnoon e.g. , ,

    Place: 7 Raa is pronounced when the edge and tip of the tongue touches thegum of the top incisors and lateral- incisors. It is equivalent to the

    English letter r e.g. , ,Place: 8, , these three letters arepronounced when the tip of the tongue

    touches the root of the top incisors. Taa can be heard in the first letter of the word 'tale' e.g. ,,

    Place: 10 , and these three letters are pronounced when the tip of the

    tongue touches the tip of the bottom incisors. Zaa can be heard in the word 'lizard' e.g. , , Seen can beheard in the word 'sad' e.g. , ,

    Section: 4 :The lips section.This section contains two places (makharij)

    Place: 1 Faa is pronounced when the center-portion of the bottom lip

    closer to the mouth touches the tip of the top incisors .It is pronouncedlike the f in 'far' e.g. ,

    Place: 2 and thesethree letters arepronounced by meeting two

    lips .

    Baa is pronounced when the wet portion of the lips meet . It ispronounced the same as the b in 'bat' e.g. ,

    Meem is pronounced when the dry portion of the lips meet. It ispronounced the same as the m in 'man' e.g. , ,

    Waaw is pronounced when the sides of the lips meet but thecenter forms an oval. It is pronounced like the w in 'Wool' e.g. , , Section: 5

    The nasal passage section.Gun-na is pronouncedfrom the portion of the nostrils where the soft

    part meets the bone. This sound is made in the time ofikhfaa( ),id-ghaam ( ), nuun mushad-dadah( ) and meem mushad-dadah) ).e.g ,

    Session 4Teaching &Training on correct pronunciation of Quranic letters andwords formationThe forms of quranic letters:

    Arabic language is not like that of English , because it is read and writtenfrom the right side and its letters do not remain in the same form in thebeginning ,middle and the end of a word .A chart of Arabic alphabet formsis given below.

    In the above chart, we saw that six letters ( , , , , , ) were notconnected to the letters following them, therefore their initial formsmatched the isolated and their medial forms matched the end.

    The sun letters and the moon letters.Arabic alphabet is divided into two parts; one is called )Sun letters( and another is called moon letters " "( moonletters)

    This classification is depended on the direction of pronunciation. When ' 'are joined with any sun letter at beginning of a word , the will not bepronounced but silent and the next letter will pronounced twice taking thesign of tash-did .When ' are joined with any moon letter the will be pronounced takingthe sign of sukuun over it.

    In the first word the is silent, because it is joined with one of the sunletters. And in the second word the is pronounced because it is joinedwith one of the moon letters.# When ' ' are joined with any word, the ending of that word must be

    with a single vowel mark and without the end of any word in maximumtime will be with two vowel signs tanween (nunation)

    Example:al qalamu not al qalamunqalamun not qalamu

    In the first word, the ending letter is with a vowel sign and in the secondword the ending letter with tanween (nunation).

    The visible elements of pronunciation:

    For uttering any quranic letter or word we have to know some terms.Specially four terms. They are;

    ' al -harakah, ' ' at- tanween, ' at- tashdid ' ' as -saakin.A person- who knows Arabic grammar can read correctly any Arabic word orsentence without assistance of these terms, but a beginner needs themvery much . In the Arabic language a vowel is called " " and aconsonant with vowel signs is called ' ' mutahar-rik moved and aconsonant without a vowel sign is called ' ' saakin restion.al Haraakat ( ) vowels

    There are three short vowel signs in Arabic language. They are ad-dhammah, al- fathah and al-kasrah.Ad- Dammah ( ) The first vowel sign:

    Dammah (-) is like as a small waw above a consonant. It is theEnglish equivalent of the letter o and u e.g.Example:

    Tanween ( ) nunation:In the above lesson, we knew about the three vowels of the Arabiclanguage. We also learned that these vowels have the capability ofdoubling. The sound produced as a result of double vowel signs ( )on a consonant is called Tanween. The letter which holds thistanween in known as munaw-wan ( ). Since, all three harakat havethis capability of doubling, they are given separate names: a doubleddammah is called a dammataan( ), a doubled fathah is called afathataan ( ), and a doubled kasrah is called a kasrataan( ).When a double short vowel sing is stay over a letter, then the letterpronounced with a additional "nuun" with sukuun. And this "nuun" is notwritten but it is pronounced. The tan-ween occurs on the last letter of the

    word; it may not come upon a letter which is in the middle or beginning.Maximum times it is used for denoting a word as an indefinite word.

