“LES GENS ME DISENT SOUVENT QUE JE SUIS OPTIMISTE, JE LEUR REPONDS QUE JE SUIS PARFAITEMENT REALISTE. JE SAIS QUE NOUS AVONS LE CHOIX, CE N’EST PAS CELA ÊTRE OPTIMISTE”
BUCKMINSTER FULLER
“PEOPLE OFTEN TELL ME I AM AN OPTIMIST, AND I SAY, I AM A VERY HARD REALIST. I KNOW WE HAVE THE OPTION TO MAKE IT, AND THAT’S VERY DIFFERENT FROM BEING AN OPTIMIST.”

STUDIO 1M2 IS AN ARCHITECTURE OF MILIEUS(*) OFFICE.
1M2 ARCHITECTS EXAMINATE THE PROJECTS AS URBAIN MILIEUS AND AS NATURAL MILIEUS. 1M2 STRATEGIES GO THROUGH REALIZATION, DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT TO EDITION, GRAPHICS AND COMMUNICATION.
OUR MEANS OF REPRESENTATION ARE SUITABLE TO EACH MILIEU AND ITS PROBLEMS.IN EACH CASE, THE SCALES, URBAIN AND HUMAN, ARE FIRMLY RELATED.
OUR PRACTICE IS MEANT TO BE A HYBRID BY DOING RESEARCH THROUGH PROJECT AND PROJECT THROUGH RESEARCH.
1M2 DESIGNS PROCESSES OF (RE)GENERATION.
STUDIO 1M2 EST UN BUREAU D’ARCHITECTURE DES MILIEUX(*).
LES ARCHITECTES DE 1M2 ETUDIENT LES PROJETS EN TANT QUE MILIEUX URBAINS ET EN TANT QUE MILIEUX NATURELS. 1M2 PREND EN CHARGE LES STRATEGIES DEPUIS LA REALISATION, LA CONCEPTION ET LE PILOTAGE JUSQU’A L’EDITION, LE GRAPHISME & LA COMMUNICATION.
NOS MOYENS DE REPRESENTATION SONT EN ADEQUATION AVEC LE MILIEU ET LA PROBLEMATIQUE.AU CAS PAR CAS LES ECHELLES, URBAINE & HUMAINE, SONT ETROITEMENT RELIEES.
NOTRE PRATIQUE SE VEUT UN HYBRIDE EN PRATIQUANT LA RECHERCHE PAR LE PROJET ET LE PROJET PAR LA RECHERCHE.
1M2 CONÇOIT DES PROCESSUS DE (RE)GENERATION.
TWO MILIEUS INDICHOTOMY BUT UNITED: NATURAL ANDHUMAN
ONE INCLUSIVEECOLOGY:HUMAN BEING+ ARCHITECTURE+ NATURE
THERE IS NOT A SMALL CHANGE.
Our interventions are tacticals. We know that 1M2 can make a great difference!
We are looking for economically viable “win - win” answers.Resources are already here: materials, grey matter, energy!
DO,BUT WITH.
DO MORE WITH LESS.
TO DO, BUT FAIR.
9 Million humans on the planet. Resources are becoming scarce and expensive. Recover them!
There is only case-by-case. We will find the appropriate process through an accurate evaluation.
A MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVE.
Reality is plural. Teams are multidisciplinary. We enlarge our regard to other disciplines, which were never before used in the urban planning, in order to enrich the process.
THINK. ANTICIPATE.PLAN.
1M2 practices project methods through research and research methods through project. We start by examinating the milieus in which we are interventing. It’s a challenge for us to contribute to the existing site of thought.

FAR FROM PRODUCING AN INNAMOVIBLE CONCEPT.WE CONCIDER THAT EVERY PROJECT IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS OF IDEATION, INCLUDING INITIAL WILLS, FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES, TEMPORAL VARIATIONS. WE DEMAND THE ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF THE PEOPLE/ORGANIZATIONS WHO WILL CONTACT US.
WHEN THE PROCESS OF IDEATION HAS STARTED.WE CONCEIVE THE “DEVELOPMENT” AS THE MATERIAL AND INTELECTUAL OPTIMIZATION OF THESE IDEATIONS. IT MEANS IMPROVE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF IDEAS UNDER DEVELOPMENT.
CARRY OUT A PROJECT IS, FIRST OF ALL, A CHOICE OF METHOD. REALIZATION’S MODALITY IS ESSENTIAL FOR ITS SUCCESS AND FOR ITS INTERGATION IN THE INHABITED AND NATURAL MILIEUS.
PROJECT BECAME A REALITY.OUR STUDIO ACTS LIKE AN ACTIVE OBSERVATORY: OUR COMMITMENT CONTINUES AS THE ACCOMPANIMENT PART STARTS.
PROCESS /PROCESSUS
LOIN DE PRODUIRE UN CONCEPT INNAMOVIBLE.NOUS CONSIDERONS QUE TOUT PROJET EST UN PROCESSUS CONTINU D’ “IDEATION” QUI COMPREND LES VOLONTES INITIALES, LES POSSIBILITES FUTURES, LES VARIATIONS TEMPORELLES. NOUS DEMANDONS L’IMPLICATION ACTIVE DES PERSONNES/ORGANISMES QUI NOUS SOLLICITENT.
LORSQUE LES “IDEATIONS” SONT EN ROUTE.NOUS CONCEVONS LE DEVELOPPEMENT COMME L’OPTIMISATION MATERIELLE ET INTELLECTUELLE DE CES IDEATIONS. IL S’AGIT DE PERFECTIONNER LA MISE EN PLACE DES IDEES EN COURS DE DEVELOPPEMENT.
REALISER UN PROJET C’EST AVANT TOUT CHOISIR UNE MODALITE. LA MODALITE DE LA REALISATION EST ESSENTIELLE A SON SUCCES ET A SON INTEGRATION DANS LES MILIEUX HABITES ET NATURELS.
LE PROJET DEVENU UNE REALITE.NOTRE STUDIO AGIT COMME UN OBSERVATOIRE ACTIF: NOTRE IMPLICATION RESTE ET L’ACCOMPAGNEMENT FAIT PARTIE DE NOTRE PRATIQUE.

