Getting Started This section contains some tips to ensure that you begin your coach training with CoachInc.com in the right direction. It can be very overwhelming to participate in courses, to establish yourself as a coach and to develop a strong Personal Foundation. The Core Essentials Program courses are organized in a manner to best support you through the process in your first year. At your earliest convenience:

1. Get a headset with a Mute button • Headsets can now be purchased in a wide variety of office supply and

electronics stores and websites. In the US, headsets for standard phones and cordless phones can be purchased for as low as $25.

• Wearing a headset will prevent you from experiencing physical discomfort while participating in TeleClasses, conducting phone meetings with your peers and during your telephone coaching sessions.

• Wearing a headset will also ensure that our class telephone bridges remain quiet to prevent distractions while learning. It is critical that background noise (such as workplace and family conversations, dog barking, children playing or crying, washing dishes, etc.) is muted out while participating in TeleClasses.

2. Purchase your three Core Essentials Textbooks from John Wiley& Sons.

• You may purchase your materials online at

http://www.coachinc.com/studentbooks. Please follow the links that pertain to your geographic area.

• The Coach U Personal and Corporate Coach Training Handbook • The Coach U Personal Development Workbook and Guide • The Coach U’s Essential Coaching Tools: Your Complete Practice

Resource

We're pleased to offer students 20% off of the core Coach U texts when purchased as a set. Individual copies of Coach U textbooks will be offered at a 15% discount.

3. Consider hiring a Professional Mentor Coach

• Although working with a Mentor Coach is optional at this point, it is strongly

advised. We recommend that you work with a Mentor Coach during your first year of coach training for at least three months. (If you wish to become certified at some point, working with a certified coach will be a requirement.)

Page 5: Student Policies and Procedures Polic… · This student manual is a guide to policies, procedures and general information about CoachInc.com and the student experience. The information

• We encourage you to hire a Mentor Coach who will work with you on these

three areas: a) skill development, b) practice development and c) personal development. Working with an experienced coach can significantly shorten the learning curve. And, you will be able to more confidently communicate the value of coaching to your prospective clients when you have received value from working with a professional coach.

• You can learn more about working with a CoachInc.com approved Professional Mentor Coach by sending a blank email to: [email protected]. After you send a blank email to the address listed, you will automatically receive an email (unless your email system filters it out) with a list of Professional Mentor Coaches, mentor coaching fees and plans as well as potential interview questions.

4. Keep an open mind for discovery and learning

• In our opinion, the most masterful coaches remain humble and know that they

don’t know it all even after years of coaching. Do your best to keep an open mind although you will hear conflicting opinions and styles. What might seem too radical or conservative to you today, you might embrace in the future as you experience clients from all walks of life.

• You will participate in courses with students from many other countries. This creates a very rich learning environment and will help you stay abreast of cultural and regional differences; this knowledge and experience may come in handy with your coachees in the future. Many seasoned coaches have clients from several continents.

5. Enjoy the process! • Many students find themselves stepping outside of their comfort zones as

they engage in new conversations and behaviors with clients, new coaching peers and Faculty. It is normal to feel overwhelmed and/or intimidated when we try something new. Do the best that you can and reach out to connect with members of our community to support you.

About CoachInc.com CoachInc.com is the leading provider of personal and corporate coach training. Not only are we the largest provider of coach training and coaching services in the world, we are also considered to be the first coach training company in the world. Coach U and Corporate Coach U have offered the most comprehensive coach training programs since 1992.

About the Core Essentials Program

CoachInc.com strongly values the International Coach Federation’s Core Coaching Competencies. In fact, the Core Essentials Program is designed to ground students firmly in the ICF’s Core Competencies, Ethics and Standards before moving on to one of the advanced coaching programs: Coach U’s Advanced Coaching Program (ACP) or Corporate Coach U’s Advanced Corporate Coaching Program (ACCP). Before specializing in life, career, small business or corporate coaching, we believe that all students should have some level of comfort and experience in coaching people from all walks of life. Ultimately, our philosophy is that coaching is coaching at the core. Although you may have a preference to work with a certain type of individual or company, it’s important to recognize that most always there is a cross-over between personal and business coaching; after all, we are working with human beings whose lives are not always compartmentalized. Aside from some specific practice building components, the Core Essentials coaching models, skills, approaches and strategies are universal – they can be used in personal coaching, business coaching and even team or organizational coaching. What will be different, however, is the language that is used between the coach and coachee. You will notice that both life and business examples are used in Core Essentials courses. The Core Essentials Program will prepare you for ICF certification at the Associate Certified Coach (ACC) level. (You will learn more about the International Coach Federation in the New Coach Orientation and Context for Coaching courses.)

