Dear Leadership Academy member,

Oh behalf of the Office for Student Involvement, we would like to officially

welcome you as a registered member of the Student Leadership Academy! We are

thrilled that you have decided to begin your journey towards developing

leadership skills. This program is designed with the Social Change Model of

leadership as its foundation. The Social Change Model focuses on characteristics of

leadership in three different contextual areas: personal leadership, organizational

leadership, and community leadership. Workshops and events will be focused on

these three areas of leadership. The ultimate goal of the Social Change Model is to

create positive change. Are you ready to “be the change you want to see in the

world”? The Leadership Academy will help you be that change!

This guidebook will give you all of the information you need to complete the

program. If you have any additional questions about the Student Leadership

Academy, please do not hesitate to come by the Office for Student Involvement

(OSI). We are located in the University Center, Room 205. Our phone number is

(956) 665-2660. You can also reach us through e-mail at [email protected].

Sincerely,

The Office for Student Involvement

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I have to attend every workshop or event?

No. The workshops are scheduled at different times to meet different students’

schedules. You can attend the events in any order, so long as you attain the 150 points.

2. What if I am graduating this semester? Can I finish the program,?

You cannot finish the program in one semester. The program can be completed in

1 academic year (2 long semesters). If you graduate before you finish and you attend

graduate school at UTPA you can continue where you left off! Your points roll over from

one semester to the next.

3. Do I have to take two years to finish?

Absolutely not! You can finish in 1 academic year. You have up until 2 years to

finish the program if you need the full time.

4. How do I know my points are being tracked correctly?

At each Leadership Academy event there will always be a sign in sheet or id

card swipes. Make sure you sign in to get credit for attendance. Our office keeps

track of attendance at all events.

5. What happens when I finish the program?

When you finish all of the program requirements you will receive a Certificate of

Leadership. You will also be honored at the Tribute to Success Event that is held every

Spring semester.

6. I can’t finish the program because something came up. What do I do?

We understand situations arise that are sometimes out of our control. If you cannot

finish the program, there is no penalty. If you cannot finish in the two years allotted,

then you would have to start over from scratch..

7. I heard there was an Advanced Leadership Academy. What is that and can I

join that, too?

The Advanced Leadership Academy is designed for Leadership Academy graduates

to be able to practice the leadership skills they learned through conducting workshops,

planning conferences, and coordinating service opportunities. This program will not start

until Fall 2013. Enrollment will open late Spring semester.
