t’s that time of year where things start go a bit crazy in the racing world. The Derby is over and in only a few days time we’ll be right into the thickof things with Royal Ascot. Pour Moi blitzed everything in it’s path at

Epsom and gave young superstar Mikael Barzalona his fist victory from hisfirst ride in the race.

His celebration was something to remember and Usain Bolt would certainly have beenproud. Standing upright on a horse travelling at well over 30 miles per hour when youhaven’t crossed the line yet to celebrate is something only for the brave.

In this edition we’ve given a day by day preview and hopefully picked out a few nicepriced winners for the week. The return of Frankel, Canford Cliffs and Goldikova ismouthwatering and that’s only day 1 of Royal Ascot. It brings together the best of theWorld. With runners from England, Ireland, France, Japan, Australia and America toname just a few, it’s certainly going to be a mouthwatering few days. Good luck!

Good Luck!

racing05

It was the most eagerly anticipated Derby

for decades, with last year’s winning

trainer Sir Michael Stoute and last year’s

winning rider Ryan Moore teaming up

with classy colt Carlton House, in a

bid to give the Queen her first ever

Derby winner.

After an impressive win in the Dante, Carlton House wasa firm ante-post favourite for several weeks and despite hisprice drifting in the days leading up to the race afterreports of a slight injury, patriotic punters remained loyaland got stuck in, sending him off the 5/2 favourite.

The fairytale of a Royal winner was not to be. Instead anincredible ride from young Michael Barzalona aboard theFrench raider, 4/1 second favourite Pour Moi stole theheadlines to give trainer Andre Fabre his first winner inthe race.

After Moore settled his temperamental mount at the rearbehind a scorching pace set by Memphis Tennessee,Carlton House looked to be travelling well but foundhimself squeezed for room rounding the final bend andhad to make his challenge widest of all. When he foundspace entering the straight it looked promising but he wasnever able to run down the game Irish outsider TreasureBeach.

However for the second time in two days trainer AidenO’Brien had to settle for runner-up in the big race as PourMoi, showed a blistering turn of foot in the final furlongto snatch the race by a head in a thrilling finish. That wasdespite the winning jockey appearing to misjudge thewinning line, standing up and celebrating before the horsehad actually won. Carlton House could finish only third.

So while the elusive search for Her Majesty’s first Derbywinner goes on, the plaudits should rightly go to PourMoi and 19 year old Barzalona, the youngest ever jockeyto win the Derby.

1. Dancing Rain (IRE)2. Wonder Of Wonders (USA)3. Izzi Top

This year’s Oaks was seemingly dominated by the

chances of Godolphin’s Blue Bunting, aiming to give

the boys in blue the first Guineas and Oaks double

since superstar Kazzia in 2002. Blue Bunting was

expected to relish the step up in trip and was sent

off the warm 9/4 favourite.

She was joined in the field by a strong Irish challenge led by Irish 1,000Guineas winner, Misty For Me. However it was the lightly raced 20/1shot Dancing Rain trained by William Haggas who triumphed after amasterful ride from top jockey, Johnny Murtagh. Allowed to set amoderate pace she quickened off Tattenham Corner and despite the bestefforts of Kieran Fallon on Wonder of Wonders, Dancing Rain neverlooked in danger of being caught, staying on strongly to score by

3/4 of

BRITISH BOXING BULGING AGAIN

In what has been a very busy couple of weeks for British boxing, with

the biggest domestic fight in years and billed as the bitterest of grudge

matches between old foes, George Groves vs the more brash and

arrogant James De Gale, it really didn’t disappoint as Saint George

stuck manfully to his tactics and didn’t get drawn into a personal

battle. He outboxed De Gale for much of the fight as his more

illustrious opponent got progressively more frustrated, leading to three

separate instances of him catching Groves with his head. By the final

bell, Groves had just done enough to pinch a split decision from the

judges, prompting wild celebrations. Victory was even sweeter for the

3/1 outsider as De Gale was denied an immediate rematch. Finally, the

unsung hero of British boxing Carl Froch, defended his WBC light

welterweight crown against journey man, Glen Johnson. That victory

has put him into the final of the Super Six competition and once again

proved that he really is one of the best in the world. We are bound to

be seeing a lot more of this man in the future.