About CoachInc.com’s Advanced Coaching Programs

There are two ways in which students may enter the Advanced Coaching Programs.

1. Once students graduate from the Core Essential Program, they may choose to upgrade into one of CoachInc.com’s advanced coaching programs (ACP/ACCP).

2. Coaches who have previous coach training and have a minimum ACC from ICF.

Previous training must be verified and an entrance exam must be completed for entry into one of CoachInc.com’s advanced coaching programs (ACP-T/ACCP-T)

Student Conduct

At CoachInc.com, we work with professionals who want to be masterful personal, business and corporate coaches. To commensurate with that, here's what we expect of you:

• Preparation for each TeleClass session through review of curriculum material and completion of assigned fieldwork. Students are required to review material prior to class as material you won’t be necessarily going over the material but integrating it into action, understanding and practice.

• Thoughtful and enthusiastic participation during TeleClass sessions.

• Participation in improving our programs through completion of faculty evaluations.

• Respectful and professional interactions with faculty, students, and CoachInc.com staff.

• Commitment to honor the principles and ethics of personal and business coaching, so that you are a credit to the profession.

• Willingness to master the competencies of personal and business coaching.

• Willingness to stretch and grow personally, and to make the "shifts" which will help you successfully transition to "being" a coach.

• Readiness to be a role model for your clients, colleagues or direct reports through your way of being rather than through your expertise.

• A desire to forward the profession of coaching by being a resource and support for CoachInc.com and other coaches.

• Completion of TeleClass evaluation forms so that we may continue to serve you better.

Please note that Faculty members reserve the right to support a positive learning experience during courses. If a TeleClass Leader or Faculty member believes that a student is disrupting the quality of a course, they have CoachInc.com’s permission to handle the situation as they see fit including asking the student to leave a session or entire course without receiving credit. Student Conduct in Practice Labs/Practicums

• The observing evaluator's role is to help the coach become less self-conscious and a better coach. This requires the evaluator to be aware and mindful of the coach's skill level, experience, confidence and progress up to date. It is the evaluator's responsibility to deliver feedback in a way that truly supports the coach's growth and development by building upon their existing skills.

Unsolicited Email (Spam)

Student contact information via rosters is available as a resource for making contact with like-minded people, to support you in your personal growth, to connect with a study partner/class partner to deepen your learning and to meet potential Team 100 partners so you become a better resource for your clients. Students, graduates and staff appreciate the following spam-free guidelines within our community so we can continue to have an open and trusting community of personal integrity and mutual respect. Spam is simply sending out email to an individual or a group of people to promote your product or service. The key word is unsolicited. If someone hasn't requested information regarding your product or service, then please do not send such information. As an example, it is considered spam to use the Coach U/Corporate Coach U roster lists and/or the directory to send notifications or promotions regarding your business. This includes but is not limited to:

• Offers for your e-newsletter • Offers for free coaching/advice/tips • Offers for your service to coaches • Offers for your TeleClass(es) • Asking for people to go to your website • Notification about your new products, services, books, etc. • Promotion, in any way, of your business or coaching practice

The proper use of Coach U/Corporate Coach U rosters and directories includes the following:

• To contact a student in your course to buddy up • To find other coaches in your area regarding local coaching events and activities

(e.g. National Coaching Week, chapter meetings, etc.) • To share resources within your SIG or TeleClass, such as books, web sites,

programs, articles, etc. related to the subject matter at hand Non-compliance with the above stated policy may affect your student privileges and/or student status. ©Copyright 2006-2011 by CoachInc.com. TeleClass Policies and Procedures The CEP, ACP and ACCP curriculum and training are delivered solely by TeleClass, the only exception being our fast track program that is delivered live. In order to ensure a successful learning environment, we have created the highest standard of coach training and delivery. In order for our students to be successful it is their responsibility to approach their training with the utmost consideration and commitment to the coaching profession. These policies have been put in place to ensure our students and graduates, meet this high standard.

