29 October 2015

Dear Parents

Student leadership and service are pivotal aspects of our philosophical commitment to the personal growth of young Grammarians. We never cease to be amazed how willing our students are to commit to assisting charitable causes and people less privileged than ourselves. Fortunately, we have staff who are equally generous and act as wonderful role models across both the Annandale and North Ward campuses.

Earlier this year, the Interact Club conducted its annual Food Appeal where non-perishable food items were collected and redistributed to needy locals by Food Relief NQ. Proceeds from Interact fundraising activities also resulted in donations being directed to the Nepal Earthquake victims, through the International Red Cross Appeal. In association with the Townsville Zonta Club, members of Interact prepared birthing kits which are delivered to birthing attendants to help the safe and healthy delivery of newborns in third-world countries.

Community messages of support were a focus during our annual Celebration of Boarding Week. Form classes ‘adopted’ a rural family and assembled ‘smoko’ packages of support, which travelled home with boarders at the end of first term. The gifts were small but heartfelt and the empathy for our boarder families was poignant. As Cassy Delahunty (11/2015) said when she thanked the School at an assembly “Living on the land is the life style we choose, we don’t want or need sympathy. The notes and letters that went out to the families with the baked relief packs, indicating that the TGS community were aware of the difficult times had a significant impact on many families.”

The Music Faculty continues to support Musicians without Borders from donations received at music soirees and Showcase evenings. The funds raised are used to support projects that use music for healing and reconciliation, in areas torn by war and conflict. The Senior Boys Choir, Lezom, continue to bring their unique performing style to the community, donating proceeds of their concerts to St James Cathedral for the less fortunate in our community. The boys also provided entertainment to residents of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home and the RSL Aged Care facility.

Jillian’s Day continues to be well supported within the School. The strong SunSmart message to students, coupled with a free dress day raises awareness of the prevention of skin cancer and provides a generous donation to the Queensland Cancer Council - this year $2835!

Operation Christmas Child organised through Samaritan’s Purse allows students in Form classes to donate gifts for children in need. The boxes of gifts are distributed to over 130 countries, all over the world.

Students in Year 10 Form classes were involved in a Community Service Day in 2015. The projects included visiting RSL Aged Care, working with Landcare Australia, volunteering at Townsville Foster and Rehoming Animals, organising and delivering gifts for Ronald McDonald House families, raising money for the Townsville Hospital Foundation and visiting the hospital to see how the funds were used.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALSpeech Night: An invitation is extended to the School Community to attend our Speech Night to be held at the Townsville Civic Theatre on Wednesday, 11 November. Speech Night is a ticketed event and those wishing to attend can secure their seat from the Civic Theatre Ticketshop by phoning 4727 9797 or online at www.townsville.qld.gov.au. Ticket bookings will be available from Wednesday, 28 October. Student prize winners and performers do not require a ticket. Seats are limited to 4 tickets per booking per day.

Parents are advised that photography is not permitted inside the Civic Theatre. Video footage will be taken of the evening, however, this is for school archival purposes only and copyright law prohibits its distribution.

All prize winners, performers and back stage crew have received a notice informing them of rehearsal times and requirements for Speech Night. Performers are required for rehearsal on Tuesday, 10 November and a full rehearsal for all prize winners and performers will be held on Wednesday, 11 November.

School Buses: This year, Sunbus issued cards to students in error. These cards (with a fare code of 22) are not valid for travel and bus drivers will be collecting these cards when students present them upon boarding a bus. If your child travels on a TGS chartered Sunbus they require a TGS ticket or Term Pass available from the North Ward Reception.

FROM THE HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL AND POSITIVE EDUCATIONYear 12 Gift: Traditionally the Year 12 cohort gives a gift to the School in appreciation and recognition of the support they have received throughout their time at TGS. This year’s gift to the School has been the purchase of six large concrete planter boxes to complement and beautify the existing landscaping and shading between the Library and School House.

Year 12 End of Term Activities: The final School Assembly for Year 12 will take place on Friday, 13 November. This very special assembly acknowledges day students who have attended Townsville Grammar for ten or more years and Boarders who have attended for five or more years. An Alternative Year 12

Programme has been organized to accommodate Year 12 students throughout their final week of School. All students have received a comprehensive timetable of events and activities and parents have received the same document via email.

MRS SUSIE [email protected]

FROM THE HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL Themed Weeks: The term started with two very important themed weeks; namely Sunsmart Awareness Week and Road Safety Awareness Week. These weeks have given students the opportunity to reflect on two very important issues through a variety of presentations, resources and discussions, both at full School assemblies and during Form class. It is hoped that these events will encourage students to be more mindful of their wellbeing in relation to these very different but important aspects of everyday life.

