George S. EcclesThe University of Utah is proud to honor the legacy of George S. Eccles (1900-1982) through the naming of the new student

life center. The George S. Eccles Student Life Center recognizes not only the generous lead gift for the new center from the

George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, but also George's own long-standing interest and participation in sports of

many kinds, and his contagious enthusiasm that encouraged others to share his love of outdoor recreation.

A son of pioneering Utah industrialist David Eccles and his wife, Ellen Stoddard Eccles, George grew up in Logan, Utah.

While he began his college education in his hometown at Utah State University, he later moved to New York City where

he completed his degree at Columbia University School of Business in 1922. George Eccles was CEO of First Security

Corporation from 1945-82, and a leading figure in the banking industry in Utah and the nation for more than four

decades. An active and generous civic leader and major benefactor, his charitable works and interests continue today

through his foundation.

The support of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation has enriched innumerable areas of the University of

Utah, including other sports-related entities such as the George S. Eccles Tennis Center, Rice-Eccles Stadium, and Ute

football, basketball, skiing and tennis programs, among others. Mr. and Mrs. Eccles were sports enthusiasts and athletes

who loved skiing, skating, swimming, tennis and golf, as well as other outdoor activities. They were involved in Utah's

earliest efforts to bring the Olympics to the state, and the support of their foundation was vital to the overall success of

the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Utah.

The George S. Eccles Student Life Center will foster student success and

achievement for decades to come by providing a state-of-the-art venue to

enrich healthy bodies and minds, promote active lifestyles, and foster the spirit

of camaraderie and competition that Mr. and Mrs. Eccles so enjoyed.

Serving as a modern campus commons, the nearly 190,000 square foot George S. Eccles Student Life Center will offer a space where the U’s “creative doer” culture can soar to new heights. While participating in one of the Center’s many preventive health program offerings, students will discover their workout companions are a wide mix of majors studying an array of subjects from paleoenvironments in Range Creek Canyon to logic in the 21st century.

At the George S. Eccles Student Life Center, students will have the experiences and create meaningful friendships that increase their sense of community and enrich their education.

ENGAGE: COMMIT TING TO HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Situated on the Wasatch Front, the University of Utah has a vantage point like no other and the George S. Eccles Student Life Center will serve as students’ gateway to Utah’s breathtaking natural beauty. Through the Outdoor Adventures Program, students will discover activities ranging from canyoneering to exploring the wilds of Utah in one of the dozens of Cooperative Adventure Trips.

Whether making friends in the fitness center, having fun in an Aqua Zumba class, or getting personalized nutritional counseling in the wellness center, students will reap the many rewards of a healthy lifestyle and be motivated to maintain a lifetime of good health habits.

Students who use recreational facilities have higher success rates in college, higher retention rates, and higher grade point averages. The creation of the George S. Eccles Student Life Center recognizes that a successful education is intimately linked to the well-being of the whole student. The Center will help students stay on track to graduation and become the well-rounded inventors, writers, and researchers they aspire to be.

Slated to open December 2014, George S. Eccles Student Life Center highlights include:• 184,000 square feet of recreation space

along with a cafe, study nooks, and group meeting space

• Three Pools

• Four Fitness Class Studios

• Five Sport Courts

• 15,000 Square Foot Fitness Center

• Running Track

• Outdoor Adventures Program

• Wellness Studio

• Climbing and Bouldering Walls

The Center was designed by MHTN Architects and Hastings+Chivetta to qualify for Silver LEED certification.

Thank you to the members of the Student Life Center Campaign Committee for their commitment to the

well-being of students at the University of Utah. Their encouragement and support were instrumental in making

this dream come true.