Attendance Policy

It is important for students to plan to attend all of their classes for each course. We highly discourage students from enrolling in courses when it is known in advance that one session will be missed. Students should only enroll into courses when they are confident that all sessions can be attended. Students will not be credited for a class that could not be attended due to technical difficulty on the student’s side; this includes phone problems (phone service problems including line static, equipment failures), internet problems, changes in time (daylight versus standard), lost information, schedule conflicts, incorrect international time conversions, travel delays, illness, etc. In order to receive class credit, your TeleClass Leader must be aware of your presence during each session. Your facilitator will take attendance within the first 5 minutes of class and may check attendance again at the end of the session. Students must be present no later than 5 minutes after the session begins and may not leave more than 5 minutes early to receive class credit. If you are taking a course that requires specific assignments or practice coaching in order to receive credit for the course, these requirements must be completed in their entirety. In the absence of fulfilling ANY ONE of the requirements, the entire course must be retaken. Please note that these requirements must be fulfilled on a timely basis as your facilitator is required to promptly close out the course to prevent students from being dropped from courses scheduled in the future. The Core Essentials Program (CEP), Advanced Coaching Program (ACP & ACP-T) and the Advanced Corporate Coaching Program (ACCP & ACCP-T) attendance policy is as follows:

• 4 Week CE Courses & A-Courses - You must attend at least three full classes in a 4-week series to receive credit. If you miss two or more you must re-take the entire course. In December, there are only three classes scheduled so you must attend ALL THREE (no classes can be missed). No makeup classes allowed.

Upon review and acceptance, credit for the course will be corrected. Contact [email protected] for the current fax number to use. Once 6 months has elapsed after a course drop has been recorded, petitions for course credit corrections will no longer be accepted.

Be sure to include your name, student ID, the course number, and course date & time. The faculty will then drop you when they take attendance.

Course Enrollment Policy

Core Essentials and Advanced Program Students may enroll into as many courses in their program that their schedule will comfortably allow, while being observant of pre-requisites. We want to encourage you to progress through the program at a pace that is conducive to your personal agenda. However, please note, for any students who regularly enroll and no-show in courses, don’t complete the required number of sessions or fully participate and complete assigned coursework, we will reserve the right to impose a limit, reducing the allowed number of course enrollments accordingly. Although there is no limit on the amount of courses you can take, CoachInc.com does not guarantee you will have an unlimited amount of courses to enroll into. The amount of courses a student takes each month is dependent on personal schedule and available courses that meet the student’s schedule. We ask all our students to try to be as flexible as possible with available dates and times they are able to take classes to ensure they graduate within the time allowed.

Course Pre-requisites

In some cases students are required to meet course pre-requisites before enrolling into certain courses. Each course builds off the next, therefore students will be dropped from a course 48-hours before that course is to begin if that course has a pre-requisite and they have not yet completed it. A course description is available during the enrollment process for your course, and is on the same page as the “enroll now” button. Before proceeding with enrollment, review the pre-requisites to ensure that you have met the criteria before enrolling. If you are dropped, you will receive an email indicating you have not met the pre-requisite for the course.

Practicum– Credit Requirements

If you are taking a course that requires specific assignments or practice coaching in order to receive credit for a course, these requirements must be completed in their entirety. In the absence of fulfilling ANY ONE of the requirements, the entire course must be retaken. There will be no exceptions given to any missed requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they meet all the requirements, and in the case of practice coaching, no make ups will be allowed. Practicum Credit Requirements

• Attend a minimum of six full sessions and preferably all eight. (You may only miss two classes and it’s highly recommended these not be the first two.)

• As the coach, facilitate a coaching session using as many coaching methods and skills for the application presented, as you can.

• As the client, bring along a situation to be coached on and play it in the first person so that you actually receive the coaching.

• As an observing evaluator, give students specific feedback on their coaching skills in a one-page written evaluation and send a copy to your instructor.

