Welcome
Visitors are to report to the main office immediately upon arrival to campus. They will be given a visitor’s
badge to wear while on campus. All visitors must receive permission to be on campus.
Teacher Conferences
Anyone who would like to meet with a teacher may do so by making an appointment during school business hours.
Business hours are 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, when school is in session. Please call (831) 385-
4400 to make an appointment.
Student Information/Change of Address
If your last name, street address, telephone number or emergency contact phone numbers change at any time during
the school year, please notify the school office immediately. This is very important in order to keep records up-to-
date and to contact a parent or guardian in case of an emergency.
Money and Valuable Articles
Please do not bring large amounts of money or items of value to school. Articles should be in the possession of the
owner at all times. The school cannot be responsible for lost or stolen money or valuables.
Fire/Emergency Drills
The signal for fire drills is a series of short siren blasts. When the signal sounds, students are to leave their room in an
orderly manner and go to their designated area at least 50 feet from buildings and clear of all roads. Specific routes
and procedures will be given for each class. Students are to follow the directions of the person in charge and remain
quiet. When clearance is given, students are to return to their room in an orderly and safe manner. Other emergency
plans will be discussed in the classroom and drills are conducted on a regular basis.
Emergency Parent Pick-Up Information
In the event of an emergency, parents are to remain calm and report to the CPMS office or to a table set up outside the
office to check their student out of school. Parents should not take their student from campus without checking
him/her out through school personnel.
Bicycles/Scooters, Skateboards, Skates and Roller blades
For safety reasons, bicycles must be walked on the school grounds at all times. A parking area is provided for
bicycles. All bicycles should be locked and registered, and riders should wear appropriate helmets, as required by
State law. The school district is not responsible for bicycles parked on campus. Skateboards, skates, scooters, and
roller blades are not permitted on campus. This rule applies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
Administering Medication at School
Students are not allowed to have any medication at school. If you need to take any kind of medication at school, a
note from a physician must be brought to the school office by parents or legal guardians. The medication and the note
with instructions for administering the medication will be given to the health clerk or designee. The health clerk or
designee will administer the medication to the student while on campus.
Passes
Students may leave the classroom only with a pass issued by the teacher or with an office summons. Passes will be
given only for urgent reasons.
Cell Phones Cells phones must be turned off during school hours and shall not be disruptive. Cell phones that ring during
class and are used during school hours, will be confiscated and returned to the child’s parent. Repeat
“offenders” will have the phone held until the end of the academic year. (Failure to turn them off, texting friends,
calling home, checking the time, loaning phones to friends who subsequently lose them to authorities, or having
them taken from backpacks does not exempt the owner from responsibility for the phone or its subsequent use.)
4
Telephone
Except in emergencies, students are not to use the classroom or office phones without permission. Please make
arrangements for after-school pick-up, appointments, after-school care, etc. before school begins and make sure
students know where and what they are to do when school ends.
Toys-Games
Toys, games and any electronic device are not part of the school curriculum and as such must not be brought to school
without administrative approval. Bringing such items to school is entirely at the student’s own risk. Time is too
valuable to be spent on the search and recovery of toys; leave them at home.
Deliveries to students
Except in emergencies, deliveries to students will not be made, particularly flowers, balloons, etc. The office will not
be responsible for timely deliveries, and will not accept deliveries to students from vendors. The office staff is very
busy and will not interrupt instructional time to inform students of personal deliveries such as lunches, PE clothes, etc.
All students are to either bring their lunch with them to school or purchase a lunch at school. No lunch deliveries will
be honored.
Homework
In accordance with King City Union School District policy, homework may be assigned daily but is not required to be
assigned. Daily homework should not take more than 70-80 minutes to complete. If your student is requiring more
time to complete, please schedule an appointment with your students teacher to discuss. A Student Planner is
required of each student at CPMS and students are further required to record homework assignments in their
student planners. Planners are provided for students at the beginning of the year. Parents can monitor student
homework by checking the planner on a regular basis. A regular study time each day and an assigned place to do
homework will help students become organized and more successful at CPMS.
Homework Requests
Please contact teachers directly to request homework for all absences.
Affection on Campus
Students are responsible for showing maturity and respect in their relationships with all students. Please keep your
hands to yourself at school. Holding hands, hugging, having arms around one another and other overt displays of
affection are inappropriate behaviors at school. Repeated displays of affection will require a parent conference and be
subject to disciplinary action.

