AIMS

• To inspire teachers and occupational therapy students about tactile

illustrated books

• To share knowledge on the development of a new module in co-

operation with professionals in the field

• To discuss opportunities in other curricula for this module

OT EDUCATION AMSTERDAM

Bachelor degree, 4 years, 240 ECTS in total

Three semesters module ‘Activities’ (3 x 2 ECTS), core themes are:

Royal Dutch Visio, centre of expertise for blind and partially sighted people in The Netherlands

Occupational therapists work with teachers and students:

• Internships

• Bachelor thesis

• Specialist education (OT for visual problems)

TYPHLO & TACTUS DESIGN CONTEST

The Typhlo & Tactus organisation was created to increase the quantity, quality and availability of books with tactile illustrations for young children with little or no sight. Members share the following aims :

• To increase awareness of the need for tactile books

• To share ideas, resources and information

• To participate in relevant research

• To promote excellence in this field through national and international competitions

• To publish guidelines on the production of tactile books and on their use with visually-impaired children.

TYPHLO & TACTUS DESIGN CONTEST

The T&T group consists of representatives from the following countries:

Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and the UK TYPHLO & TACTUS is now open to any country in the world and partner of ICEVI.

Each country is eligible to submit five entries (tactile illustrated books)

TYPHLO & TACTUS DESIGN CONTEST

The next T&T competition will happen in October 2013, next week!

The international jury will work in Helsinki the 24th ,25th, 26th of October in Helsinki (Finland).

The jury consists of professionals as well as visually impaired and blind children.

MODULE: TACTILE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS

“Design a tactile illustrated book for visual impaired or blind children in the

age between 3 and 12 years old”

Programme: 1 semester (20 weeks)

VISIO lecture: 1 hour

Consultancy hours with lecturer: 8 hours

Process:

Brainstorm Elevator pitch Feedback Design

Evaluation Presentation Professional judgement

RESULTS

In the end:

50 books were designed and fabricated

Jury in the Netherlands by VISIO (OT and

children)

Selected 4 books from first year OT students for

entry in the competition!

2 books were nominated for a special program

for younger children

LEARNING OUTCOMES STUDENTS

Experiences:

• Creative, out-of-the-box, creating, experimenting

• Learn about tactual development and the demands for illustrations

and braille

• Learn about visual impairment and blindness in children

• Working with other OT students

• Experience pleasure in doing activities (together)

• REAL assignment with a benefit and stakeholder (VISIO)

• Thrill of getting selected