    Some variations between haraka and tanween in example:Letter with one fathah )) is pronounced ta, but the same withdouble fathahs ( ) is pronounced as tan, with double dammahs ( ) ispronounced as 'tun' and with double kasrahs ( ) is pronounced as 'tin'.

    Letter with one fathah ( ) is pronounced ja, but the same withdouble fathah ( ( is pronounced as jan. with double damma ( ) ispronounced as 'jun' and with double kasrah ( ) is pronounced as 'jin'.letter with one fathah ) (is pronounced ha, but the same with doublefathah ( ( is pronounced as han. with double dammah( ) is pronouncedas 'hun' and with double kasrah ( ) is pronounced as 'hin'.

    Dam-mataan means two dam-mahs (_ ) or a doubled dam-mahs is knownas dam-matan. . For example, the letter 'baa' with two dam-mah sounds like'bun' or 'bon'.

    As-sukuun( ) Vowel lesssukuun means quietude, silence or stillness. In taj-weed, it refers to

    absence of vowel. When a letter is without any vowel mark it is called saakin (vowel less or resting). It indicates a linking relationship with nearbyletters. For indicating this sukuun Arab used to use a semi-circle sign suchas or 0 over any letter. A letter with sukuun sign must link to its anyprevious letter (to its right - with its own short vowel). This relationship will

    form a single or syllable or sound. when one consonant in a word is with theshort vowel sign and the following letter is saakin , the two letters form asyllable, they will be read together and thus produces a joint sound e.g.lan : The word is stop and indicated as a syllable. lam ,ab ,at aj , in. For further understanding some words including sukuunand their transliteration are given below:Example:

    Tashdid ( )Tashdid ( ) means emphasis, intensification, doubling or geminating.When a consonant occurs twice, one after the other without a vowel in

    between, it is written once and the sign of emphasis ( -addah) is placedover it. It is functionally equivalent to writing a consonant twice in Englishlanguage. A letter with tashdid is called mushaddad ( ) doubled orintensified or stressed. A letter with a shaddah ( ) is pronounced twice e.g.

    < dhal- la < thum- ma etc. It has variousways:1) Tashdid with dammah eg.

    Session :5

    Is-tiadha and bas-mala: The meaning ofistiadhah ( ) is seeking refuge or

    protection. In tajweed seeking the protection and refuge with Allah from

    satan before recitation of the Quran is called istiadhah In the QuranAllah (swt) said:So when you want to recite the Qur'n, seek refuge with Allh from Satanthe rejected one.(Suurah an-nahl v: 98)

    The famous Sentence of is some rules ofistiadhah: Seeking refuge should be silent in the time of reciting Quran silently. In the prayer it will be done silently. It will be done loud in the time of reciting Quran aloud.

    Repeating the seeking of refuge after cutting off the recitation of theHoly Quran by coughing, sneezing or by talking referring to thereading or meaning of the verses

    Repeating of seeking refuge before beginning of reciting Quran shouldbe repeated after cutting off reading by work or normal conversationor by eating etc.

    : Bas-malah means reciting .In tajweed, before reciting fromthe Holy Quran reciting the name of Allah is called Bas-malah. It is also

    called Tas-miah and full sentence ofBas-malah isThe ways of seeking refuge with Bas- mala at the time of recitingHoly Quran.

    Here three things. Istiadha, Bas- malah, the part of Quran. There are fouroptions of reciting. Readig everything separately.Seeking refuge, stopping, saying the bas-malah, stopping and thenstarting the suurah:

    Reading all three jointly with each other.Seeking refuge, saying the bas-malah and starting the suurah all in onebreath without stopping.

    Joining the basmalah and the beginning of the part of Quran.Seeking refuge then stopping then reciting the basmalah and the beginningof a part of Quran in a breath.

    Joining seeking refuge with the basmalah then stopping. Then reciting

    from the holy Quran. Above these four ways are permissible.

    Session -6

    The Rules of Noon ( ( Saakin & TanweenThere are four rules ofnuun saakinah & Tan-ween in taj-weed; they are asfollows:

    1. Id-ghaam ( )2. Ikh-faa ( )3. Idh-haar( )4. Iq-laab ( )Id-ghaam (( : If after Nuun Saakinah or Tan-ween any of the six

    letters (( appears then there will be Id-ghaam.Id-ghaam is of twotypes:

    In & theIdghaam will be without Ghun-nah, which is known

    asIdghaam Taam.

    In the remaining four letters ( ) Id-ghaam will be with Ghun-nah,which is known as Id-ghaam Naaqis.