P.E.
P.E. clothes are required for 7th and 8th grade students. Each student must have a solid light blue t-shirt;
each student may choose to wear shorts or sweatpants. The gym shorts must have an elastic waist, mid
thigh to upper knee length, in solid black. The sweatpants must be solid grey, with elastic waist, and fit
appropriately for activity. No pockets on any PE clothing. Socks and supportive tennis shoes are to be worn
everyday to class. Tennis shoes must be safe for activity, have laces tied appropriately for activity (lace
tightly and tie on the outside of the shoe) or Velcro fasteners – no “slip on” or “skater” shoes allowed.
Orders for uniforms will be taken at the beginning of the year, or a student may purchase equivalent clothes from
other sources.
Also be advised that a note is required from home if the student will not be able to participate for the day. If you miss
more than three (3) consecutive days of P.E., you are required to have a note from your physician.

-Cheating during exams
-Falsifying documents/Forgery
Extracurricular Activities
A. Athletic Eligibility and Conduct In keeping with the philosophy that excellent academic standards go hand-in-hand with excellent athletic
performance and that participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege, the following rules are to be
followed:
1. Each CPMS athlete will conduct himself/herself with dignity in defeat and grace in victory.
2. As a member of a team, his/her actions on and off the field will strive to bring credit to his/her
teammates, coaches, school, community and family.
3. Any athlete violating this code will be in jeopardy of losing his/her eligibility to participate in sports
and/or extracurricular activities.
4. Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to be able to participate in athletics and/or
extracurricular activities.
5. Students may receive no more than one “F” in their most recent grading period.
6. Athletes are not allowed to come to practice or a game on any day that they are suspended.
7. Any athlete suspended for more than three (3) days will be let go from the team.
8. A student must attend at least four (4) periods during the day in order to participate in a game, attend
practice or any other activity (including dances).
9. Any athlete involved anywhere, on or off campus, in the use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco will be cut
from the team. (“Chew” is included in the tobacco category.)
10. Students must have no school related offenses of any kind involving a controlled substance during the
school year in order to participate in any extracurricular activities and end-of year activities
B. Athletic Responsibility
Athletes are responsible for being at all practices and games. Exceptions are: illness, doctor’s appointment or
family commitment, all of which should be verified by parent contact with coach. If an athlete misses a
practice or game without acceptable excuse, they will be warned once, then upon second unexcused absence,
may be let go from the team.
C. Eligibility for “Try Outs” prior to the formation of teams is required using current grading period.
D. Travel
All students must travel to and from school activities using district-approved transportation when it is
provided. In the event that a student finds it necessary to return home with his/her parents/guardians, a
written request must be submitted to the administration/coach prior to leaving the out-of-town activity. The
principal/coach will either deny or approve the request at his/her discretion.
E. Dances and Athletic Event Conduct
All school rules/dress codes apply. Students are expected to remain at the dance until the conclusion of the
event. Students cannot leave without administrator permission. Parents should pick up their students promptly
at the end of the dance. CPMS dances are for CPMS students only.
F. Textbooks and School Equipment
Students are issued textbooks and supplies in order to perform their tasks at school. These items, as well as
library books and PE locks are on loan to students. The replacement cost for lost, stolen, damaged or
destroyed items are the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian. Grades and transcripts will be
7
withheld until payment or lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed school property is received. Students will not be
able to participate in end of year activities until all equipment is returned or paid for.
G. Eligibility for CPMS Promotion, Promotion Dance and End-of-the-Year Activities
8th grade students will be allowed to participate in the promotion exercise, promotion dance and end-of-
the-year activities only if they meet the following standards:
Promotion Requirements:
•No more than 4 “F” total on report cards for the school year.
•No major suspensions (5 days) during the 4th quarter.
•No school related offense of any kind involving a controlled substance or alcohol during the school year
8th Grade Trip Requirements:
Must meet all promotion requirements and
no more than six (6) total days of suspension during the school year
8th Grade Dance Requirements:
Must meet all promotion requirements and
Must have fewer than 10 unexcused absences during the school year, and CANNOT be on the tardy
contract during the 4th quarter to be eligible for the promotion dance.