Important Note Regarding Practicum Credit Requirements

• Without coaching, being coached and the written evaluations, you will not receive credit for the module, even if you meet the attendance requirements. All feedback must be submitted within 24-48 hours of the observed session. Please note that these requirements must be fulfilled on a timely basis as your Faculty member is required to promptly close out the course to prevent students from being dropped from courses scheduled in the future.

Student Conduct in Practicum’s as an Observing Evaluator

• The observing evaluator's role is to help the coach become less self-conscious and a better coach. This requires the evaluator to be aware and mindful of the coach's skill level, experience, confidence and progress up to date. It is the evaluator's responsibility to deliver feedback in a way that truly supports the coach's growth and development by building upon their existing skills.

• Before delivering suggestions for improvement, it is always helpful to start with positive comments including what the coach did to receive a good response from his or her coachee.

Please Note: Faculty will not provide letters of recommendation for ICF certification to students based on listening during a class, even when it is a practicum.

TeleClass Cancellations

All TeleClasses must have at least ten and no more than twenty-three participants or 16 for practice labs in order to ensure the best possible learning environment for everyone. Our training department reserves the right to cancel any course that does not meet this criterion. Courses with fewer than ten participants are subject to cancellation. Faculty may change without prior notice due to scheduling realities and in the rare event that a faculty member cannot be found for a particular course we will have no choice but to cancel that course.

20

Page 21: Student Policies and Procedures Polic… · This student manual is a guide to policies, procedures and general information about CoachInc.com and the student experience. The information

If you are unable to take a TeleClass due to a cancellation, please be assured that the course will be offered again in upcoming scheduling. In order to ensure that cancellations do not affect your training, it’s highly recommended that students have a wide variety of available times in their schedule to take courses. If a course does get cancelled students will receive a confirmation by email that this has happened. We do our best to cancel courses at least 7 days before the class is to start. It is the student’s responsibility to find and enroll in another course if a cancellation takes place.

TeleClass Confidentiality

To ensure a safe and rewarding learning experience for every TeleClass participant, it is important that everyone maintains strict confidentiality. All information disclosed is to be kept inside the course; please do not share or disclose any information related to a person or business (names, situation, company, etc.) delivered in a TeleClass under any circumstance. To ensure the utmost confidentiality students cannot:

• Record courses. The recording of CoachInc.com TeleClasses is strictly prohibited.

• Use three-way calling. Three-way calling is prohibited; you cannot use three-way calling to add anyone into a CoachInc.com TeleClass.

Ensuring the safety of the virtual classroom means that individuals are free to share personal information about themselves or those they coach in order to practice real world coaching situations. Anyone found to be in violation of the TeleClass confidentiality policies, disciplinary action may be taken, which may include dismissal from your training program with no reimbursement of tuition.

TeleClass Etiquette

How to participate in CoachInc.com TeleClasses:

• Before dialing into a bridge, please disable your call waiting. This can be accomplished most often for residents of US & Canada by dialing *70 or *80 before dialing into the bridge, depending on your service provider. All other international students should contact their service provider.

• Always state your name first (e.g. “This is Jane…”)

Page 22: Student Policies and Procedures Polic… · This student manual is a guide to policies, procedures and general information about CoachInc.com and the student experience. The information

• Fully participate. What you have to say is often what others need to hear. If you

are silent or are concerned that what you have to say isn’t worthwhile, you may hold everyone else back.

• Speak in 20-second sound bites. Make your point succinctly, share a quick story,

ask a question. With 15-25 participants on a typical TeleClass, please be sensitive to each person’s need to participate.

• Please use your Mute Button when you are not speaking, this will help to reduce

background noise.

• Share what you’ve learned. During TeleClasses, you’ll be learning new information, tools and concepts. It helps you and everyone on the call to articulate what you’ve learned and how it will help in your practice and your life.

• Take notes. Some of the content of the TeleClass is developed during the class

call. Taking notes ensures that you will have this additional content for future reference. You will find yourself collecting "gems and pearls" of wisdom from other participants, recommendations for reading which is directly related to course content and invaluable tips and pointers for real world coaching. You will reference these again and again in your work as a personal, business or corporate coach.

• Enjoy yourself. These calls are a chance to learn key points, review what you’ve

studied, get to know your classmates across the world, and learn from each other’s experiences. You’ll learn more if you’re relaxed and able to “get” versus merely understand the information.

