HOW IT ALL BEGANIn 2002, the founders gathered and developed the IEA concept: to promote and provide equestrian athletic competition among middle and high school students.

Together, and with the assistance of thousands of equestrians, parents, families, friends and sponsors, the IEA has grown into a national organization.

Since its start in 2002 with 175 riders on 13 teams, the IEA now has over 11,000 members with almost 1,100 teams in 36 states.

These numbers are only expected to increase!

COMPETITIVE OFFERINGSCompetitive offerings include Hunt Seat classes on the fl at and over fences, and the Western discipline, which presents horsemanship and reining classes. Student riders may compete in beginner, novice, intermediate and open levels.

Riders not only compete for individual points, but also team points. The format adds team camaraderie to a normally individual sport. Competing this way allows for serious athletes to not only prepare for a collegiate future in equestrian sports, but also the opportunity for scholarships.

“As a coach I feel incredibly lucky to work with an organization that offers young equestrians so many opportunities! Our riders have developed such a strong sense of sportsmanship and horsemanship because of the ideologies and practices of the IEA.” – Coach, Chatham, VA

sense of sportsmanship and horsemanship because of the

“Every horse that I got to ride had something to teach me and that’s what makes IEA so unique, getting to ride so many different horses!”

so unique, getting to ride so ”

WHY JOIN IEA?The unique aspect of the competitions, both at the local and national level, is that horse ownership is not required. Horses and equipment are provided to each rider at every event by the host team. Since the horse is new to the rider, the scores are based upon horsemanship and equitation. The format levels the playing fi eld while maintaining affordability for participants.

HOW TO START A TEAM Starting a team requires three members and an IEA coach. Each team must have access to an equine facility whether in a private or public school or at a local barn. The coaches and facilities must provide proof of insurance and all must submit membership applications and annual dues.

– Coach, Chatham, VA