MORE FRENCH JOY FOR RAFA

All good things have to come to an end but sadly for

Novak Djokovic it came just one game to soon. One

game away from being written into the history books

forever, one game away from being world number 1

and breaking the Federer/Nadal stranglehold that has

been over the sport for nearly a decade and one game

away from bettering McEnroe’s record of 42 straight

victories at the start of a season. He was also 2 games

away from his first French Open title but sadly for him

Federer had other ideas and put on a breathtaking

display to beat Djokovic in 4 sets. What more can you

say about Rafael Nadal?! Struggling early in the

tournament to maintain any set of rhythm he still did

just about enough to get through but like all great

players he was just saving his best for deeper into the

tournament. After humiliating Murray in straight sets

in the semis, it was the clash of the Titans again in the

final as he took on Federer again. Never has Roger

beaten Rafa at Roland Garros and that proved to be

the case again as he got his mits on the prestigious

trophy for the 6th time in 7 years.

ENGLISH EUROPEAN DREAMS IN TATTERS

With the football season behind us andall eyes on next year, nobody has yet forgotten thedominance Barcelona showed when destroying theEnglish champions, Manchester United. After thefirst ten minutes, United fans were hopeful they’dbe able to clinch yet another European Cup,unfortunately for them though after that first tenminutes, they barely touched the ball again. Xaviand his clone Iniesta ably supported by Busquestsdominated the central midfield in a way unlikely tobe done again at Wembley. The final score of 3-1didn’t do the dominance of Barcelona justice, whocould easily have scored six. It looks a straight-forward task of claiming the trophy again nextyear and 5/2 is definitely a juicy looking price.

LUKE DONALD FINALLY WORLD NUMBER 1

After months of agony, Luke Donald became World number 1 afterbeating Lee Westwood in a playoff at the PGA Championship at

Wentworth. Many people could have been forgiving for envisaging a state of DeJA Vu. Luke Donald had the chance to claim this honour 3 months ago at theHeritage held at Harbour Bay. On that occasion holding a 6 shot lead going intothe last day, Luke lost in a playoff to Brandt Snedeker. There was to be no repeaton this occasion, faced with the prospect of a playoff against Lee Westwood thenow former number 1 in a playoff, Luke calmly chipped his ball to within 7 feetof the pin, Westwood’s ball then spun agonisingly into the water, leaving Donaldwith a Birdie putt to claim the World number 1 spot. The pressure will now beon Donald to maintain this position and win the British Open.

BACK WITH A BANG

“He’ll really, really need the run” werethe words of trainer Sir Michael Stoute in thebuild up to the Brigadier Gerard Stakes aboutsuperstar Workforce. From the moment heentered the parade ring, it was clear last yearsDerby and Arc winner was more than fit enoughto do himself justice, fit enough to win a group 1.The field was taken along at a fast pace by themud-loving Poet who proved hard to peg backinside the final furlong but it was straight forwardenough for Workforce to win by just over a lengthwith a distance back to the remainders. The sky isthe limit for Workforce this year, he has retainedevery bit of his ability and many will argue hecould of improved.

ROYAL ASCOT

Wednesday - Day 2The feature races on Wednesday kick off with the WindsorForest Stakes, a Group 2 contest for female milers. Last yearsrace was won by the tenacious grey, Strawberrydaiquiri, popular with many female punters on course last June. Theearly entries for this race throw up some very talentedimproving horses, with the likes of Seta and Anna Salai goingto the sword. Ex-England footballer Mick Channon may holdthe key with his talented Music Show. The 10 furlong trip sheencountered at York last month seemed to stretch her, butdropping back to this mile may be ideal. Another potentialentrant comes from the same York race; in the form of theboys in blue - Godolphin’s Sajjhaa. She could give MusicShow the most to think about.

The Prince of Wales Stakes, a Group 1 over 10 furlongs, could potentially be the most exciting race of the week. Thisnewly sponsored Quipco leg of the British Champion Seriescould see the Derby and Arc winner Workforce take on the o’ so talented Australian - So You Think. The newlypurchased Ballydoyle acquisition, So You Think, hasaccumulated a total of £3,180,439 in prize money since May2009, about £4000 a day! There are no signs of him stoppingeither, and this could be the second British Group 1 on hisCV. Although Workforce will be a tough nut to crack theshorter 10 furlong trip and the possibility of him swerving thismeeting in favour of the Coral Eclipse in July makes him hardto side with.

