Reading Reflection Activities

Complete the assigned number of reading reflection activities for each book you finish reading this break. Draft and edit your responses first, then use the note sheets at the back of this booklet to write or draw your final responses.

Activity 1. Make a Graphic

A graphic is an illustrated representation of the chapter you are describing. Create yours using your own paper or the space on page 12 and 13 of this booklet. Your graphic requires the following parts:

A symbol—put this object in the middle of the page. Choose a symbol significant to the chapter you are describing.

3+ colors—Each color should represent a different aspect of the chapter. Make a legend to describe why you chose each color. For instance, “Red stands for Percy’s anger at being expelled.”

Quotes—In each corner of the page, write a quote from the chapter. Choose quotes that are significant or tells something revealing about one of the characters (1-2 lines). After each quote, explain what it means and why you picked it. Title and Author– Put the title of the chapter and your name at the top of the page.

Activity 2. Storia Online Activity

Complete one (1) of the activities on Storia.com for a book you read in Storia. This activity requires internet access. 1. Go to www.StoriaSchool.com 2. Enter your classroom code and student password Select a book from

your Storia bookshelf or find a new e-book to add to your Storia bookshelf.

3. As you read, select—

Check Symbol: to complete the reading challenge quiz at the end of the book

Video Symbol: Watch videos about the book Activity 3. Create a character portrait and biography

A biography tells the true story of another person’s life.

1. Create a visual portrait or a picture of a character from your book on page 14 and 15.

2. Write a short written biography about the character to accompany the picture. In the biography, include:

a. Character’s name b. Information about their childhood c. Information about their accomplishments d. Why is this character important in the book

Reading Reflection Activities (cont’d) Activity 4. Comic Strip Recap Create a comic strip of your favorite scene from a book you read. Use the templates in the back of this booklet (page 16 & 17) or draw it on your own paper.

1. Identify a scene from the book. 2. Plan your comic strip. Think about:

a. What do the words in the captions or text tell you about the scene pictured?

b. What kind of landscape makes sense for the scene? c. What props can you associate with the scene? d. What kind of dialogue bubbles makes sense for the

interaction? e. What will transition one scene to the next?

3. Draw 7 cartoon “boxes” for your comic strip. 4. First Box: include the comic title, subtitle and author.

a. Comic title: name the scene that will be shown b. Comic subtitle: name of the book where the scene is found c. Author: include your name as the author of this comic strip d. Optional: Draw a picture in this box too.

5. Six Remaining Boxes: Create your comic in the following six frames.

6. Text: Include text in each cartoon “box” or frame. Create your own caption or dialogue. It should not come straight from the book.

7. Color: Your comic should be colored. Adapted from Read.Write.Think.

Write a short review for a book your read over break. Be sure to include the:

Tips to Make the Most of Your Reading The best way to have fun and keep learning this break is to make READING a priority.

Plan time for reading Find time to read every day.

Wake up a little earlier so you have time to read.

Swap a TV show for reading time.

Pick the right books Choose a book that’s right for your reading level (5 finger rule).

Pick out books that interest you.

Reread favorite books.

Find a book series that interests you.

Visit the library for books and events.

Make reading social Set a winter break reading goal with your friends.

Check in with your friends and talk about the books your reading.

Exchange books you’ve read with your friends.

Complete puzzles and games that involve reading with your siblings, friends and parents.

Get outside! Have a reading picnic, bring a book to the park or library, or read in your courtyard, on your front porch or in your backyard.