Year 8 Leadership Voting – 2016 Middle School Leaders: Earlier this term the Year 8 cohort voted for the Middle School leaders of 2016. From this process a recommendation will be made to the Principal regarding the leaders for next year. Those students who miss out on formal leadership positions have the opportunity of joining one of the six Middle School Committees. These committees afford students the wonderful opportunity of exercising servant leadership and giving back to the School community in many positive ways.

Year 6 into 7 Transition Programme: Year 6 students recently spent a full day at the Middle School. They completed challenging activities with a number of Year 7 teachers and got to spend a significant portion of their day with other specialist staff. The programme also included a ‘scavenger hunt’ for students to familiarise themselves with key landmarks and buildings at North Ward, in readiness for 2016.

Opti-MINDS: A team of Year 7 students recently competed at the Queensland and Australian Finals for Opti-MINDS at QUT in Brisbane. The team comprised of Alyssa Binder, Kasmira Mudd, Maya Miller, Chelsea Smith and Lachlan Carey (7/2015). They were awarded an Opti-SPIRIT award for excellence in team work. This is an outstanding achievement considering this Year 7 team were up against teams predominantly in Years 9 and 10. Our Year 7 team created a board game entitled Eco-Rush, which was targeted at the younger generation to influence them in making better choices to help save our planet and reduce our carbon foot-print.

A hugh thank you to Mrs Debbie Winkel for accompanying the team to Brisbane and all her efforts involved in Opti-MINDS this year.

Road safety saves lives!

Over 130 parents and students gathered on Muller Oval for the Middle School Movie Night. The Year 9 Citizenship Committee was instrumental in selling tickets and food on the night and all proceeds raised from this event went to support Headspace. The Year 9 Citizenship Committee also gave their time to visit the residents of the RSL Aged Care facility, during the year.

Community Service has been embraced by students on both our Annandale and North Shore campuses. Community service activities this year included a visit to Villa Vincent Nursing Home and Pirate Day Friday, raising funds for Childhood Brain Cancer Research. A toothbrush and medical supplies drive was held to benefit YWAM and fundraising also helped support the Vanuatu Cyclone Appeal. The Proceeds from the annual disco and Funky Hair day were used to support the Tsion Mariam School in Ethiopia.

Congratulations are extended to our Annandale Community Service team comprising: Ruben Nethery (Captain), Bailey Huckvale (Captain), Stanley Alcock, Darcy Arnold, Nathan Bennett, Campbell Corrigan, Mishti Dua, Thomas Gray, Ciara Kavanagh, Xanthe Lamari, Amelie Richardson Schulz, Amity Searle, Lachlan Taylor, Ellie-Rae Thompson and James Turnour (6/2015).

Congratulations are also extended to Interact Office bearers on their excellent leadership in the area of Community Service: Alexandra Baxter (President), Jasmine Lee (Vice-President), Belinda Dennis (Secretary), Cameron Crouch (Treasurer), Carl Burnett (Director), Cassy Delahunty (Director), Dache Geiger (Director), Finn Kaesehagen (Director), Max Kenchington-Goldsmith (Director), Natasha Robinson (Director) and Natasha Tahan (Director) (11/2015).

Yours sincerely

RICHARD FAIRLEYPrincipal

FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLTerm 4: This term always presents with lots of special evenings and functions, no less so than the recent Junior School Art Show and Spring Concert, where a beautiful, twilight Pre-Prep – Year 2 concert was held as a prelude to the Art Show. All students PK – Year 6 had their work exhibited. We also have Year 5 Leadership Day and Leadership Camp to Magnetic Island, Term 4 Music Recitals, Life Education Programme and Speech Night just around the corner to name a few. We do not apologise for the busyness of our campus; our view is that a busy and engaged child equals a happy child.

Melior Exi: The final Community Service aspect of the programme was the recent ‘clean up’ around Annandale. I do not think I have seen a keener group pick up so much rubbish so quickly.

This leaves one aspect of the programme to be completed, that being, the presentation of their skill to their peers and parents in November. Students have been involved in developing this skill over the past nine months.

MR NOEL [email protected]

FROM THE IB CO-ORDINATOR2014/15 Cohort: Our 5th cohort of IB students is nearing the end of their two year journey. They will soon begin their final examinations. In early November, over a period of 3 weeks, students around the world will be arriving at their exam venues to sit exactly the same examinations as our IB students. If fact this year we have an external candidate, who sat his final exams in Denmark, retaking two subjects at TGS with our cohort. There will certainly be a lot nervous energy in the air, but we are confident that our students are well prepared and that their final results will be a good reflection of their efforts over the past two years.