The Royal Hunt Cup is a real punters puzzle, with a field overthe straight mile that consists of around 30 runners. One canmake a case for most of the thoroughbreds at this early entryphase, however there are a few in particular that catch theeye. Eton Forever, the winner of the consolation race on theopening weekend of the season can put his last run behindhim and make a bold bid to land the big one for newlyappointed, talented trainer Roger Varian.

However the two runners against the field are 10-1 GreenDestiny and 33-1 Man Of Action. The former mentioned istrained by William Haggas, certainly a man who knows howto win a big field handicap, with good recent success in theLincoln amongst other races. Green Destiny remainsprogressive and could be that ‘Group horse in a handicap’.Another potential handicap blot, Man Of Action will need toleave his most recent run in his horse box at home if he is toland the Hunt Cup. However, on his 3 year old CV thischestnut gelding can make a big impression on a mark of 96.

ROYAL ASCOT

Once a year flat racing fanatics are treated to a mouthwatering five-day festivaltucked away in the heart of Berkshire. The colts dust off their top hats and tails while

the fillies browse the nearest John Lewis for exquisite hats. It must be, Royal Ascot.

The Queen Anne Stakes is viewed by the majority as a twohorse race this year. A race where the Richard Hannontrained colt, Canford Cliffs, looks to avenge his stable

mate’s 2010 defeat to the super mare, Goldikova. BothCanford and Goldikova share 5/4 favoritism at the head of

the market and it’s almost a coin toss to see who prevails. The sheer tenacity of Goldikova may see her rise to the top

once more, with 13 Group 1 races on her CV, the 14thcould be coming her way in June.

The second Group 1 on the card is the King’s Stand Stakes,a slightly more muddling affair. The recent success atHaydock of Sole Power showed his 100-1 win of the

Nunthorpe was no fluke and goes there with strong claims. An international sprinter in the shape of Star Witness heads

the betting. This son of Starscraft has been seeing the rear ofthe ‘joint rated best horse’ in the world, Black Caviar, in

recent times and must have a solid chance. However, onewith an interesting profile constantly on the fringe of Group

1 success is the Rod Collet trained War Artist. Available at20-1, he makes a solid each way bet in this competitive

2011 renewal.

A race, which may be summed up in a few words, is the St. James Palace stakes. The straight mile where the mighty

Frankel will complete a racecourse gallop to pick up£141,925 in prize money. From a betting point of view the

1/3 about Frankel doesn’t make a lot of appeal, but the w/oFrankel market may be perfect for Marco Botti’s

Excelebration.

Tuesday - Day 1There have been many debates as to how the fivedays racing should be structured but it hasbecome apparent, especially in recent years,Tuesday holds the best day’s racing. SHOES

racing11FORMAL DAY WEAR

That is the official dress code for

women in the Royal Enclosure.

Trousers are permitted but only if

they are part of a suit.

Year on year, there are a number of

faux pas - nine times out of ten

because the lady in question has too

much flesh on show.

Although not compulsory any more

it is not recommended for ladies to

go bear legged. The late Princess of

Wales was famously frowned upon

when she turned up with no tights

on.

My advice would always be - try and

be as classy as possible. Also, it is

summer, so colour is essential and

it’s not Cheltenham so definitely no

tweed and avoid blacks and greys

unless you can accessorize with

some colour.

For the men morning dress is

compulsory in the Royal Enclosure.

A nice bright tie can jazz up the

black and the greys but also bring

out a little added colour through the

waistcoat. Traditional shades are

buff and dove grey, but a pastel

yellow or an azure blue can be

striking contrasts to the formal

tones of the morning suit.

Also, accessories are not just for the

ladies. A mother-of-pearl tie-pin is a

refined touch or throw in some flair

with a pocket square, picking out a

colour in your tie. But don't mix and

match the tie and pocket square -

it's a touch naff. Or shall we say a

victim of the 'trying too hard'

syndrome. Similarly ostentatious or

equine-themed cufflinks are

a no-no.