ACCOMPAGNEMENT
The milieu express a philosophy and a willingness to act. This perspective allows us to:+ Delimit the urban milieus by porous borders.+ Reconnect the natural milieus through hydrography, topography, woodlands and other natural areas.+ Protect the existing inter-linking forces, strengthen or create them.+ Recreate activity zones maintained by the inhabitants (social link).+ Regenerate the degraded milieus (from pollution, societal segregation).+ Make the existing milieu convenient to its regeneration /metamorphosis /transformation /adaptation.
Compilation and classification of material data, immaterial study, logistics, legal and statistical media (Datalab).+ Urban planning code Data.+ Data about ecology and biodiversity.+ Financial, economic and budgetary data.+ Data of cultural events timetable.+ Mobility data.+ Demographic data.+ Mapping of movable and immovable property of the city.+ Mapping of public institutions.+ Mapping of the “extended” heritage : hydrographic, landscaped, built, cultural, historical, of biodiversity, etc.

SENSOR
The Chrono-Urbanism is a study of the city based on:+ The Chronotopie (inhabitants’ temporality linked to the use)+ The Rhythmanalysis (See Mobi-Meter)
These studies allow us to:+ Map the spatio-temporal use of the existing urban spaces.+ Map and make propositions about the use of the different urban spaces in a reasonable way that is connected to every-day life during all hours / days / weeks / weekends / seasons / events.
CHRONOMETER
LUXMETER
The visual quality and lighting comfort is a topic that is already discussed considering the harmony of the built environment. But it is also necessary to take it into account in order to:+ Detect the light pollution caused by signals, vehicles or other elements (including advertising).+ Check the existing lux levels in natural and urban areas or the different architectures we have to deal with during the day.+ Restore the lux levels according to the appropriate uses within the urban / natural areas.+ Set up the “black frames“ in the environmental strategy, reducing also the energy consumption.
SONOMETER
The sound quality is a key issue because it affects the livability of a place, but it also helps in the “subjective” apprehension of the milieu. The sound may be generating conflicts in common life.+ Detection of noise pollution “breaking” the urban space: decibels from vehicles such as airplanes, trains, lorries, buses and cars.+ Sound “unwellness“ survey near major traffic axes / air corridors / railways.+ Inter-neighborhood conflicts in high-density districts (suburban or collective housing).+ Noise from construction sites.+ Natural noises (forests, rivers, lanscape or agricultural areas).
TELESCOPE
The telescope allows us to increase our understanding of the milieu by “interlocking the glance“.+ Study on a regional scale.+ Study on a territorial scale.+ Study of the administrative boundaries.+ Study of the existing environments’ limits.+ District / area scale.+ Proximity scale.+ Street scale.+ Neighborhood scale.
TOOLS /OUTILS
CAMERA
The camera offers an “augmented / increased” look. Recording the milieu in human scale according to:+ The changing seasons, hours, days, events.+ The speed (slow down or speed up).+ From different transport vehicles.+ From different perspectives of different people.
MICROSCOPE
Micro-urbanism is a city-study based on:+ The economic and participatory interactions between citizens that would release the most important dynamics in the city.+ The flexible, ephemeral, even artistic interventions in the city in order to power the subjective content of the inhabited space.+ The trails of unexplored /undeveloped /abandoned /interstitial places where existing or future synergies could take place.+ The proposition of existing places-in- common and the encouragement of associative and participatory structures in order to be installed.+ Mobility of the existing human structures in order to make them more visible and open to a bigger public (repositioning in the city).+ The information and communication through social networks related to projects happening in the city and the physical space.
MOBI-METER
The Chrono-Urbanism is a study of the city based on Chronotopie and the Rhythmanalysis. The mobi-meter is the tool of rhythmanalysis (Lefebvre) that allows us to:+ Map all the elements and rhythms found in the urban and natural environments, in particular, those who are specific to the human body and the city.+ Map and measure the elements and the rhythms based on their intensity, speed and frequency.+ Map and classify the rhythms compared to each other.+ Diagnose the existing “urban diseases “ in the urban and natural milieus.+ Develop a strategy to “restore” or re-generate the rhythms that allow co-existence.
MICROPHONE
Interview of city’s actors / spectators in order to obtain a variety of subjective interpretations of the milieu. The interviews are carried out:+ At decision-making level.+ At participative level.+ At the level of the neighborhood‘s committee.+ At the level of the local resident.+ At the level of organizations with which the city should interact.+ At the level of people who are involved in the management, maintenance,taking-care, daily life in the city.
TOOLS /OUTILS

Detail of Facade
Reflective and inclinated facade: designed in order to reflect the sunlight and the heat. The mirror-effect intergrates the building into the desert landscape. At the same time, the inversed tilt serves to reduce friction between the facade and the sand in case of storms.

Strategically placed in the cities and especially in the villages, it’s hasn’t be found yet a solution for their reuse. Their degradation is faster in dense urban centers.
HOW TO GAIN FROM THEIR POSITION IN THE CITY?