MR CHRIS [email protected]

FROM THE HEAD OF BOARDINGThe cycle of boarding life: The school year is drawing to a rapid close and, as always, the cycle of boarding life continues to turn. Our fourth term is a term of ceremonial events which includes a series of ‘rites of passage’. Club Sport Dinners, our Cultural Awards evening, Sports Awards Assembly, Speech Night and our Boarders Valedictory Dinner punctuate the term before our Year 9s graduate from the Middle School and we farewell the largest cohort of Year 12 boarders in many years. Soon, we welcome next year’s intake of new young boarders to our induction programme and the seniors of 2016 will have the opportunity of accepting the mantle of leading boarding next year and rising to the challenges of maintaining and building on the legacy left by the class of 2015.

Activities: Our weekend activities programme is important in getting our boarders off campus and to experience opportunities to which they may not otherwise have access. Our final term will provide a wide range of activities such as the local Greek Festival, movie cinema complexes, fishing at Aplins Weir and the Point, golf at Rowes Bay, brekkie and dinner outings to restaurants and cafes, bushwalking and swimming at Jourama Falls, Big Crystal Creek and Hervey Range Tea House, Drum Circle on the Strand, Halloween face painting and games, Barra Farm Water Park, outdoor movies at Riverway, footy at Strand Park, a Pool Party with Pizza on campus, hot chocolate at Max Brenner and ice-creams at Gelatissimo, as well as many on campus activities. Later this term, many of our boarders are looking forward to the ‘pay-as-you-go’ outing to the Troy Dunn PBR Invitational at the Townsville Entertainment Centre. Buckle up, it’s going to be a jam-packed conclusion to the year!

Boarders Valedictory Dinner: The highlight of the boarding calendar is the Boarders Valedictory Dinner. Boarders from each

A wonderful team effort!

of our eight boarding houses are preparing to entertain their boarding ‘brothers and sisters’ with song, dance and poetry.

Leave Restrictions: Parents are reminded that boarders (Years 7-11) are only granted leave on the night of the Boarders Valedictory Dinner (6 November) with their parents. The Year 12s may take leave after their final procession provided all the usual protocols have been followed. The only other night when we restrict leave is on the Friday night following our Year 12 graduation, (20 November), when boarders are only granted leave if they are going home or being collected by parents.

MR CHRIS [email protected]

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ENROLMENTS AND MARKETINGStudent Commencement Information for 2016: A reminder that each family returning to Grammar in 2016, will be receiving a package of information early in December, 2015.

To create immediate accessibility and reduce printing, the following information will be available on the School’s website (under the News > Commencement Pack 2016 heading) from the end of November, and a letter reminding you about this will be included with your package:

• Procedures for the commencement of School on Wednesday, 27 January, 2016

• School Shop opening times for January, 2016, and uniform lists / order forms

• Second Hand Bookshop opening times

• Instrumental music enrolment forms

• Boarder arrival information

We trust that this helps to make the transition to 2016 smooth for all involved.

MRS KRISTELL [email protected]

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MUSICEisteddfod Prize Winners: This year’s results from the Townsville Eisteddfod are resplendent with Grammar Ensembles and individual students. Many of the Special Awards and Bursaries in the Music Section were won by Grammar students. The Townsville Choral Society Bursary was awarded to Oliver Meade (10/2015), the Susan Grinsell Trophy was won by Krishna Patel (11/2015), the Margaret Nixon Trophy and the Sister Valerie Huston Trophy went to Bianca Bacchiella (12/2015), Dennis Perez Castillo (9/2015) received the award for the Most Promising Male Vocalist 14-18 years, Daniel Lee (6/2015) won the Trinity College Trophy for Music, Michael Carroll (9/2015) was awarded the Townsville and District Music Teachers Association Bursary, and the Vocal Encouragement Award 11 Years and Under went to Isabella Baker (4/2015). Other students who were awarded 1st prize in vocal or

instrumental event were Madeleine Simonsen (11/2015), Georgia Gorrie, Annabel Kelly, Emily Lafferty (7/2015), Xanthe Lamari, Charlotte Meade (6/2015), Luke Carroll, Philippa Jhinku, Hari Senthuran (5/2015), Freya Boggild and Caden Browne (4/2015).

Once again, our Middle School Choir, Grammar Mezzo, conducted by Ms Rachel Cairns, won the Junior Secondary Choral Championship, and each section of that event. The School is delighted in the clean sweep of 1st prize Trophies won by the Junior School Instrumental Ensembles. Allegro Strings and Andante Strings, conducted by Ms Rebecca Brown and the Junior School Concert Band, conducted by Mrs Megan Donnelly, each won their respective section. Other Grammar ensembles which won 1st prize in an Eisteddfod event were Girls Vocal Ensemble, and the Girls Vocal Octet, Bella.