The ultimate faux pas for the men is

a cravat. Turn up in one and expect

to be laughing stock.

Always a tricky decision – on one hand we all want to look

our best with matching shoes the highest heels on show but on the other hand it is a very

long day and believe me there are not many places to sit down.

I would also say the stilettos are a bold choice as it is

predominantly grass at Royal Ascot so you risk sinking with every step.

There is a fine line between comfortable and stylish but I’d definitely go for something in

between – I have utmost respect for those who favour the ‘no pain no gain’ theory.

For men, it's black shoes all the way. A smart black Oxford always look the part and don't

ruin the overall look with a pink or lilac sock. That type of thing can only be pulled off by a

certain multiple champion trainer, whose dash can never be beaten.

HANDBAGS

Clutch bags look delightful but they

are frustratingly ineffective. I like to

have a bag that can fit; a racecard,

pens, a camera, some flat shoes

for the car park after party, makeup

and of course space for all my

winnings.

OTHER TIPS

Fake tan is all very well but like many things in moderation.

There’s nothing worse than orange streaks resembling a zebra.

Sunglasses are a must for girls but not for the chaps.

The cultural contrast with a morning suit makes shades look out of

place next to a seriously traditional look.

With hats taking centre stage jewellery takes a backseat. Less is more.

Words: Jackie Jarvis Images: racingfotos.com

RACINGFASHIONGET THE ROYAL LOOK

FASHION and horseracing go

head-to-head at Royal Ascot

where for many the thrill of

dressing up is more enjoyable

than backing winners. It is true to

say that anything goes at the

Royal meeting but there are still

a few guidelines that you must

adhere to, to get the best look.

HATS

Hats are an enormous factor in what makes fashion at

Royal Ascot so unique and so incredibly fun to watch.

In the Royal Enclosure only hats and fascinators which

cover the whole of the crown of the head are

permitted. Every year there are some fantastic hats on

show but inevitably there are some shockers.

Be individual, bring on the colour and often elegance

is key.

One tip I do have is make sure your hat fits properly –

it’s a very long day if after half an hour you get a

headache because your hat is too tight. Likewise if a

hat that is too big it is likely to blow off in the wind or

keep flopping down over your eyes.

This applies to the men as well. Top hats must be worn

at all times unless in a bar, private box or restaurant in

the Royal Enclosure, so it is essential that not only

must it look good, it must be comfortable too.

Guys, if you can lay your hands on a black silk topper

then it really is a cut above the grey versions. Afraid

today, that splendid sheen and extra height on a black

silk version knock spots off the greys.

racing13

Are you proud when you see the other ladies

making a splash in the racing world now?

I do a little bit but whilst I’m riding I want to be theleading lady and I don’t want anyone to take that offme. Cathy Gannon is doing so well and making mework so hard this year. But it is nice to see the girls dowell and it is becoming more common to see us on thetrack. It’s also good to have a bit more company as allof them are good fun.

With over 5 and a half thousand followers

on Twitter, is it fair to say you’re obsessed?

You could say that, but I think its just helping me raisethe profile, but its people like George Scott who put meoff it as his chat is just so boring.

Finally, a horse for students to follow

throughout the season?

Creme Englaise, who runs in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot and has been working well at home.

12 INTERVIEW

Having been the first female to ride 100 winners in a season, first to be ChampionApprentice and Channel 4 Racing Personality of the Year in 2008, Hayley Turner has putfemale jockeys on the map and proved that it isn’t just a mans world. Fiercely competitiveand constantly breaking the stereo type, Britain’s leading lady talks to us about how it allstarted and what goes on behind the scenes in the weighing room. We stole a few minuteswith the charming and down to earth Miss Turner on her way up to the races the other day.

Hayley Turner

What got you into racing?

I have always wanted to do something with horsesbecause I have had ponies since I was a little girl and Iwas better on the rocking horse than my sisters so Ithought I’m going to pursue this and went on a tasterday at Doncaster to see what all the fuss was about.Once I got into racing it was my mission to be ajockey, I didn’t do it for any other reason.

How old were you when you decided you

wanted to be a jockey?

When I actually properly thought about it I was justleaving school so around 15.

How did you get your big break?