    The Rules of Meem Saakin ( )There are three rules of Meem Saakin ( ) in tajweed.they are:1. Idghaam( )2. Ikhfaa( )3. Izhaar ) )

    Idghaam( ) : It literally means to assimilate or incorporate. Ifthe Meem Saakin ( ) is followed by another Meem ( ), Idghaam will

    take place i.e. the first meem ( ) will be assimilated into the secondmeem( ) and it will be read with Ghun-nah.

    Session -8Al-Tafkheem and al-Tarqeeq with reference to the Rules of nda Raa:Some of the arabic letters are always pronounced thick with a heavy accent(Tafkhim). Some letters are pronounced thin with a light accent (Tarqeeq).

    Siraatal-ladhiina an-amta alay-him ghay-ril magh-duubi alay-himwalad daaal-liin

    The way of those on whom you have bestowed Your Grace; Not (theway) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who wentastray.

    Suurah al- kauther (Abundance, Plenty)

    Bis-mil-laa hir-rah maanir- raheem.

    In the name of Allh, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

    In-naa a-taynaa kal-kaw-thar.

    Surely, I have bestowed upon you (O Muhammad (sws) abundanceof good.

    Fasal-li lirab-bika wan-har.So pray toyour Lord, and offer sacrifice (to Him only).

    In-na shaa ni'aka huwal-ab-tar.. Surely, it is your enemy who will be cut off (from prosperity andevery good thing in this world and hereafter).

    Suurah al -kaafiruun (The Disbelievers/ Atheists)

    Bis-mil-laahir-rah-maanir-raheemIn the name of Allh, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

    Qul yaaa ay-yuhal-kaafiroon.Say (O Prophet): O you who reject faith!

    Laa a-budu maa ta-buduun.I worship not that which you worship;

    Wala an-tum aabidoona maa a-bud.Nor will you worship that which I worship.

    Suurah an-Nasr (The help/Succour/, Divine Support)

    Bis-mil-laa hir-rah maanir- raheem.

    Idhaa jaaaa nasrul-laahi wal-fat-hu.When comes the Help of Allah, and Victory

    Waraaytan-naasa yadkhuluuna fee deenil-laahi af-waajaa.

    And you see that the People enter Allah's Religion (Islam) incrowds,

    Fasab-bih biham-di rab-bika wais-tagh-fir-hu in-nahuu kaana taw-

    waabaa. So glorify the Praises of your Lord, and ask for His forgiveness.Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and forgives.

    Suurah al-Lahab /al-Masad (The Flame/the Palm Fiber)

    Bismil-laa hir-rah maanir- raheem.

    In the name of Allh, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

    Tab-bat yadaa abii lahabiu watab-ba.

    Perish the two hands of Ab Lahab (an uncle of the Prophet), andperish he!

    Maa agh-naa an-hu maaluhu wamaa kasab.

    All his wealth and all his gains will not benefit him.

    Sayaslaa naaran dhaata lahab.

    He will be burnt in a fire of blazing flames.

    Wamratuhu ham-maa latal hatab.

    And his wife too, the carrier of fire wood and bearer of slandersand calumnies (will also be enveloped in the flames);

    Fi jeedihaa hab-lum mim- masad.

    A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre round her (own) neck.

    Suurah al-Ikhlaas/at-Tauhiid ( The Unity/the Sincerity)

    Bi-mil-laa hir-rah maanir- raheem.

    In the name of Allh, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

    Qul huwal-laahu ahad

    Say: He is Allah, the One and Only.

    Al-laahus samad

    Allah, the self sufficient Master.

    Lam yalid walam yuulad;

    He begets not, nor was He begotten;

    Wa lam yakul lahu kufu-wan ahad

    And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him.

    Suurah al-Falaq (The Daybreak)

    Bis-mil-laa hir-rah maanir- raheem.

    In the name of Allh, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

    Qul auudhu birab-bil-falaq.

    Say: "I seek refuge with (Allh) the Lord of the daybreak,

    Min shar-ri maa khalaq.From the evil of what He has created,

    Wamin shar-ri ghaasiqin idhaa waqab.And from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with itsdarkness,

    Wamin shar-rin-naf-faathaati fil-uqad.And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the knots,

    Wamin-shar-ri haasidin idhaa hasad.

    And from the evil of the envier when he envies.

    Suurah an-Naas (Mankind)

    Bis-mil-laa hir-rah maanir- raheem.

    In the name of Allh, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

    Qul auudhu bi-rab-bin-naas.Say: I seek refuge with the Lord and Cherisher of Mankind,Malikin-naas.

    The King of mankind,

    Ilaahin-naas.