TeleClass Evaluations

We have an evaluation system that assists in continually raising our ongoing standards of excellence. For this reason, it is important that you fill out the evaluations at the end of every class. And, most importantly we ask that you be candid. This is a safe community and feedback is appreciated. Also, if you don't understand something, or have a challenge with something that occurs DURING the class please speak up and address in the moment. If not during the actual session itself, then perhaps in an email to the faculty afterwards. Part of coaching competency is direct and honest communication. All courses (other than practicums) will have an evaluation associated with it. You will have two weeks from the end of the course to complete your evaluation.

TeleClass Schedule

For the convenience of our students, the TeleClass schedule is posted 6 months in advance. It is the student’s responsibility to review the TeleClass schedule regularly for any changes that may occur such as adding or canceling of courses.

22

Page 23: Student Policies and Procedures Polic… · This student manual is a guide to policies, procedures and general information about CoachInc.com and the student experience. The information

The TeleClass schedule will include the Course Name, Course Date, Course Time (US Eastern Time) and Faculty Name. If there is no faculty currently assigned to lead a course the schedule will indicate this by a TBA, to be announced status. A faculty member will be assigned to this course as soon as possible. If a faculty member cannot be assigned, we will have no choice than to cancel the course. This rarely happens, and only in extreme cases. Although we try our best to accommodate the TeleClass scheduling needs of all our students, we do not take individual requests for courses. It is up to the student to make the space needed in order to attend the courses needed for completion.

TeleClass Schedule Changes

Although this rarely happens, the TeleClass schedule is subject to change. If CoachInc.com deems it necessary to drop a course due to low enrollment, you shall be notified of this change via email. We apologize for the inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding.

TeleClass Phone Costs

Our curriculum is delivered by TeleClass, therefore we encourage our students to research and obtain the best possible long distance rate available. Students are responsible for any long distance charges incurred while taking our courses.

Teleclass Phone Methods

You may use any of the following methods to dial into the bridgelines:

• Landlines (most reliable method) • Cell phones • Voice over IP (VOIP) such as Skype, Vonage, etc.

For cell/mobile phones you must be SURE you are in an area where reception is excellent. Various forms of internet telephony may cause challenges on a bridge line, so you must be sure to test services for clarity and connection. Our bridges seem to work very well with SKYPE as long as the internet connection and bandwidth is excellent. Please review the Teleclass Bridgeline FAQ at the end of this manual for information on using Skype.

In the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, there are often local numbers that can be used when dialing into the bridge lines. To check on availability in your area please go to http://nconnects.com/Local/ . This site is updated regularly and the numbers will change so please check back often for additions and changes. Please note: If you are using any method of connecting that causes echos, static, or excessive noise, your instructor and other students may ask you to drop the call and dial in using another phone line or method. If you are asked to drop the call and you don't call back on a better connection, you will not get credit for the class.

Waiting Lists When a course has been filled students will have the option of placing their name on a waiting list. We encourage you to use this option, as it indicates to us the need for additional courses. When the waiting list reaches a certain number of students (determined by the Training Department) another course will be scheduled at the same date and same time as the original course whenever possible. Additional courses added based on waiting lists are not guaranteed to run if minimum enrollment numbers are not reached. To be added to a waiting list, enroll as you normally would (in the Student Center, click on Available Courses, then the course, then the Enroll Now button. Click on the section desired. If the course is full, you will automatically be enrolled on the waiting list when you click the “add to waiting list” button). Remember that if you enroll on a waiting list, you must leave a space open on your schedule in order to be added to the course if your name comes up. In these cases, we recommend that students take no more than 2 or 3 courses per month.