Queensland Conservatorium State Honours: Congratulations to Bianca Bacchiella (12/2015) who represented the School so splendidly for four days at the Queensland Conservatorium State Honours Ensemble Programme in Brisbane.

2016 Music Ensembles and Tuition: Enrolment forms and ensemble rehearsal schedules are now available for instrumental and singing lessons in 2016. The forms are on the School website or available from the Music Centre. The music tuition fees and instrument hire fees for 2016 will remain at the current rates.

We remind parents that ensemble membership is for a whole year, so the expectation is that, when joining an ensemble, students commit for the entire year. Whereas some co-curricular activities are seasonal, for our music ensembles to function and make progress, we need to rehearse and perform throughout the year.

MR SAMUEL [email protected]

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SPORT2016 Club Sport Sign On: In 2016, Grammar will move to a new sign on process for Netball, Rowing and Rugby. The School will adopt an on-line process, to improve the administrative processing of information. Parents will need to access Trybooking, via the TGS website, after the trials take place in Term 1 in order to register players for Rugby and Netball. Rowers will begin their registration process in Term 4 of this year. Players in both Rugby and Netball will need to be registered via Trybooking in order for them to be eligible to play. A brief outline of the Club Sport trial and registration process is outlined below:

FROM THE CAREERS ADVISORYear 12 QTAC – Response to offers: Congratulations to the Year 12 students for applying to QTAC and the interstate Admission Centres on time over the recent holidays. It is now pertinent to think about the order of preferences as it is vital that they are ordered chronologically. Some institutions have early offer rounds in November and December so students may miss out on an offer simply because the order is incorrect. Preferences should then be re-ordered for the major offer rounds in January and February. Students should be regularly checking their applications on the QTAC website to determine if an early offer has been made. Students receive three free preference changes, after which it will cost $36 per change.

Also be aware that many institutions have an OP guarantee option for some courses, so that if a student receives an OP 1-5, they are guaranteed to receive an offer. Refer to the university websites for more information.

When it comes to responding to an offer, there are essentially three choices:

1. Accept unconditionally2. Accept unconditionally and defer3. Accept on condition that a higher offer will be offered

(therefore forfeiting the first offer IF made a second offer)

Students should NOT:

1. Reject an offer in any case2. Let time lapse – respond by the due date or forfeit the offer

completely.

Important Dates:

19 December OPs available on student connect6 January Last day to change preferences for January

offer round14 January First round offers made21 January Response to first round offer due by 10 am28 January Last day to change preferences for February

offer round4 February Second round offers made11 February Response to second round offer due by 10 am

Residential College Applications: It is also time to start thinking about accommodation at University, whether in Queensland or interstate. Most universities have an accommodation service which can be found on their websites. Applications due dates for these vary, with some closing in November. However they are all

open now. You need to apply directly to the Residential College. However some universities allow you to make one application and order your preferences for a number of Colleges.

I will be available via email in December or January to assist students with responding to their offers.

TGS PARENTS NETWORKMembership Welcome: The TGS Parents Network would like to encourage members of the Grammar parent community to consider becoming involved in the activities of the Network in the 2016 school year. The TGS Parents Network is a valuable service group for the School and also provides a platform for parents to gain an invaluable insight into activities and initiatives happening across all three school campuses. School Principal, Mr Richard Fairley, and key staff members regularly attend Network meetings to engage with parents and give presentations on various aspects of school life at Grammar.

Throughout the School year, members of the Network take on various roles including catering for the various sporting carnivals, facilitating the School’s Second Hand Text Book Service and allocating Network funds to support valuable projects for the School.

This year the Network contributed a significant amount to the construction of new cricket nets at the North Ward campus and will, once again, provide commemorative mugs for all graduating Year 12 students.

The Network welcomes new members to enable the group to continue with the services it currently provides to the School. We would encourage all interested parents to keep an eye on future Principal’s Newsletters for confirmation of dates for 2016. Please contact us via the email below if you are interested in becoming involved.

Second Hand Text Book Service: The TGS Parents Network will continue to operate the popular Second Hand Book Shop for Grammar families in December this year and January 2016. Opening times for this service will be publicised as soon as they are finalised. Year 12 students are reminded they will be able to drop off their books during the final week of School.

Graduation Mug Wrapping: An invitation is extended to any Year 12 parents who would like to join Network members in the School Gymnasium at 8:45am on Thursday, 19 November to assist with the wrapping of the commemorative mugs that are presented at Year 12 Graduation the following day. Many hands make light work!

