I hope you take some time to thank those who made it possible for you to begin your journey at VinUniversity. This Handbook is intended as a practical guide for you as you start your life at VinUniversity. This Handbook covers important topics such as academic requirements, first-year experience, and residential life, student activities, and many more. This Handbook will help you to be aware of and understand essential policies, values, and standards that you should respect as a valued community member. Here you find the community's expectations of you in honesty, personal conduct, and commitment to a safe living and learning environment. This Handbook is available online and will be updated regularly with input from the VinUniversity community. I urge you to take a few minutes to read through this document and feel free to research and dig deeper into those areas of the university that spark your interest. I trust that this year will be a defining time for you in your life. It will be full of opportunities, challenges, and fun. While it will be defined by academic rigor and high expectations, it is important that you allow yourself to explore the campus, try something new, open your mind to new ideas, participate in activities, and reach out and connect with new people with different views and backgrounds. The choices you make along the way will be crucial to your development, not just as a competent and skilled college graduate, but also as an informed, empathetic, involved, and responsible citizen of the world. More than any other time in our lifetimes, our experience over the past few months has shown us how fragile is our hold over the future. In fact, one thing we are certain about the future is its uncertainty. Sometimes life throws us a curveball, our plans don't work out, and we might feel overwhelmed with our emotions or perceived expectations. VinUniversity staff and faculty are here to help you in those times. Don't hesitate to reach out to advisers and people you can trust to talk about your academic and non-academic matters. You are at VinUniveristy because of your talent, your potential, and drive to make a positive difference in the world. Under the nurturing care of VinUniversity, you will grow and develop your talents to become the future leader that Vietnam and the world are looking for. I look forward to being part of your journey and witnessing you grow and flourish through the years at VinUni. I wish you all a happy, healthy, and rewarding year! Very truly yours, Rohit Verma, Founding Provost

You will need to take the initiative and responsibility to get updated on the timeline via the Student Information System (SIS) and VinUni’s website. 2. Academic Resources 2.1. Academic Advising Academic advising is a student-centered process that allows you to reach your full academic potential and develop professional competency under the guidance of an advisor. It is a shared responsibility between you and your advisor to create a plan for your academic journey. However, you are ultimately responsible to define your academic and career goals and execute your plan to successfully achieve them. Your Academic Advisor will support you throughout your university life and is assigned based on your major. During your first year at VinUniversity, your advisor will support your transition from high school to university life with your decisions to choose your classes and student organizations to join and navigate the policies and guidelines of VinUniversity. Your Academic Advisor will continue to help you build on the academic, co-curricular, and career goals throughout your university life. All VinUniversity students are required to meet with their academic advisor at least once per semester in their first academic year. Your first appointment should take place before the end of the add/drop period. . We will advise you on how to make an appointment with your advisor. If the advisor permits it, you may also contact your advisor directly through his/her work email. What are your responsibilities:

• Initiate contact: You are expected to initiate your contact with your Academic Advisor for scheduling, course changes, and other matters in a timely fashion. Because of their commitments to teaching, research, and other academic obligations, your academic advisor may not always be available on short notice. You are expected to plan and initiate your contact well in advance of specific deadlines. You should be well prepared for each meeting;

• Complete your Individual Develop Plan (IDP): With support from your Advisor, you should complete a goals and objectives document for each year.

• Keep your advisor informed: Your Advisor can provide better advice if she/he is kept informed of your academic progress, challenges, and career goals;

• Communicate effectively: Good advising can occur only if both you and your Academic Advisor make active efforts to develop it. Fully recognizing that your Advisor has his/her styles and personalities; you should discuss with your Advisor to find the best way to work with each other.

What to expect from your academic advisor:

• Advice: You should use your academic advisor as a resource for planning your academic program, identifying academic and career goals, and obtaining general advice on graduate degrees and careers;

• Assistance and Referrals: Academic advisor may provide you with general information about and referrals to special programs such as internships, study abroad, and concurrent degrees. S/he may also help you obtain tutoring services or receive transfer/advanced placement credit, as appropriate.

