Feminist Duration: A Reading Group onFeminisms, Consciousness-Raising and Leave-Taking

The next meeting of the Feminist Duration ReadingGroup will focus on translation as a feminist practice.
Together we will read sections of Gayatri ChakravortySpivak’s “The Politics of Translation” from her bookOutside in the Teaching Machine (1993). Though theessay does not relate directly to the reading group’sprimary focus on the texts and practices of Italianfeminisms, we will consider how Spivak’s emphasis ontranslation as an imperative for feminist politicsrelates to the group’s overall aims and ambitions.
Three short introductory excerpts, taken from Italianfeminist texts in English-language editions, areincluded as supplementary reading. Teresa deLauretis and Lucia Chiavola Birnbaum’s translationnotes, though brief, highlight several issues relating tothe interpretation of Italian feminist texts in a secondlanguage. Navigating these issues, Sandra Kemp andPaola Bono’s introduction to The Lovely Mirror: ItalianPerspectives on Feminist Theory presents, instead of a
