t H E S t u d i oStudio Bloch is located in the harbour of tórshavn, designed in a converted 125-year-old factory. the environment is inspiring and in these whereabouts time and space is in abundance.

Studio Bloch operates in the world’s smallest capital – tórshavn – an oasis in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Here, creative souls can go to work far from the hustle and bustle of big city life.

the studio was conceived and is run by Jónas Bloch danielsen, who has been producing, engineering and mixing since 1988. He has recorded artists in some of the best studios in the world on 3 continents, along with mixing live sound for artists in over 30 countries, at many great venues and festivals.

All of this gave him the desire, inspiration and experience to convert an old building into a beautiful, world class facility, Studio Bloch.

the building project, completed in 2012, combines the rugged beauty of the original building with ultra modern technology and design, carefully using existing natural materials to create a studio boasting state of the art equipment and fantastic sounding rooms, as well as an atmosphere and working environment which is unique and inspirational.

Studio Bloch consists of three recording rooms, a control room, access to a concert hall, two bathrooms and a lounge/kitchen.

the spacious and atmospheric control room is built around a Euphonix System 5-MC console which is used to control Pro tools Hd 10. All conversion is currently handled by digidesign 192 interfaces, more technical specifications can be found on the technical specifications page or on www. studiobloch.fo the pride of Studio Bloch is the studio’s large live room. the room has a high absorbtive ceiling and oak floors, and the back wall looks the same as 125 years ago; the rocks make it one of the most beautiful and natural looking diffusers in the world. the room has a lively balanced sound with a relatively short reverberation time, which makes it sound very pleasant and airy but still defined. the room is equiped with a Steinway type A Grand Piano from 1969.

the drum room is situated in an old freezer room from the days of the ice factory in the building. to treat the sound in the room, a sheet of plaster has been removed from one of the walls to reveal the old cork blocks which were used as isolation 100 years ago. the room has a very warm, tight sound, making it ideal for various aplications, such as close drums, vocals, guitars etc. the studio also has a vocal booth which has been dampened down with absorbtion and which has a cork wall, making it ideal for vocals, guitars etc. Along with the recording rooms there is a kitchen/lounge area where you can relax between sessions, prepare something delicious to eat or have a cold Sisu.

the studio is located in Østrøms old factory, built in 1887, close to the marina in the city center of tórshavn. tórshavn is the capital and largest city of the faroe islands with a population of approximately 20.000, -and therefore - probably the smallest capital in the world.

despite tórshavn being a remote destination, the trip to the faroe islands is only a 2 hours flight from Copenhagen, or 1½ hours from london (spring to autum)

the faroe islands, population 48.000(70.000 sheep!), is an autonomous region of denmark with it’s own government, state budget and flag. the faroe islands has a very rich history of arts, both music, literature and visual arts. the people of the faroe islands grow up with music as a natural part of everyday life, and have been for centuries.

Boasting musical talents such as Eivør, teitur, týr, orka, Sunleif rasmussen, Budam, tróndur Bogason, Hamferð, ygdrasil, MC Hár etc., the islanders have more than their fair share of musical talent for their relatively modest population.

the faroe islands is an unspoiled, yet modern society. you can find all modern commodities in the capital of tórshavn, but at the same time you can go hiking in beautiful nature 5 minutes from the city center. the faroe islands lie in the north Atlantic drift(continuation of the Gulf Stream), meaning that the temperature of the sea is pretty constant 12 months a year. this makes the climate relatively stable all year, as temperatures rarely drop beneath zero degrees celsius or above 15 degrees celsius. in the short term, the weather can change very drastically though – it is said that you can experience all four seasons during one afternoon on the faroe islands.

Coming to the faroe islands gives you an opportunity to get isolated from everyday life in one of the most inspiring places in the world. this is a strong benefit for music recording, since all visiting artists get the peace of mind to focus 100% on the music which is being recorded. And when you choose to have a break, you can go on a sightseeing trip with norðlýsið, AtV driving in the mountains, take a long and beautiful hike or you never know, maybe Jónas will take you for a trip on his sailboat.