mental and physical requirements as well as schedules, students develop their self-discipline, grit & durability. Various extracurricular activities are integrated into the curriculum to foster inclusivity, maturity & responsibility towards student families and their societies. Healthy Lifestyle “Healthy Lifestyle” is a mandatory and non-credit bearing GenED course that provides students with the essential knowledge, skills, and practicum lessons (exercise/sports classes) to make better choices during their daily routines to build a healthy lifestyle. Students will have a greater understanding of fitness, exercises, nutrition & diets to achieve their physical goals & desired health results. As a healthy lifestyle includes external/internal physical wellbeing, mental, social & spiritual health, students receive mentorship that guides and shapes their perspectives about the importance of having a well-balanced life. Finally, the course emphasizes the practical application of learned concepts to integrate the subject matter into student daily routines. English Requirements English is the primary language for courses and communication at VinUniversity. To ensure that you can fully participate in VinUniversity courses and co-curricular activities, which are all conducted in English, the University requires that you have a minimum English competency level, equivalent to IELTS 6.5 (and that each component skill scores a minimum of 6.0). If you have not reached the required English competency at the time of enrollment, you are required to take English Pathway courses and pass the Pathway Advanced exam. Without the required English competency, you can enroll only in a limited number of courses at VinUniversity in the first year. Once you meet the required English competency level, VinUniversity offers two required courses, Academic English 1 and 2, to help you improve your English proficiency further and develop fundamental academic skills (e.g., writing, presentation, debate, research, cite information) at a university level. Humanity, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) The HASS requirement reflects VinUniversity’s rigorous and creative approach to meet MOET’s requirement for courses on ideological education. Courses integrate area studies and adopt an interdisciplinary approach. Through these courses, you will develop a global and local lens by learning to be critical of Vietnam’s past and present. You will understand the agency of individuals in society for social changes. Through grounding discussions based on familiar examples in Vietnam and pertinent examples from the region and the world, the courses will equip you with critical thinking abilities. The courses are also designed based on the principle of content-based language, which seeks to improve your English communication skills with an emphasis on listening, speaking, and reading abilities, thus contributing to your Competence both in English communication skills and in humanities and social scientific knowledge. The one-credit Arts elective is designed to serve as a reminder for you of the continued relevance of arts and humanities in life, regardless of your chosen professional fields.

Leadership Spirit Leadership spirit is the ability to influence and motivate people to maximize efforts towards achieving a common goal. Through these leadership components, you will develop an awareness of your personality, strengths, and gaps, thereby gaining a foundational understanding of teamwork and leadership. Entrepreneurial Mindset Entrepreneurial Mindset is the way of thinking that enables people to overcome challenges, be decisive, accept responsibility while meaning to do something impactful for the society. Entrepreneurship requirement includes one two-credit course (Agile Innovation) and one co-curricular activity (Entrepreneurship Initiatives). This requirement helps you to develop the entrepreneurial mindset to discover and evaluate opportunities. You will also have the opportunity to work with multidisciplinary partners to develop new solutions that may become the foundation of a new business venture. Global Experience Global Experience consists of a set of co-curricular activities that you can undertake from the second year onwards. The activities are designed to foster your global awareness, develop intercultural competence, enhance your professional knowledge in the global context, and to nurture your sense of global citizenship with the commitment to civic responsibility. Community Service Learning Community Service Learning is a set of co-curricular activities that you can undertake from the third year onwards. The activities promote your application of professional knowledge, cultivate your sense of civic responsibility, empathy, and urge you to become ethical leaders. College-sponsored courses At VinUniversity, your holistic, personal, and professional growth is our key priority. It is therefore crucial that you are exposed to knowledge outside of your chosen majors. Each College at VinUniversity offers a course for non-major students to help foster an introductory appreciation to law, computing, and health science. Depending on your major, some courses are required while others are elective. You should consult with your academic advisors to ensure that you are meeting the graduation requirement in this regard. 4. Academic Opportunities VinUniversity is a vibrant intellectual community of students and faculty. You can find a broad spectrum of academic opportunities that go beyond your specialization. Double degrees, double majors, and interdisciplinary learning allow you to pursue your two areas of interest in a shorter time. While exchange programs provide an international adventure, research and internship help you bridge theoretical knowledge and practical application. Start sharing your interest with your academic advisor to see how it may fit into your long-term plan!

4.1. Double Degree and Double Major The Double Degree planned to be offered to enhance interdisciplinary study at VinUniversity and provide a unique opportunity for exceptional students whose interests cross boundaries. You can earn a double major (related or unrelated to your first) when the two majors lead toward the same degree within the same college. This leads to a single diploma, with both majors noted on the transcript. Depending on your unique goals and interests, you can pursue two unrelated majors and enroll in two different degrees in the same College or different Colleges. This leads to the award of two different degrees resulting in two diplomas at the time of graduation. 4.2. Interdisciplinary Learning At VinUniversity, we promote interdisciplinary learning to foster creative and innovative thinking and to prepare students to work effectively in cross-functional teams. Interdisciplinary learning is more than just a class where students of different backgrounds are learning together. Students will bring their unique background/skills to work together on multidisciplinary activities or projects. How is Interdisciplinary Learning Delivered at VinUniversity:

• Multidisciplinary Courses/Projects: Courses/projects within courses where students from multiple degree programs work together. It requires either a joint class (i.e computer science, engineering, and business students) or cross-course projects or community engagement projects.

• Interdisciplinary Minors: A set of minor courses is designed for students of different degree programs to work together. Examples include Robotics, Technopreneur, or Smart Cities.

• Industry projects: Experiences designed for small groups of students to work together with one outside company. Individual students could also be immersed in an interdisciplinary group within the company.