I don’t know when I got my big break really. I supposewhen I got my apprentice license for the guv’nor(Michael Bell) and he started giving me a few rides sopeople started to notice me a bit more.

A horse that gave you your big break?

Good Enough Mover. I used to ride him and won 7races on him in pretty quick succession. That sort ofhelped get me going and put me on the map a bit orthe other one would be a horse called Furnace who Isuppose gave me my first big race success at Ascot.

Favourite horse?

I can’t say my pony can I?! Horseradish without adoubt as I have picked up some really nice races onhim but sadly he has just been sold to Hong Kong for alot of money. I would probably go for a horse calledThe Betchworth Kid who is going to run in the KingGeorge handicap at Royal Ascot. Maybe I’m dreamingbut 50/1 is a big price especially if the heavens opened.Stranger things have happened...

What’s it like working in a mans world?

This must be the most asked question ever. Its goodfun. I have a laugh with them all and because we goracing everyday I know them all really well, they takethe piss out of me a lot but its all good fun and a bit ofbanter.

Do you get any special treatment from them

when your riding?

No not at all. I like it that way. They don’t give you aninch but at the same time I wouldn’t give them oneeither.

Best looking jockey in the weighing room?

Jimmy Quinn. Thats only because he’s sitting next to me in the car now and he’s getting hishair dyed purple for charity. You’re going to get me kicked out this car in a minute...

You’re famous for your pool parties, will

you be having another one if you ride a

winner at Royal Ascot this year?

Yes I am! Every year it is my mission toride a winner there and I hate it when you have ridden your last ride, get beat and then you know you’ve got to wait another year for it to come round again. Not going to let that happen this time.

ROYAL ASCOT

Thursday - Day 3Ladies Day at Royal Ascot sees spectacular fashion combineitself with more top quality racing. The feature race of the dayis the Ascot Gold Cup which has been dominated since 2006by Aidan O'Brien who won the race for four consecutive yearswith Yeats. With the four time winner retired, last year's racewas won by Rite of Passage who proved to be the best stayeraround after outpacing O'Brien's Age of Aquarius. DermontWeld, again sends the former Cheltenham Festival third todefend his crown and his runner tops the ante post bettingalongside Ballydoyle's latest challenger Fame and Glory. Thetwo horses met earlier in the season at Leopardstown withFame and Glory triumphing by one and a quarter lengths. Theform of this race makes him a worthy favourite and with thetwo horses so far clear in the betting, the winner looks likecoming from one of these two. Duncan commands respect butwith John Gosden's horse far from certain to run, multiplegroup one winner Fame and Glory gets the vote despite the stepup in trip.

Thursday's racing also features a number of competitivehandicaps. One of the best of these is the Britannia Stakes overone mile. The size of the field and the effect of the handicapmake this tough to call but an interesting condender here maybe Sagramor for Hughie Morrison. A runners up place atWarwick on reappearance was followed by a close win in theBetfred Silver Bowl at Haydock and this form may be enoughto see him earn a share of the place money for the MelkshamCraic partnership.

The earlier races in the day, particularly the Ribblesdale Stakes, again look difficult to call. Dorcas Lane's surprisingly goodform this season will see her take her chance, having come outof her race at Newmarket well, she looks a live candidate on aday that provides some top quality, but highly competitiveracing.

Dancing RainIn a year dominated by superstars it could hardly be imagined that another one could develop. It’sbeen a while since an English super filly arrivedonto the scene, with Midday arguably just missingthe cut as a true Group 1 superstar.

Goldikova from France is and has long been known as the superstar of thefemale sex and it’ll be fantastic to see her racing again this year with herfirst start in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, however the nationwill be putting it’s hopes upon the shoulders of Dancing Rain.

Trained by William Haggas, only the 8th trainer to have now trained thewinner of both the Oaks and Derby, she is certainly in capable hands.Winning the Oaks on only your fourth start is no easy feat and the sky ismost certainly the limit for this daughter of Danehill Dancer. Her nexttarget is the Irish Oaks and judging by the way she’s bred she shouldhandle any ground and could be hard to beat over in Ireland. Althoughlife will be harder as the year goes on, it’s certainly exciting times for thoseconnected with Dancing Rain.

