Welcome to Indiana State University, where learning is personal and diversity is a way of life. We educate to graduate, and to make you life-long learners; critical thinkers. This important resource is a start of that process. This Campus Life Guide is designed to introduce programs and services made available to you –our students. We are delighted that you are seeking ways to be engaged and get connected with your university.

Within the Division of Student Affairs we have a motto, “Students FIRST,” which means that we place you in the center and at the core of everything we do. We are committed to your development, growth and learning.

We have enjoyed many celebrated moments already this Fall. During Welcome Week, thousands of new students participated in Convocation, were able to March Through the Arch, and relaxed during Sycamore Sunday. Many of you celebrated during the Fountain Party, learned and were entertained during Maria Falzone’s Sex Rules program at the Hulman Center, and even joined classmates for our inaugural Movie on the President’s Lawn.

These types of events will continue through Club Month with opportunities for all students to explore the many co-curricular offerings available at Indiana State University. I encourage you to participate in our signature Homecoming events, attend an icon and legacy program, join a student organization, and participate in leadership development initiatives.

Student leaders and advisors of the Greek organizations at Indiana State say becoming part of a fraternity or sorority is a positive and life changing experience.

Each year, about 12 percent of the student body at ISU is involved in fraternity and sorority life said Bo Mantooth, director of ISU Fraternity and Sorority Life. Involvement gives students the opportunity to build lasting friendships while serving the community in which they live.

Andrew Finley, a junior communication major and a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, looks forward to the beginning of the school year when he and his Greek brothers lend a hand to assist incoming students.

“It’s an opportunity to be a role model and a friend to a new student who may not know anyone on campus,” Finley said.

And really, that’s what Greek involvement is all about, says Associate Dean of Students

with small group gatherings, social and service events and information sessions.

Council, has been involved with Greek life for three years and loves the oppor tunities it gives him.

“With over a dozen fraternities at Indiana State, our Greek system can offer many great aspects to students, such as, leadership, community service and most importantly academic success,” Voelker said.

Students who gain leadership skills through their Greek affiliations often end up leading other student organizations, Mantooth said.

“Ideal candidates for Greek life are people who have their priorities in line,” he said. “We look for our Greek life students to excel academically with a minimum 2.5 grade point average and to be socially responsible.”

Greeks at ISU also have a major impact on the community of Terre Haute.

“Last year, 22,079 hours of community service was recorded between our fraternities and sororities,” Mantooth said.

Fraternities and sororities work hard

to raise money for national and local charities, said senior sport management and marketing major Joe Zeedyk, a Sigma Phi Epsilon member who serves as vice president of judicial affairs on the Interfraternity Council.

Charities that have benefitted from the work of ISU Greeks include Terre Haute Children’s Museum, Muscular Dystrophy Association and Catholic Charities, he said.

Students who want to explore the possibility of becoming a member of a Greek organization will have the opportunity to do so during the next few weeks as the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association are working now to coordinate this year’s fall recruitment, Moore said.

“They facilitate a program and structure which allows potential members to be exposed to the diverse chapters ISU has,” Moore said.

While Greek visibility is high during the first few weeks of the academic year, Voelker said it’s the goal of the Greek organizations to continue that push

year-round.The recruitment process, which

is sometimes labeled with an unfair reputation, isn’t one that should scare away students, Zeedyk said.

“I like to continually push my brothers towards principles of virtue, diligence, and overall brotherly love when it comes to recruitment,” he said.

year! We have been working hard all summer to plan some awesome events and help transform this university into the school of your dreams! As I’m sure all of you have heard once in your lifetime already, college is the greatest four years of your life. � at statement could not be truer now that you are o� cially a Sycamore! ISU is full of opportunities, and to make these four years the best they can be, school involvement is key.

� ere are many di� erent ways for you to get involved with Indiana State through SGA, such as the Sycamore Leadership Coalition, which is for freshman wanting to get directly involved with SGA, the student body Senate, and � e Forest, which will be supporting our athletic teams all year! SGA serves as the voice of and advocate for the student body to the administration, the faculty, and the sta� at Indiana State. Simply put, we aim to serve you as best we can and help ensure that you have the positive and rewarding Sycamore Experience that you deserve.

Any freshman wanting to get involved with SGA should seek out the Sycamore Leadership Coalition - a premiere leadership organization for � rst year students which will help you to become a senator or executive committee member of SGA in the future. SLC will allow you to be a part of the voice of this university that helps all students to gain a better experience at this University.

� e Forest is one of the largest organizations on our campus, which supports all of our Sycamore athletic teams. � e Forest is an excellent opportunity to get involved quickly and meet other students on campus. � e Forest gives you a chance to be more than just a fan. Forest members not only get priority seating and a chance to win lots of free ISU gear, but also get the opportunity to star in various promo videos as well as the opportunity to meet some of the players!

We know college can be a scary thing, but just understand that you’re not on your own and no matter what the issue is, we are here for YOU! Don’t be afraid of change! Change is the only constant in life, and as we accept that, making the transition to college and starting the next chapter in your life becomes that much easier! � rough his reprinted quotes in major U.S. newspapers and magazines for decades, he had it right. Success in life doesn’t just magically happen; it’s achieved through personal vision and determination.

Achieving your college degree is among the more challenging tasks you can take on in life. � is is particularly so because you have to delay grati� cation for four years and aren’t required by law to do it. But don’t be mistaken—the average college graduate will make $1 million more in a lifetime than a non-graduate counterpart and be much less likely to be unemployed.

Maybe butter� ies abound as you think about the reading, the papers and the tests that are coming now that you are here. Maybe you are missing friends and family from home or wonder how you are going to balance working and college. � ose are reasonable things to be concerned about, but do not let them consume you. You were admitted to college because ISU believes you have what it takes to be successful and have the ability to tackle the challenges that await.

What is great about ISU is that

we de� ne excellence as a university by who is included and the kinds of experiences and support students receive here, not by who is excluded.

I am o� en asked my advice on being successful in college. I’ve honed the list to eight simple things:

Go to Class—8 a.m. comes early; 7 p.m. comes late. Nothing is more important than going to class. Your academic performance depends on it.

Ask a Question—Raise your hand in class. Post a question in Blackboard that makes your learning active and is the elixir that endears you to your professor.

Ask for Help—Helping you to help yourself is our job; but, you have to ask for help. � ere is no shame in seeking a tutor or saying you don’t understand.

Listen a Lot—� ere is enormous diversity at ISU, but to bene� t from it you have to � rst seek understanding before being understood.