4.3. Student Research At VinUniversity, undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in academic research with faculty. Undergraduate research is challenging but rewarding and recognized as highly effective in developing logical, critical, and creative thinking abilities. Examples of undergraduate research projects include the independent study that allows students to explore topics of their interest; assisted research by working with a faculty member or research group on an existing project to gain training in how to conduct research. Students should talk to faculty members, academic advisors to identify and explore research opportunities available across campus and also beyond campus. 4.5. Internships For some of you, an internship may be your first hands-on experience of working in the real world: Being an intern and doing the practicum at an institution will allow you to an opportunity to apply what you have learned and acquired at VinUniversity in the real-life context.

Unlike an ordinary stand-alone university, VinUniversity is part of the Vingroup Eco-system whose operation and activities range from industrials, technology, education, health-care services to real estate and hospitality. One of the utmost advantages of VinUniversity students is to have opportunities to intern at the leading Vingroup companies in your area of study. If you are a Medical Doctor or a nursing student, chances are that you will be practicing at hospitals or clinics of the Vinmec Healthcare System which is affiliated with VinUniversity. If you are a student in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, companies like Vinfast and Vinsmart are your ideal internship hosts, or else you can serve as research assistants or interns at research institutes such as VinBrain or VinAI. Students in the College of Business and Management will be able to apply what they have learned on campus at a leading real-estate company like Vinhomes or the top hospitality chain in Vietnam like Vinpearl. We are here to make sure that we connect you with the best possible match for an internship program so that your experience off-campus as an intern will well prepare you for your future work. 5. Academic Procedures 5.1 Study Load Your study load is determined by the number of credits you are studying. A normal full-time is around 30 credits spread over an academic year. You may be able to increase or decrease your study load to help meet your academic goals. You should consult your College for the exact number of credits for the program you are in. To be classified as a full-time student, you must be enrolled in at a minimum, 80% of a normal full-time load in a teaching period. The following number of credits per semester is required for undergraduate students to complete a degree in four years or eight semesters. 1

Study Load Variation

Credits per regular Semester Remarks

Normal load At least 14 credits (applicable for first-semester students, and students for whom the previous semester with good academic standing or higher).

This is to complete the degree requirements within a normal specified period of candidature.

Automatic Overload 18-22 credits, subject to approval by the Academic Advisor concerned

This enables you to pursue your studies as a pace commensurate with your needs and/or capabilities. For those wishing ot pursure a double major, this may be the only way to get enough credits.

Beyond automatic overload

More than 22 credits, subject to approval by the College Dean concerned

On an exception basis, only if your faculty and advisor are confident that you are mentally,

1 For tuition policies related to the study load, refer to the VinUniversity financial regulations https://vinuni.edu.vn/quy-dinh-tai-chinh-va-bieu-phi/

intellectually and physically able to thrive under this kind of workload.

Overloading is determined by the total number of credits, including physical education, support, and

repeated courses. Some degrees (such as double degrees) have different annual loads and this can impact

your student status. You should consider the impact of changing your enrolment when applying for this

option.

5.2. Course Registration All courses offered for the academic year are listed in the course catalog at the Student Information System. You are encouraged to spend time searching through the catalog to view informational materials and the course syllabi that the professor may upload for the course. The course listings include a description of the course to be studied, and what prerequisites if any, list the days and hours during the course meets, the classroom, the date for a final exam, etc. Each Semester, the Office of Registrar will notify you via email to check for your registration appointment. Your registration appointment is the date and time you can register online for your next semester courses. Before registration, you will need to meet your academic advisor to plan your course schedule. After your advising session, backpack your class choices, and prepare alternate schedules if a class is full on your registration date. It is important not to let the course selection overwhelm you. Take advantage of the many resources available to you and do not be afraid to ask questions. Your Academic Advisor, Program Director, Dean, and Faculty are all very willing to help. 5.3. Transfer of Credits

Transfer of credits may be granted in recognition of your studies completed elsewhere other than

VinUniversity at an appropriate level as recognized by the University, for example, international exchange

VinUniversity strongly expects each student to share information for the safety and well-being of your

fellow students and to seek assistance from the University officials (Advisors, Counsellor, Office of Student

Services) and/or medical emergency services, without fear of the University disciplinary action for or the

consumption of alcohol and/or use of controlled substances.

16.2 Community Relations VinUniversity aims to gain a broad understanding of different cultures and religions among students, faculties, and staff. Each member of our community should be willing to address and discuss ethical issues and work together to determine a process to solve any conflicts. Students are expected to consider respect and consideration for others and their religion as a community standard. This is a core value to harmonize the community and support the growth of each member in a diverse community. Insensitivity to those issues can result in a great impact on the community such as anxiety, stress, poor physical health, poor academic performance, loss of self-esteem, etc. All members are responsible for their acts, therefore, VinUniversity will condemn any form of religious and racial harassment. VinUniversity supports an inclusive learning environment that acknowledges, seeks to understand, and respects the differences among individuals, and welcomes diversity as a source of our individual and collective strength. Students and instructors in this class are expected to respect differences and demonstrate diligence in understanding how other peoples' perspectives and behaviors may be different from their own. Adapted from the inclusivity statement at Cornell University, found here https://teaching.cornell.edu/resource/getting-started-constructing-syllabus