ROYAL ASCOT

Saturday - Day 5The final day of the Berkshire spectacular, and instead of aquiet winding down of events, day 5 at Royal Ascot is allabout speed! Much like the Kings Stand (run on Tuesday)there is likely to be a strong international challenge for theGroup 1 Golden Jubilee, run over a blinding 6f but with thestamina stretching climb to the line in wait. Delegator wasgood enough over a mile to go off as the punters favouritein the 2000 Guineas won by Sea The Stars and finish a closeup second, but dropped to sprinting distance last time heproduced a powerful performance at York. That showinghas led to him being made ante-post favourite for this race, and with the stiff finish all in his favour and trainer andjockey both expressing a belief he would be even better thistime, he will be very tough to beat. Australia, still fumingfrom being spanked all around their cricket stadiums byEngland over the winter, may be able to claw back lost pridethrough their raider Star Witness. No superstar in his homecountry, where the unbelievably fast Black Caviar isrumoured to be beating everything down under fromspeeding bullets to Cathy Freeman, the gulf in class betweenEuropean sprinters and the rest of the world may be wideenough for him to be capable of taking home the prize.Bated Breath is a fast improving member of the homechallenge, but this represents a major rise in class and it’svery hard not to side with the Aussie speed – unlike MitchellJohnson at Adelaide there will be no hanging left and rightwith this colt!

Dropping in class slightly but not in miles per hour, theWokingham handicap is one of the sights of the week on thetrack. Thirty horses spread out flying across the straight 6fis an amazing spectacle to watch – thrillingly fast, it alsotakes three exams worth of revision to get close to findingthe winner! The Jeremy Noseda yard showed last year thatone can be prepared for the race with confidence that it isn’ta lottery, as they landed an almighty gamble with LaddiesPoker Two, who was backed from 25/1 into 9/2f and wonin stlye. Advice for the Wokingham would be to watch outfor the draw, as a horse running on the wrong part of thetrack can effectively have little to no chance. Earlier races inthe week such as the Hunt Cup and the Buckingham Palacewill give an indication as to where you want your horse tobe drawn. One to keep a close eye on is Royal Rock, whohas won at Ascot in a big field and has dropped to a verypromising handicap mark. Very fast ground would be anegative, but otherwise a good draw would see him go veryclose.

ROYAL ASCOT

The Group 2 King Edward VII used to be known as the Ascot Derby, and as such the race conditions match those

of the Derby at Epsom. This year’s King Edward has a highclass look to it at the entry stage, with several major talking

horses such as Midsummer Sun, World Domination and SeaMoon all potentially lining up at Ascot. Of O’Brien’s lengthy

entry list, the two most interesting would probably be Apacheand Marksmanship. Apache was the name being whisperedover the winter as Ballydoyle’s potential number one Derby

candidate, and while that hasn’t been backed up by hisperformances on the track as yet, there is very rarely smoke

without fire. Marksmanship too was being talked of as aDerby horse after an impressive winning debut in Ireland, and

remains a very dark horse at this stage after just 1 run and 1win. Both Irish horses are going to need to be very good to

match Henry Cecil’s World Domination though, a horse whomade an eye catching debut when winning easily and being

promoted straight to Derby favouritism. Inexperience and the slow pace of the race found him out when asked to take

on the Queen’s horse Carlton House in the Dante, but the colt remains one of almost limitless potential.

Friday - Day 4 Following on from Ladies Day and 3 days of intense competition on (and off!) the track, you could be forgiven for expecting the

high standards of the week to be steadily declining. However much like the warriors who galloped for two and a half miles in theGold Cup the previous day, Ascot crowds seem to possess relentless amounts of stamina – and in the ladies case, new outfits!

The card itself throws up yet another Group 1 on the track, with the Coronation Stakes for 3 year old fillies following on fromthe opening day’s identical race for the colts. With the race being run over the Ascot mile, it is never a surprise to see the namesof the 1000 Guineas winners from Britain and Europe colliding in a battle for continental bragging rights in a ChampionsLeague-esque scenario. This year’s race looks likely to take a slightly different shape, with both the winners of the English andIrish races unlikely to run, leaving a group of young ladies who may not quite be top of their class. However, Richard Hannonmay hold the aces with his filly Memory. A filly with immense talent, having looked high class in winning the Albany (run hereat Ascot) and the Cherry Hinton at two years old, it is worth trusting that she will this time break on terms with the others, because if she does she could be the one true class act in the field.