Date Claimer: The TGS Parents Network AGM will be held on Wednesday, 18 November at 11:00am at a venue to be advised. A short Network meeting will also be held after the AGM.

FROM THE ARCHIVESold boys' magazine - november 1935

When the first School Magazine was published in June, 1897 it was driven largely by past students who wanted a publication that would not only keep past students up-to-date with events at the School but also act as a forum of what activities past students were involved in on leaving Grammar. Until the outbreak of World War One, there were, in most years, two magazines published but after the war this fell away and School Magazines were published at irregular intervals. For example, between 1919 and 1935 only six magazines were published. Many factors can be attributed to this but the major reasons would be the effect that the War had on past students who had left Townsville and, for various reasons, would not return and also for the fact that the School was suffering severe financial problems during that period.

In 1935 the Old Boys decided to publish their own magazine independent of the School. The driving force behind the new publication was a group of prominent past students A.H.Tait, R.E.A McKimmim, G.V.Roberts and A.S.Grose. In fact, A.S.Grose was the Head Prefect at School in 1897 and one of the first editors of the School Magazine. In the first editorial in the Old Boys’ Magazine the editor wrote: “It is hoped that, from now onwards, a Magazine will be issued regularly. Space does not permit the publication of notes on all Old Boys, or the regular activities of the Association, but, with the regular issue of a Magazine, most Old Boys will be located, and brief items regarding them should be of interest to all who were at T.G.S. This, of course, does not mean that the School Magazine will be discontinued. When it issues, our notes will be incorporated in it.” For all the interesting motives of the Association this was the first and only Magazine published in the history of the Old Boys Association.

The prime aim of the Old Boys was to raise money to aid the School. In 1935, two such activities were carried out, a Ball and a Smoke Concert. The Ball would have been one of the highlights of the Townsville social calendar. It was held at the Palais Royal and the hall was decorated with the School flag on the central archway while T.G.S.O.B. was lettered in gold across a black background, relieved by yellow wisteria and floodlit. The centre row of lights was hung with wisteria and bignonia venusta, an ornamental plant of orange flowers, were on the alcoves on either side. Dances during the night included the Hic Hok Hike, the Bend Over, the Muscle Grinder and with a sporting theme, the “Footbrawl” Fox Trot and the “Leg Glance” Fox Trot. The highlight could surely have been the Rowland Roll. Past students making fun of their Headmaster! The night made a profit of £42.

The Smoke Concert was held at the Roof Garden Café and entry was 2 shillings. Smoke Concerts were traditionally a male only affair and had their origins at the Oxford and Cambridge Universities. It was a gathering of gentlemen who would wear their smoking jackets and listen to live performances from a variety of artists. It was also an opportunity for the men to discuss the political and economic issues of the day. At the Old Boys’ Smoke Concert the participants were encouraged to wear a blazer with their newly designed Old Boys’ badge which cost 7 shillings. It is also interesting to note that five senior boys from the School were invited to the Smoke Concert. The annual Old Boys versus School cricket match was held the following day; a fixture which the Old Boys won.

When Mr Hodges took up his role as Headmaster in 1889 the first sport he introduced was cricket. The sport was taken up with great enthusiasm by the students and in the 1890s and the first decade of the twentieth century Grammar School and Grammar Old Boys were leading teams in the city. The School team was bolstered by staff whose cricketing ability was of the highest standard. As with many aspects of the School, sport fell by the wayside during the war years and in the 1920s. Cricket again flourished in the 1930s and the 1935 Old Boys’ Magazine is particularly proud of the two Old Boy teams playing in the local competition. The Saturday team, led by Dom Martinez, were competition leaders as was the senior team that played on a Sunday. It is not surprising that the senior team was successful as they had two Queensland State players in Alan Tait and Glen Baker in the team. Alan Tait was to be Chairman of the School Trustees during World War Two and Glen Baker was killed in New Guinea during that conflict.

The prime aim of the Old Boys was to support the School financially whenever possible. This was particularly evident when financial help after Cyclone Leonta (1903) helped re-build what is now School House. The attached set of accounts from 1934-35 is a reflection as to where the funds were going and makes for interesting reading. For many years the school curriculum followed the England model of grammar school with languages, geography, history, and English the main subjects. By 1935 there was a move to commercial training for girls hence the two typewriters donated and science with the donation of the spectroscope. The Old Boys also financed an annual scholarship and, in 1934, this was provided to Chester Parker, a student who was to go on to become the second Rhodes Scholar from the School. He was tragically killed in World War Two while serving with the British Navy in the Mediterranean.