Client Coaching Hours (CoachInc.com Definition)

For purposes of individual credentialing for CoachInc.com designations, a client coaching hour is 60 minutes coaching time with a person who has hired you as a coach, with whom you have a formal coaching agreement, and who you coach rather than providing any other service such as consulting or therapy. If you perform coaching and other services for a client, you may only count the actual time spent coaching toward certification. You may not count time providing other services. Additionally, time spent coaching during CoachInc.com courses or in conversations with coaching colleagues (such as buddies and peers) will not apply towards graduation and certification. Only submit hours for graduation and certification purposes for professional coaching relationships where there is a formal coaching agreement.

pass. If you do not pass, you may re-take the test as many times as necessary to achieve a passing mark. Your most recent score will be the one saved. Please read the test instructions carefully before taking the tests, so you have a better understanding of the unique scoring process. Required Tests: For former program students (CTP and CCP), only required courses have had tests: A. Modules 1-15 or CCU-01 through CCU-15 for CCP B. C1-C36 or most of the CU-100 through CU-500 series (not the Practice Labs) for CTP For new students (after Nov. 1, 2004), ONLY the Core Essentials Program, CEP has tests. There are no tests for the Advanced Programs (courses beginning with A-) Helpful hints for taking your tests:

Core Essentials Program Exam Effective January 1, 2009 students enrolled on or after January 1, 2009 will be required to complete the Core Essentials Final Exam in order to graduate from the CEP. Students must receive a score of 80% or greater in order to pass. The exam is located in the Course Test area of the Student Center and you may take and re-take the exam until you receive a passing score. The CEP Final Exam consists of 127 true/false and multiple choice questions related to the content learned in the CEP. If you are a student who enrolled before January 1, 2009 your graduation requirements will remain the same and you will not be required to complete the CEP Final Exam, although you are encouraged to use the exam as a review tool if you wish.

Faculty

We stand out from other ICF-Accredited coach training programs because most of our international faculty are ICF credentialed at the PCC or MCC level. Our faculty members are CoachInc.com graduates as well as seasoned coaches and are leading courses from experience rather than just theory. Additionally, most are also Coachinc's Professional Mentor Coaches (PMC).

TeleClass Bridge FAQ What do I do if I have trouble accessing the bridge line? First, try the emergency bridge numbers for the class. If you still can't connect, please use the final emergency backup number listed on the roster +1.206.701.8388 and then enter the pin number given for your class. Alternately, you can use SKYPE (see information below).

Can I use a cell phone or internet telephony? Yes you can. For SKYPE protocol, see below.

Why is my dial in number the same as a different class a friend is taking at the same time? The phone numbers to reach the bridge lines can be the same. However it is the pin number that is unique to each class, and is what opens a specific bridge line.

Are there local numbers so I don’t have to dial long distance? In the United States, Canada and now the United Kingdom, there are often local numbers that can be used when dialing into the bridge lines. To check on availability in your area please go to http://nconnects.com/Local/ . This site is updated regularly and the numbers will change so please check back often for additions and changes. At this time there are not any numbers outside of the referenced regions, however our provider has plans to expand into other areas.

Can I use SKYPE to call directly into a bridge line number? Yes, you can use SKYPE to call from your computer to the actual bridge line phone number. However be sure that you have the most recent version of SKYPE so that the pin pad is available to you and you can enter the class pin number after connecting.

For more information, feel free to visit; http://instantteleseminar.com/skype/

Can I use SKYPE to call computer to bridge system? Yes, the bridges can be accessed using SKYPE. The protocol is easy: Using the most updated version of skype (meaning one where you can access a pin pad after connected, to enter the pin), friend and call: joinconference. Once on the line, enter the pin number and you will be connected. It is important to note, that a good, solid internet connection will create a quality connection using SKYPE. With a connection that is not strong, using SKYPE can cause challenges in connection, noise and delays in voice. Please be sure that if using this access, that there is a viable connection. Also, this is an alternative option to connecting to your class, in the event there is a challenge connecting with the actual bridge dial in phone number. With a strong internet connection, dialling via this protocol with SKYPE generally will give you a quick and clean connection to the bridge technology.

*0 - Tells the caller what commands they can use *3 - Decreases the caller's microphone volume - in case they are too loud *4 - Increases the caller's microphone volume - in case they are too quiet *6 - Mutes the caller. *7 – Un-mutes the caller

How do I report Challenges I am having on bridges? Remember, should you have any kind of significant challenge with a bridge, use the normal protocol and send for the [email protected] Then please fill out the trouble ticket and email to [email protected]

Can I use calling cards to access the bridges? Yes, you may use calling cards. However, we have found that some calling cards don’t work well with the system. We are not clear as to why, however, it seems to cause some individuals challenges. If you have difficulty connecting, simply change to a different calling card provider and the problem may be solved.