Standards of behavior for 6th and 7th grade student participation in end of year activities will be determined using the
same promotion, trip, and dance requirements
Attendance Policy
It is the responsibility of parents/guardians to see that children six to eighteen years old attend school. A student’s
absence from school shall require a satisfactory explanation, within 3 school days of the first day of absence, from a
parent or guardian, either in person, by written note, or by telephone between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at 385-4400.
Upon returning to school after an absence, the student will receive a readmit slip from the office and shall be
permitted to return to class. The administration will determine whether absences are excused or unexcused.
Students without notes, or whose parents have not phoned to excuse their absence, will be considered truant and may
be assigned detention, Saturday School, and or referred to the District Attorney for truancy. Students are required to
make up assignments missed during any excused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain assignments
and tests missed during an excused absence.
Students who plan to be absent for an extended period of time should seek approval for the absence by presenting a
note from home to the Principal or his/her designee who will then verify with the parent and approve or disapprove
the absence. Any student shall be allowed to complete assignments and tests missed during an excused absence.
Students with excessive unexcused absences (10 absences per grading period) may be given a failing grade and not
receive credit for the class. Students on suspension have the right to make-up work.
The following procedures must be applied in assigning a failing grade:
1. Teachers will provide the attendance clerk an accurate, daily record of absences that will be
maintained in the school attendance computer.
2. The pupil and the parents/guardians shall be given an opportunity to meet with
principal/designee to explain absences.
3. In the event that a student accumulates excessive tardies and/or unexcused absences, the
Student and his/her parents may be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for further
action.
4. A failing grade assigned to the pupil on the basis of excessive unexcused absences shall be
indicated by a notation on the student’s grade report and record.
8
5. Student may be referred for a Student Study Team
*Students may be excused from school to obtain confidential medical services without the consent of the
student’s parent/guardian (cf. 5145.6 – BP 5113 (a))
*When a student has had 14 absences in the school year for illness verified by methods listed above, any
further absence for illness must be accompanied by a note from a physician. (BP 5113 (c))
*Students are classified as truant if absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one
school year, or tardy or absent for more than any thirty (30) minute period during the school day without
a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year (Education Code 48260).
Students who arrive late for school must have a similar explanation from a parent or guardian, or they will
receive after school detention.
Tardies: A student is tardy if he/she is not at an assigned learning station with books and materials when
class begins. More than 5 tardies in a quarter will result in a tardy contract. Once on the contract, any
subsequent tardy will result in a detention. Failure to report to assigned detention will result in further
discipline.
King City Union School District
Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS)
The schools in King City Union School District provide a balance of Positive Behavior Intervention
and Supports (PBIS) along with clear, concise discipline policies. Research has shown that the
implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other
positive strategies, is ineffective. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for
following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur and then
responding negatively. PBIS, as described below, is a school-wide system of support that includes
proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behavior to create a
positive school environment.
The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the
norm. PBIS employs strategies for introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior
throughout the school environment in classroom and non-classroom settings. Schools focus on
creating and sustaining three levels of supports for all youth by making positive behavior better
understood and misbehavior less effective, efficient, and relevant. Some of the strategies employed
by PBIS include training for all students in expected behaviors throughout the school; all staff
acknowledging and reinforcing students for positive behavior; retraining students throughout the year
and as needed in positive expectations; and positive targeted interventions for students who may have
difficulty maintaining positive behavior.
Within the PBIS system, each school maintains a PBIS Team. This team focuses on creating and
implementing the PBIS strategies listed above as well as keeping data on student conduct, and
utilizing the data to modify the program and/or add support for students who may be struggling with
positive conduct. A big part of this program is that all of our school sites regularly recognize students
for positive behavior. Although the system of recognition may vary by site, all of our students are
being instructed in how to BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE, and BE RESPECTFUL. Our goal is that
students will be provided the strategies, supports, and/or resources to meet their social-emotional
needs in addition to attaining academic success in an environment that is friendly, respectful, positive,
safe, and conducive to learning.
9
Student Discipline Code
The student discipline code applies to all students attending school in the King City Union School District including the
following circumstances: (1) While on any school grounds; (2) while going to or coming from any school; (3) during the
lunch period, whether on or off the school campus; and (4) during, going to or coming from a school- sponsored activity.
