Chinese New Year and the Big 6/Kid Pix

Students apply the Big 6 research process to a holiday celebration. Following the 6 steps, students question, find and extract information, synthesize and evaluate. Students use grade appropriate databases such as MeL, Grolier Online and Fact Monster to search for relevant information. They use the illustration software Kid Pix to create a dragon, which is an iconic symbol during the Chinese New Year celebration. They demonstrate their knowledge of different tools within the software to create a detailed, colorful, and appealing image. This presentation focuses on Common Core, 21st Century Information Literacy Standards, and the Michigan Educational Technology Standards.

Public Service Announcements - Prezi and PowerPoint

Students learned the importance of creating public service announcements and how they are helpful. Messages include things that will promote safety and awareness in school, as well as reminders of things we should be aware of outside of school. Using thinking maps, students planned what their message would be and who the target audience was and created a presentation using Prezi or PowerPoint. Students wanted to compare the appeal of the two presentation tools and created a survey to see which students preferred. Utilizing these presentation tools allow students to be creative and take ownership of their work. It builds excitement about the learning process. This presentation focuses on Common Core, 21st Century Information Literacy Standards, and the Michigan Educational Technology Standards.

Inkheart – Multimedia Presentations

Students were chosen to be a part of a book club to engage in meaningful conversations about fiction story elements. They read and documented their opinions of the story as well as pondered why the author chose to create scenes in a certain way. Students were given the opportunity to choose how they wanted to present this story to others; this would promote the book and hopefully raise student interest. In this presentation, students will show scenes from the story using Claymation, and discuss story elements using Prezi and Photo Story. All aspects of the process will be documented and showcased. Students had full control of the decision making process and the final product. Through collaboration and technology integration, they will convey the importance of having choice in their learning. This presentation focuses on Common Core, 21st Century Information Literacy Standards, and the Michigan Educational Technology Standards.

Jean Wenner “Ants, Shoes, and Technology” Fourth Graders used their creativity and talents to complete a digital story highlighting advertisements for shoes they designed. Focusing on elements in the Common Core, 21st Century Information Literacy Standards, and the METs, students worked with literature, informational text, and technology to create this presentation. Beginning with “”Why Ants Don’t Wear Shoes” and completing Big 6 research about fashion design/designers, and ending with the design and marketing of their own shoe, students interacted with every piece of their projects.”

Jean Wenner Chickerella - An Exploration in Kindergarten Creativity Kindergartners shared the story, “Chickerella”, a funny version of the classic “Cinderella”. They each chose their favorite character from the story and used their skills on KidPix to demonstrate their knowledge of options on the tool bars, character and setting. Their writing skills were put to the test when they wrote/dictated sentences describing their favorite character.

Jean Wenner Etiquette for School Life Students used digital photography and PhotoStory to show how to follow all the rules of the school. They created a list of the most important things for all students to know to have good etiquette at school and photographed students demonstrating the appropriate behaviors. At the same time, they enlisted teachers to break the rules and photographed them as well. The result is a meaningful and humorous digital story that really hits home the need to have good etiquette to keep a safe learning environment.
