Handwritten Typography

Student samples

How are texts---and typography---evolving in response to changing

technology?

(please answer it on your DW)

Introduction: What is Typo?

Tips

• These student samples show you some possible ideas dealing with typo usage.

• Pay attention to the mood and feeling being created by handwritten typography. The expression of design must base on the story of the original movie or fiction.

Tips

• For your version you should analyze the movie genre (e.g. romance, war, horror, etc.) and its storyline. You must show the original poster(s) or relevant promotional items on your DW. Just like what we had learnt from movie campaign design last year!

• Study well the plots and key visual elements of the movie would help enhance the impact of your written design.

Front Cover Design (1)

• Try to analyze what additional graphical elements help to enhance the word Psycho?

• Also study how the written word (interpreted as blood stain) is used powerfully!

• Evaluate the space in a composition (why the elements placed on the top?)

Front Cover Design (2)

• Study how textures create tension and horror in this example (both title and the edges of design)

• Are they have similar design solutions in dealing with Psycho?

• If yes, what new design concepts would intensify the mood and feeling of the DVD cover?

• What about this design? Why

using a chair as subordinate

element?

• How’s the written typo in this case?

• Which is your favorite designs among the others? Why?

Jaws by Steven Spielberg

1975

• What is the movie genre? How do you feel?

• What design principles are used in this design? How they organized and placed in the composition?

• What is the metaphor of the swirl effect?

• Study how the typo represents to its meaning for Jaws

Frankenstein

1910

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Frankenstein&aq=f

• What is the movie genre? How do you feel?

• A classic thriller! What major visual elements are used?

• Without the character of Frankenstein, how we can use handwritten typo to create a sense of horror and intension?

Aesthetics: How you develop your written typo

Aesthetics: How you develop a simple layout design Using Gridlines Visual Hierarchy Word and Line Spacing Size Color

Remark

• In this project you must go through experimentations, on-going work evaluations and reflections to show your work progress.

• Don’t tend to thriller / horror genre so much as there are many movie/fiction themes available. Be creative in handwritten design and enjoy the process. The chosen design will move to digital platform for final manipulation as a commercial DVD cover design.