Where appropriate, discipline should be progressive. This means that a student’s first violation will usually merit a
consequence of a lesser degree than subsequent violations, taking into account all factors relevant to the severity of the
current violation. Except where specified by Education Code Section 48900.5, a student may be suspended only when
there has been a determination that other means of correction have failed to bring about proper conduct or that the
student’s presence causes a danger to persons.
The student discipline code also applies to: (1) all school- related trips and excursions approved according to governing
board standards; and (2) optional District educational programs such as: (a) summer school; (b) after-school programs and
(c) pre-kindergarten or preschool programs. At the principal’s discretion, a student with documented discipline problems
not requiring expulsion may be removed from the remainder of an optional educational program. Before a removal occurs,
the parent will receive a written notice and an opportunity to be heard in front of the principal or principal’s designee.
Consequences and Interventions Understanding that consequences and interventions represent “teachable moments” is fundamental to a positive approach
to discipline. The goal of progressive consequences and interventions is the teaching of pro-social behavior. Progressive
consequences seek accountability and behavioral change. Prevention of negative behavior occurs by helping students learn
from their mistakes. Essential to progressive discipline is helping students who have engaged in unacceptable behavior to:
1. Understand why the behavior is unacceptable and the harm it has caused
2. Understand what they could have done differently in the same situation
3. Take responsibility for their action
4. Be given the opportunity to learn pro-social strategies and skills to use in the future
5. Understand the progression of more stringent consequences if the behavior reoccurs
Consequences and interventions are most effective with students when they deal directly with the problem, in a way that is
fair and impartial. These procedures were developed to establish a uniform discipline code for the District; it is expected
that this code would be followed and consistently enforced throughout the King City Union School District. All District staff
who are authorized to impose disciplinary actions are expected to do so in a prompt, fair and lawful manner and to place
emphasis on the student’s ability to grow in self-discipline. To correct the behavior of any student who is subject to
discipline, the principal/designee should, to the extent allowed by law, first use an alternative(s) to suspension. Except for
single acts of a grave nature or multiple offense, suspension or expulsion is used only when other means of correction have
failed to bring about proper conduct or the student’s presence causes a continuing danger to persons. All District staff are
to assure due process for students. When choosing interventions and consequences for a student’s behavior, District staff
should consider the following factors:
1. Age, health, maturation and disability or special education status of the student
2. Student’s prior conduct and record of behavior
3. Student’s understanding of the impact of their behavior
4. Student’s willingness to repair the harm caused by their behavior
5. Seriousness of the behavior offense and the degree of harm caused
6. Impact of the incident on overall school community
7. Whether the student’s violation threatened the safety of any student or staff member
8. The likelihood that a lessor intervention or consequence would adequately address the violation
When students are disruptive or act inappropriately, and following consideration of the factors previously mentioned,
District staff shall determine the level of consequence and intervention needed to assist the student in bringing about
proper conduct. Consequences should be paired with an appropriate intervention. The following levels of interventions
and consequences shall be applied in a logical, appropriate, and consistent manner.

Examples of Administrative Removal ResponsesLevel 3 consequences and interventions involve short-term removal of a student from the school environment due to the severity of
the behavior or because Level 1 and Level 2 consequences have failed to bring about proper conduct. Level 1 and Level 2
interventions may still be applied in addition to those listed in Level 3. The duration of the suspension is to be limited as much as
practicable while adequately addressing the behavior
Level 3
These consequences and interventions aim to teach correct behavior so students may learn and demonstrate safe, respectful, and
responsible behavior. Teachers are encouraged to try a variety of teaching and classroom management strategies. Below are possible
consequences and interventions that may be used.
Examples of Classroom Management Responses
Levels of Response - Consequences and Interventions
Level 1
Examples of Administrative ResponsesThese consequences and interventions, used in response to an office discipline referral, aim to correct behavior by stressing the
seriousness of the behavior while keeping the student in school. Interventions often involve support staff and aim to engage the
student's support system to ensure successful learning, consistency, and change the conditions that contribute to the student's
inappropriate or disruptive behavior. Below are possible consequences and interventions that may be used. Level 1 interventions
may still apply.
Level 2
Examples of Administrative Removal ResponsesLevel 4 involves the removal of the student from the school environment due to the severity of the behavior or because Level 1,2, or 3
consequences and interventions have failed to bring about proper conduct. These consequences focus on protecting the safety of the
school community and ending self-destructive and dangerous behavior. Level 1, 2, and 3 interventions may still be applied, if
applicable.