19 HORSE IN FOCUS

It wasn’t until the final 50 yards, that Pour Moi ever looked like he was going to win therace and it’s credit to the young man on board that he did. It was a plan perfected by AndreFabre and executed majestically by Barzalona. The world is at the feet of Barzalona now;who is the youngest ever jockey to win the Derby. In last month’s edition we compared himto Frankie Dettori, who took 15 attempts to win the Derby, it’s quite something then thatBarzalona has won it with his first ever ride. Pour Moi will now take a mid season breakbefore heading to his long term target of the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe in his native landin October.

On the day when the nation was hoping for a Royal winner to embrace the Royal year,it took another nation to ruin the party. Pour Moi, ridden by superstar MickaelBarzalona and trained by his mentor Andre Fabre, passed every single horse in the homestraight to win the Epsom Derby by a head. Judging by the celebrations of youngBarzalona you could have been mistaken for thinking the race was over before it hadeven begun. Sent off the 4/1 second favourite and ridden with bundles of confidenceBarzalona settled him last of the field before pulling him wide to challenge CarltonHouse who 2 furlongs out looked like he could be about to put the race to bed.

Anyone for

Tennis?Rafa Nadal confirmed his status as ‘The King of Clay’ by

seeing off Roger Federer in four sets in the French Open

final and it looks likely that he will transfer his form onto

the grass and lift the Wimbledon Crown once again.

On a surface that the Spaniard hasn’t always found to

his liking, Wimbledon was once seen as his weak link but

plenty of hard work has paid off – making him fully

justified in his position as joint market leader. He shares

the head of the market with long time adversary Roger

Federer who was once virtually untouchable on grass

but has seen Nadal eat away at his invisibility in recent

years. The Swiss star looked exhausted in the Paris final

and although he will recover physically from those

exertions, mentally another defeat at the hands of the

Spaniard will have left its mark and means he should be

avoided here.

There will be plenty of players queuing up to tackle the

‘Big Two’ with the likes of Djokovic, Murray, Del Potro

and Soderling leading the charge but it will take a great

performance to see off Nadal and 9/4 still looks value.

The Women’s Tournament has the look of a more open

affair with plenty fancying their chances but preference is

given to Maria Sharapova.

A former Champion here, the Russian loves playing on grass

and having performed excellently in the French Open,

where she made it to the semis on a surface that is by no

means her favourite. The form she showed in Paris makes

her look an excellent proposition here and the 9/2 which is

available should be snapped up.

bettrends - adviceSebastian Vettel – to take pole and race victory SP

Kamui Kobayashi – to finish in the top six SP

Rafa Nadal 9/4

Maria Sharapova 9/2

Formula One descends on Silverstone on July 10 for

the British Grand Prix and if the happenings of the

2011 season so far are anything to go by, then we

should be expecting Red Bull to complete a

hat-trick of wins in the race.

Red Bull won two years ago through Sebastian

Vettel before taking the chequered flag again last

year when Mark Webber won the race for the first

time. There is every reason to expect one of the

pair to be victorious in next month’s race, which will

be the ninth round of the 2011 World

Championship.

Having won in 2009, Vettel secured pole position

last year and appeared to be on course for

back-to-back victories in the British Grand Prix.

But the German, who would later be crowned

world champion, was outmuscled for the lead going

into the first corner by team-mate Webber and ran

wide. As the Australian secured victory from

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ Nico

Rosberg, Vettel was forced to recover and

eventually came home seventh.

You can almost guarantee that there will be no

repeat of that outcome for Vettel, who has

outqualified his team-mate in five of the six races

this season, all five guaranteeing him pole position.

You would therefore be advised to hunt out the

best price for both pole position and victory to go

the way of the current championship leader.

Another bet worth looking at is for Sauber’s Kamui

Kobayashi to repeat his top-six finish from last year.

Silverstone is a circuit that suits his aggressive style

and, as his fifth place in the Monaco Grand Prix in

May showed, he is in the right kind of form to make

the top six at Silverstone.
